my favourite outfit - "never again" edition

Another thread reminded me of my absolute favourite outfit when I was about 13 (circa 1985): slouchy grey boots, grey cord "baggies", grey anklewarmers, red knit batwing top, all topped off with grey plastic bead jewellery and a grey belt worn over the jumper. I thought I looked THE BUSINESS. I loved it to the extent that I remember telling my friend before going to a Youth Club disco that I would never be embarrassed by it - "70s clothes, flares and that, they're all ridiculous - but batwings and baggies just look great!"

Have you any favourite outfits of yore that you cringe at? Or think of fondly but would never wear again?

(Honourable mention for me also goes to various 90s clubbing outfits, including a silver lame crop top and a green fake fur jacket that looked like I'd skinned a Muppet for its pelt)

Oh, I had two favourites that I can remember- both from when I was 16/17 years old.

One- I wore for my first day at college (I 'reinvented' myself over the summer Grin) 501 button fly bootcut jeans (actually, I still love that style of jean and can't find anything like it now) and a black, brown and cream banded chenile jumper. Yuck, chenile. I wore that outfit a lot.

Two- black velvet trousers from warehouse with a cropped pink t-shirt with a fairy on the front. Hello early 90's.

leedy · 23/09/2014 15:10

You can still get 501s! I have a pair!

Oh Yoghurty! I had forgotten all about chenile jumpers! I had a brown chenile jumper as well. It got really thin after about 2 washes.

leedy · 23/09/2014 16:12

Chenille is back! I saw a peach number in M&S the other day.

Wonder if the wool still goes all thin? And sheds tiny fibres everywhere?

Pandsbear · 23/09/2014 17:47

Oooh things I had forgotten that have come up here:
Wearing bf boxer shorts over black tights.
Wearing 1970s maternity smock top as student. Pink and pin tucked. Not pregnant.
'Velvet' zip through short jump suit. With patterned tights. And DMs.
Back combed hair/dyed burgundy hair (only colour available).
Saggy, baggy grandad tops in varying shades of horrible.
I did rather love my jumble sale men's suit jackets, probably on top of all of the above outfits.
Such a 1989 delight!

treaclesoda · 23/09/2014 17:53

my flatmate at university had a chenille jumper. It was all she ever bloody wore and there was chenille all over our house. But it was ok because she hoovered up after herself regularly. oh no I've just remembered, she never tidied up after herself Angry

bialystockandbloom · 23/09/2014 18:07

Oh god yes, chenille! Forgotten that horror!

Anyone else go through the craze for 'ethnic' kind of peruvian jumpers, ponchos, hats etc in the early 90s?

leedy · 24/09/2014 10:31

I mercifully escaped that one. Though .... tartan tights, anyone?

burnishedsilver · 24/09/2014 11:27

You know leedy, you probably did look the business.

I thought mens levis were the perfect fit. I thought I would never wear womens jeans.

Stupidhead · 24/09/2014 13:27

Hockey Boots, my mums black yoga tights, an old mans shirt from oxfam dyed black worn as a dress and a 6" elastic belt. All topped off with Rimmels best black eyeliner and a full can of Hard Rock hairspray.

I actually haven't changed much but don't borrow my mums tights anymore...

leedy · 24/09/2014 13:31

:)

It's amazing there's any ozone layer left, given the amount of hairspray we all used back in the day...

OP posts:
vezzie · 24/09/2014 13:54

Actually the ozone layer is repairing itself and I take full credit for this, having had a rug re-think

r2d2ismyidealman · 24/09/2014 16:45

Using so much colour, product and heat that my hair kind of stretched and then broke. It was disconcerting. I now have lovely healthy shiny natural hair and don't touch product or colour and only give it a blow dry. Using cheap nail varnish that chipped off within minutes and stayed on that way for weeks. Shopping in charity shops for things I could tailor to suit me as we didn't have any money. Now that I have money I buy things that don't fit nearly as well (am learning to sew to rectify that!).

ijustwanttobeme · 24/09/2014 17:06

1983 ish- Tweed hobble skirt and jacket combo, with lace blouse, tights, gloves and Victorian style ankle boots.b

Worn with black straw hat with pearl hat pin.

like so many othes I thought I looked fab Blush

ijustwanttobeme · 24/09/2014 17:08

Ooh just remembered another outfit- black long skirt, red fitted jumper fishnet tights and red stilettos.

Thought I looked all stylish, when actually I looked like a hooker!!

bialystockandbloom · 24/09/2014 18:27

ijust that actually sounds bang on-trend for 1983, albeit in a Cyndi Lauper-kind of way Grin

My mother had a bag made from a fake armadillo that was bought abroad in the early sixties. It had the tail stitched into its mouth serving as a handle and I shamefully took it to London and pranced up and down Ladbroke Grove with it for years aged seventeen.

I wore it with men's Oxfords (Churches, second hand), round NHS children's spectacles, hair extensions from Antenna (early days of their doing them), a vintage tea dress that drooped at the hem and thick woolly stockings.

I looked like Tavi's mad as a fish ancestor.

leedy · 25/09/2014 15:22

SERIOUSLY NEED PICTURES OF THE ARMADILLO BAG.

My favourite mum castoff was a sort of playsuit/shorts-dress thing she made herself in the 60s. It had psychedelic lions on it and was really hard to get out of to go to the loo. I wore it clubbing A LOT (sorry, other people queuing for the ladies').

  1. Mens vintage Levi's bought up Kings road in that 2nd hand shop. White BOY London t-shirt with black eagle wings tucked into BOY belt a la Madonna. Black shoes with grolsch bottle tops attached. Flicks. Khaki suit jacket with sleeves rolled up. 1988.
  1. Black velvet hotpants. Black opaque tights. Black wonderbra. Hand painted swirly UV see through top. Black hi-top travel fox boots. Mini black backpack on back. UV eyedrops to make eyes glow in club. Blue hair mascara. Whistle and white mime gloves Hmm. 1992. (still have this whole outfit)
bialystockandbloom · 25/09/2014 18:39

We need pictures of your outfit no.2 NOW stairs Grin

GiantGraspingCeramicFist · 25/09/2014 18:50

My best ever rave outfit was fluorescent orange miniskirt that barely covered my arse, sheer T-shirt over Wonderbra, yellow and green fluoro nail varnish, giant platform Swear boots, all topped off with a child's pair of fluorescent-rimmed goggles.

No shame :D

mignonette · 25/09/2014 18:51

Hi Leedy

I have emailed mother asking her to look through her albums to see if she has any. It was epically ugly. :)
