my favourite outfit - "never again" edition

Another thread reminded me of my absolute favourite outfit when I was about 13 (circa 1985): slouchy grey boots, grey cord "baggies", grey anklewarmers, red knit batwing top, all topped off with grey plastic bead jewellery and a grey belt worn over the jumper. I thought I looked THE BUSINESS. I loved it to the extent that I remember telling my friend before going to a Youth Club disco that I would never be embarrassed by it - "70s clothes, flares and that, they're all ridiculous - but batwings and baggies just look great!"

Have you any favourite outfits of yore that you cringe at? Or think of fondly but would never wear again?

(Honourable mention for me also goes to various 90s clubbing outfits, including a silver lame crop top and a green fake fur jacket that looked like I'd skinned a Muppet for its pelt)

Turquoise corduroy hot pants with Bavarian style bib under a purple midi-coat with a fur trim (fake obvs) at the hem. Topped with a Feather cut.
1970 at its finest Smile

Excellent stuff!

Did crotch lacing ever look good? Also I'm a bit worried it may be back, there was a thing in US Glamour recently with some stylist woman going through her wardrobe "key pieces" - one of them was a pair of black trousers with crotch lacing. They just looked GODAWFUL, even styled to the nines.

In 1985 (I was 14) I was wearing vintage Levi's 501s, black skinny polo neck, black bomber jacket, black DM ankle boots or brown DM tasselled loafers, and bright red lipstick. I thought I was da biz.

I wore that black bomber with everything - including men's boxer shorts worn over black tights with DM boots (!?) or black cycling shorts...

Twinklestein · 23/09/2014 12:57

Never worn DMs since.

chocolaterainbow · 23/09/2014 12:59

floisme your outfit sounds awesome, a bit Woodstock :)

When I was about 16/17 I had some bright pink (think barbie) wide leg and flared courdaroy trousers (from miss sixty!). I wore them with a light brown (fake) afgan coat. Blush this was the late 90s maybe '01

leedy · 23/09/2014 13:00

Oh God, now reminded of my next favourite outfit from about 1987, which also involved bright red lipstick and DMs, really enormous backcombed hair, and an old man's suit accessorized with an old toothbrush in the pocket to re-pouffe the backcombing. Went through about a can of Wella hairspray a week.

twinklestein ....like superman? Grin

mrsminiverscharlady · 23/09/2014 13:06

I used to wear these really baggy trousers in a kind of crazy multi-coloured printed fabric. Teamed with doc martens and a baggy t-shirt I thought I looked brilliant. I also dyed my hair green and couldn't understand why everyone took the piss.

It is fascinating how things go in and out of fashion. Why do we think something is the height of cool one year and incredibly embarrassing a few years later? I was reading something earlier and just the typeface made me realise it was published in the late 90s/early 00s. How can a typeface look specific to a particular era?

vezzie · 23/09/2014 13:10

I watched a film made in 2004 the other day and the women in it all looked fantastic, in long drapey elegant wide trousers - really elegant. I think we are going to look back on the Universal Skinny Jean years in horror. Really - how many people do they suit?

Pooka · 23/09/2014 13:17

You know the 60s/70s/80s style parties?

What will we be wearing in 30 years time to a "let's party like its 2014" party?

No doubt I will be wearing incontinence pads. But what would be the fashion that would sum up now?

I'm wondering about the onesie. Or skinny jeans...?

Twinklestein · 23/09/2014 13:17

Fairly like Superman... except they were the loose cotton, not the stretchy ones you get now... they were gold iirc...

Twinklestein · 23/09/2014 13:18

I agree Vezzie far fewer people suit skinny jeans than wear them...

Floisme · 23/09/2014 13:18

Yup, I think it was my finest, sartorial hour chocolaterainbow! I only wish I still had those hot pants (Don't panic, Mutton Police, I wouldn't wear them, I'd just love to see them again Grin) Who are these people who are always saying you should throw out anything you haven't worn for a year?

Auntlinny · 23/09/2014 13:22

great thread! In about 1984, I was very fond of some tweedy grey baggies, worn with Victorian style laced ankle boots and a grey bat winged top with a black splattered print, red lippie and gunmetal dangly earrings. Also had a tweedie (something about tweed?) black and white pencil skirt to the knee, the same black lace up boots and a lambswool electric blue jumper with fuchsia lippie. Thought I was the bees knees!

Auntlinny · 23/09/2014 13:24

Also, anyone wear dungarees in the style of Kevin Roland? (small voice - me!)

LaurieFairyCake · 23/09/2014 13:24

The Acid era

Luminous yellow blouse with luminous orange 'coat' with a padded jumper with kittens on

Topped with a red beret and Smartie necklace and an Acid smiley brooch

GreatJoanUmber · 23/09/2014 13:29

Oooh yes!

In my early teens - brushed flannel chequered shirt, Levi's 501 ripped at the knees, black DMs. Used to be my uniform for a very long time, and I remember saying to my friend "I'll never wear any other shoes than DMs, ever again!" Grin

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 23/09/2014 13:30

Black wonderbra. See through lace top. Combat trousers. About 1997. Thought I looked like an All Saint Hmm

Floisme · 23/09/2014 13:31

Me too, Auntlinny although I did wear a T shirt underneath, unlike Kevin. I had a red pair and a pale blue pair and I'm sure I saw some in the last Toast catalogue!

Twinklestein · 23/09/2014 13:31

C'mon Eileen, I remember everyone wearing those dungarees...

I had some white dungarees shorts, and some kind of white overalls worn with a hip belt and rolled up legs... I wore them with Palladium shoes...

Twinklestein · 23/09/2014 13:33

Joan Umber I'm really fond of Levi's 501s they were the original bf jean... But I can never wear DMs again, so heavy and uncomfy...

LaurieFairyCake · 23/09/2014 13:34

I wore dungarees at uni with DMs and a vest

foxdongle · 23/09/2014 13:46

About 13 I had my first denim jacket which I covered in badges with sayings like "ton up kid" "If you had it last night smile" and anti-nuclear messages in different languages.

Then I went into full Bikers moll phase real leather Biker jacket, long black boots, ripped jeans plus tickets to Monsters of rock to see AC/DC

Then entered clubbing zone white faux leather trousers (Dh still goes on about them, he loved them) and crop top with flared sleeves.

Still wouldn't mind that biker jacket back though...
