One day years ago, at the gym I used to go to, I saw a woman wearing something straight out of the 80s. A sleeveless lycra leotard in vertical black and white stripes over lycra cycle shorts in fluorescent green. Then she turned around to reveal that the leotard was, well one of these basically: This

leedy · 13/10/2014 12:26

I once saw a woman wearing an 80s style ra ra skirt in the steam room.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/10/2014 12:38

When I was out running one day a bloke on a bike passed me wearing what can only be described as a Big Daddy style unitard Grin I chuckled for ages, it absolutely made my run. He was middle aged and portly too....

Mostly I just ponder the bare chests on blokes and bra tops on women in summer, it's never that hot really.....

ShatnersBassoon · 13/10/2014 12:42

My mum wears plimsolls to the gym. Proper, primary school black plimsolls.

She thinks trainers are a gimmick Grin

There was an elderly lady at my gym who always wore just everyday clothes...
Sometimes jeans, fluffy jumper and boots, sometimes slim fit chino style trousers with blouse and blazer, sometimes a knee length dress with tights and short HEELS!

None of the staff had the heart to tell her she needed gym wear.

She just have been well into her eighties and spent the whole time walking slowly on the treadmill, bless her

I used to wear one if those thong leotards with cycling shorts and matching trainers to the gym when I was about 18. I thought I looked hot!! I am sure if I could look back in time I actually had a banging body but I spent most of my time thinking I was fat Sad

BettyMoody · 13/10/2014 12:54

i had a cotton unitard thing in the mid 90s. Nike one. Was one colour shorts then a contrasting colour leotard type thing. I dont think it looked too bad as it wasnt thongy or shiny
I suppose a bit like this media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/d8/89/77/d88977c690a3060067766c52f029dc44.jpg

once, at a work gym - so everyone works at the same company - lady comes in saying she has forgotton her joggers, and starts riding a bike in just her t shirt and pants.

many years ago and still need brain bleach

Skinheadmermaid · 13/10/2014 13:37

Now I feel left out I haven't seen any of these things at my gym, but it is a martial arts gym.
The worse was my conditioning instructor on Friday wearing skin tight leggings and a tiny vest but he's a professional long jumper with muscles like a greek god so he could just about pull it off.

BettyMoody · 13/10/2014 13:38

my spin guy wears shorts with a built in cod piece

It's the young girls in Converse, with their long hair loose and flowing that gets me. They must be so uncomfortable!

LittlePrawn · 13/10/2014 14:53

I sometimes wear my boyfriend's old, thick cotton jogging bottoms to the gym.

I wonder if I look odd in them as I only ever see women wearing black lycra legging things (usually just below the knee or mid calf length) at the gym.

kaykayblue · 13/10/2014 15:51

I know people do get so very pissy about "judgemental" comments on other people's gym wear, but it STILL pisses me off. Especially since at our gym there is a decathlon (so super fucking cheap) store AT THE ENTRANCE of the gym.

Things which annoy me in no particular order:

  • Girls on the treadmill wearing converse trainers. Converse are not sports shoes. What's wrong with them??

  • Girls wearing thick tights with the feet cut off instead of actual trousers. What the fuck? It's like they heard of "running tights" and made some bizarre assumptions as to what they were.

  • Men on the treadmill wearing loafers. LOAFERS.

  • women with super long hair, loose, working out. I just find it so bizarre. Sure, maybe once or twice they might have just forgotten a hair band, but it was often the same women, with their hair constantly down.

  • People who were working out in massive jumpers. Firstly, it just seems a bit strange, and secondly....some kind of sympathy heat stroke!

Pufflemum · 13/10/2014 15:54

There is a woman in my gym who works out in a bin bag. Head to toe in a black plastic bag, over a track suit. Seriously. I've googled it and apparently you sweat more so loose more. She rustles on the treadmill, it's very off putting.

Pufflemum · 13/10/2014 15:57

I've just googled it again. It seems it's called a sauna sweat suit. Yuk. Do you think they are washable?

Felyne · 13/10/2014 16:04

Oh God Pufflemum that must smell ... lovely.

standingonlego · 13/10/2014 16:11

I saw a man in deck shoes today at mine Shock

Selks · 13/10/2014 16:11

People wearing seemingly inappropriately baggy clothes such as jumpers might have body image issues.
I wear a loose t shirt and full length yoga pants (plus trainers) as I am overweight and don't want to wear skin tight gym wear (but do draw the line at jumpers! Smile)

LittlePrawn · 13/10/2014 16:24

Pufflemum, how do you manage to keep a straight face when she's wearing a bin bag at the gym?

There is no way I would wear that in public. Even if it DID make me lose weight faster.

I'm not sure sweating more means you lose weight anyway. I suppose you would lose more water which will weigh something, but won't you just end up dehydrated?

BabyGoose · 13/10/2014 16:27

A leather jacket with sleeves pushed up mid arm. Needless to say he only looked at himself in the mirror and didn't exercise.

crossparsley · 13/10/2014 16:42

Really lovely, great value (20 euro for a week pass) gym in Seville. I'm in the free weights area and there is a man, maybe early 60s, in a sheeny shiny wet-look silver Big Daddy unitard thing. He was also orange, with custard-coloured hair. He was super fit though, in the old sense of the word. Like a ripped Jerry Lee Lewis. Two days later: apricot-custard man in sheeny shiny black unitard. Last day of holiday: he wasn't there. I was very disappointed. He was soooooo shiny.
