Who makes shoes boots in size 8 which are a real size 8, not a EU 41?

I live in a crap town with crap shops and the next nearest cities are quite far away. It's not easy to find shoes and boots locally if I want some choice. I buy most footwear online but get caught out by the inconsistency in sizing. I'm a proper British size 8 but never know if what I am ordering is really an EU41. If European sizes are given and I order an EU42, I've sometimes received a shoe that equates to a British size 9. It's infuriating. I recently ordered some size 8 loafers from Jones, only to receive a EU41. And that was the biggest size they did.

Is there anyone that reliably sells a size 8 which is truly a size 8? Or an Eu42 which isn't a size 9?

41 is a 7. If that is the biggest size they do they are idiots. Why this lack of bigger shoe sizes? I can't buy anything much (that isn't for old ladies or transvestites), I'm a size 9.

Sorry OP, I can't help much. But can you tell me which brands of shoe you have had that at EU42 equates to a size 9?

AgathaF · 09/10/2014 11:26

Infuriates me too. Clarks, Next, M&S, Dorothy Perkins, lots at Zalando and Sarenza are 'proper' sizes.

Minion · 09/10/2014 11:35

Ive size 9s too and rely on new look and next if Im feeling a bit flush.
New looks 42 is a true 9 for me.

DidoTheDodo · 09/10/2014 12:56

I am in agreement with you bryte. Shoes sizes are a real lottery. I do find Clarks pretty good - indeed, dependent upon the style I have been known to wear a 7.5.

And don't get me started on widths...long feet are not necessarily wide feet, thank you.

Not if you're a size 8 it isn't.....

Rosa · 09/10/2014 13:30

Geox an 8 is a 42 , Stonefly an 8 is a 41 . Clarks a 42 is a 9 ,
and Jones 9 is a very small 8 . I find marks and Spencer wide fit 8 fit me , Next I give up as 8 is too small but a 9 is too big. As I am abroad it is costly sending them back. Agree New Look 8 fits !!!!!

bryte · 09/10/2014 14:21

Thanks all.

DidoTheDodo - I'm with you on the width too. I rarely manage to wear slip on shoes because she manufacturers seem to think longer feet = wide heels(?) Do people really have that much variation in heel width as shoe manufacturers would have us believe? My shoe size is larger because my toes are long. The rest of my foot is regularly sized in every way.

I have long toes too, just generally long skinny feet, so I completely agree about the width thing.

DidoTheDodo · 09/10/2014 16:02

Another long toes person here. I am delighted it is raining today as I have got my trusty boots out for the first time this autumn. Oh the relief!

JuneFromBethesda · 09/10/2014 16:14

I find Clarks and M&S fairly reliable for 8s that are 42s. Drives me insane too though - I was an 8 for years then suddenly lots of shoe manufacturers decided that an 8 was a 41 and sized me out of the market.

LightastheBreeze · 09/10/2014 16:32

41 is a 7, if shops ask my shoe size I say 41 not 7, so I don't get 40.

Marks and Spencer 8 is a proper 8 I think, as their 7 fit me well and I am a big 7.

DaPrincessBride · 09/10/2014 16:38

New Look are fab for my size 8s, and they have recently launched a premium range - saw it in store, they felt like excellent quality.

Premium

polyhymnia · 09/10/2014 16:59

No, 41 is a 7 1/2 for sure, not a 7.

I always wear a 41 (except when I buy Boden, where I go for 42).

But I definitely can't get into a 7 on the few occasions I buy from makers that use UK sizes. Have been told by Clark's that 41 is a 7 but they are just wrong!

polyhymnia · 09/10/2014 17:01

PS yes, and if I wanted an 8 would ask for 42.

LightastheBreeze · 09/10/2014 17:20

polyhymnia I stand corrected, I looked on the M & S size guide and 6.5 is 40, 7 is 40.5 and 7.5 is 41

I alway have a 41 in Boden and 7, very occasionally 7.5, in M & S

8 is definitely 42

MrsDavidBowie · 09/10/2014 17:24

Pisses me off. I am a 43 in Italian shoes.
But Next/clarks size 9 are too small

AtiaoftheJulii · 09/10/2014 17:29

Jones are weird, I decided that the other day. But in the other direction, I bought some Camper shoes off eBay a couple of weeks ago which say 41, and they're massive, a proper 8 (at least).

Apart from those two, I've not noticed any serious anomalies.

polyhymnia · 09/10/2014 17:32

I just wish they'd all stick to European sizes and we'd know where we were.

Worzel77 · 09/10/2014 17:40

French Sole do lovely ballet flats up to size EUR 44 although I'd say they fit about half a size smaller. Not too wide either and really comfortable, worth the extra cost.

MrsGromit · 09/10/2014 18:21

I am a 42 and I find that M&S, Clark's and Boden's 8s all fit me well. Tis a pain here in France where I am looked at in disgust when I go into most shoe shops.

FaFoutis · 09/10/2014 19:28

Ballet flats would flop off my feet. They don't seem to be engineered for longer feet. Plus I looked on the French Sole website and they have a special section for bigger sizes - like bigger feet are shameful and unnatural for fucks sake.

I keep waiting for shoe manufacturers to wake up to the fact that feet do not stop at size 8 but nothing seems to change.

WildBillfemale · 09/10/2014 20:13

NEXT 42=8
43=9
Katie longshoes
Tall girls
Long Tall Sally
Evans do big shoes

Unfortunately if you want really nice shoes like Carvela or Dune or most brands in the dept stores they still think 41 is an 8......

I bought some French Sole ballet flats supposedly a uk 9 and they were tiny - more like a 7! straight back they went.

peasandlove · 10/10/2014 10:46

ooh liking those new look premium shoes, unfortunately the heels are too high on most for me - I'm already 6ft

SoftSheen · 10/10/2014 10:55

Size EU 41 is actually equivalent to a British size 7.5, but because most shops don't sell adult half sizes they call it either 7 or 8.

I recently discovered that Timberland do sell boots in half sizes (so an EU 41 is a British 7.5 and and EU 42 should be a true size 8). You might like to try there.
