What is that handbag that I see almost every shopper in John Lewis carrying?

It's bugging me. It's a classic bag. My mother in law has one but it seems to be fashionable these days. It's really plain, almost bucket style, most often navy with a zip and a leather flap over the top that people always seems to leave undone. I think Kate Middleton has one. They look so simple that they shouldn't be expensive, but I'm sure they are.

Le pliage?

pebblestack · 06/10/2014 14:26

yes, sounds like the Longchamp pliage. And you're right, they're not cheap for a synthetic bag.

BikeRunSki · 06/10/2014 14:26

Mulberry Anthony?

I really don't know about bags, but I want an Anthony.

whitechocolatestars · 06/10/2014 14:27

Longchamp?

polyhymnia · 06/10/2014 14:27

Yup must be Longchamp Le Pliage - subject if a. Wry recent thread on here.

BikeRunSki · 06/10/2014 14:27

Ah, didn't realise it was a synthetic bag you'd seen.

polyhymnia · 06/10/2014 14:28

Very, not 'a.Wry'!

WowOoo · 06/10/2014 14:28

Yes, a Lonchamp pliage.

I was given one when my sister had a handbag clear out. She has it in many colours. I had no idea how pricey they were until a friend told me.

KoalaDownUnder · 06/10/2014 16:05

Yep, Le Pliage. I don't understand why people fork out for them, really. Something about the shape of the handles and that fussy little leather tab really irritates me! (Unreasonable, I know.)

RonaldMcDonald · 06/10/2014 16:56

The pillage is the Best of all emperor's new clothes purchases

ChocPretzels · 06/10/2014 17:00

I like the Longchamp bags (just got the version with black handles). Good size and they remind me of my ancient Hervé Chapélier??? ones that were around donkeys years ago... (those came in many colours too but with wide canvas straps instead of leather).

Pompbear · 06/10/2014 19:02

I always wondered that too. just had a nosey, £68?! haha. I won't be able to look at them in the same light again. £68 English pounds. hahahahahaha! seriously, I nearly spat my tea out. Emperor's new clothes indeed.

shggg245 · 06/10/2014 19:06

.

Briony32 · 06/10/2014 21:08

Blinking heck. Did not realise it was that expensive! For a nylon bag?! I was wondering if there was a cheaper John Lewis own brand version or something. The one I'm thinking of looks very much like a Longchamp pliage one, but I think it might be a bit simpler/plainer.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again.

I have had my Le Pliage since 2007 when dh went on a rugby tour. He bought me one as 'sorry for being away' gift. I still have it, and it's my to go to bag. No problems with it at all.

It gets abused quite a bit by me, and I think it's pretty good quality for lasting so bloody long.

everythingsgoingsouth · 06/10/2014 21:16

could be the marks and spencer copy version?

LaurieFairyCake · 06/10/2014 21:17

I've had mine since 1997 and if it wasn't for the fact it's an unfortunate pink I'd be using it still

Still do as my beach bag - cost me £29 back then

polyhymnia · 06/10/2014 21:21

The M and S copy versions are not so good and you can't get one that sits so nicely on your shoulder.

I have 3 Pliages - worth every penny for the use I've had out of them.

LesleyKnopeFan · 06/10/2014 21:24

I love my pliage. I too have a 1998 Herve chapelier, still as good as new!

I'll be getting another one with leather handles/straps.

Emo76 · 06/10/2014 21:50

In defence of les Pilages! I have had one for years and much use inc as a baby bag. It has lasted extremely well. Tough as anything. For me worth every penny.

AmethystMoon · 06/10/2014 22:20

Does anyone know if they sell le pliage at Gatwick airport? I know they do at heathrow but unsure of Gatwick?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/10/2014 23:33

Do they sit nicely on your shoulder or do they dig in?

mammmamia · 06/10/2014 23:42

They are great. I have a black leather one that is pricier but looks nice and very easy to wear.

BotoxednSpanxed · 06/10/2014 23:48

google vanessa bruno. you might get something similar but a lot cheaper.

BotoxednSpanxed · 06/10/2014 23:51

i take that back. just looked on line and shocked at the price of VB bags.
