My DP wears a denim jacket with jeans and I hate it - what can I buy him as an alternative?

He wears a great boots and shoes, good flattering jeans, nice shirts or cool tops - but then always puts a hideous denim jacket over the top and immediately looks like a knob.

What's a good alternative for a stylish look, casual but not sporty?

He's mid forties and I'm younger.

this jacket? or maybe a Gillet?

Only1scoop · 21/09/2014 22:35

Oh no the 'denim kid' I couldn't stand this either....Confused

PeacesOfAte · 21/09/2014 22:55

Thanks Think - the link is a bit 'outdoor coat' I think, he'd probably put it on over the denim jacket!

The blazer from PrettyWhite is just too smart, that would be workwear for him. Lovely though, and a great price.

Something in between anyone? I MUST solve this problem.

Leather jacket? Tweed jacket? Peacoat? Barbour

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 21/09/2014 23:11

A zip up hoodie? H&M and Gap do some lobely ones.

Lucked · 21/09/2014 23:13

leather?

Although all the real leather jackets seem really expensive since DH last bought one.

123rd · 21/09/2014 23:16

My dh just wears hoodies unless it's snowing then he has a great Oneil coat.

Lucked · 21/09/2014 23:19

A Fred perry Harrington?

turdfairynomore · 21/09/2014 23:24

My grown up DS has a lovely navy blue hollister heavy canvas jacket. It's similar style to denim jacket but a bit longer in the body so the proportions look better. It looks great with tshirts/shirts/sweaters abc can be dressed up or down.

Twinklestein · 21/09/2014 23:30

Barbour cotton jacket

Twinklestein · 21/09/2014 23:31

I was thinking of the Quo too... tell him OP...

hellsbellsmelons · 22/09/2014 11:17

I agree with the Harrington jacket suggestion.
How old is DH?

dinodiva · 22/09/2014 12:31

My DH just bought this. He chose it all by himself. Wink

squoosh · 22/09/2014 12:38

My immediate thought was a Fred Perry jacket too.

BunnyLebowski · 22/09/2014 12:40

Double denim. Eeek. I don't think I could be seen in public with him!

DP just bought this and it's really lovely.

Twinklestein · 22/09/2014 12:56

oo I like that Bunny.

I think the Harrington is a bit.. erm... spotty chav...

Penguinsaresmall · 22/09/2014 13:01

Are you going to get him to dump the denim jacket completely OP?

Personally I think women can get away with a denim jacket with some outfits but they just look awful on men.

coffeenut · 22/09/2014 13:30

That harrington thing is awful.

My DH would prob wear a v-neck knit over a shirt or tshirt if indoors.

He has a great parka style jacket from superdry and a wool peacoat for outdoors.

Bambi75 · 22/09/2014 14:06

A leather bomber....

Liking all these recent links. Not sure about leather, it maybe looks a bit trendy try-hard? Some of them are lovely but a bit too coat-like perhaps.

His is not a blue denim jacket, it's black, so not quite so bad but definitely bad enough!

Not sure whether to show him some of these links (not the thread though!) or just choose and buy him a gift.

Any chance you could "lose" the jacket even for a bit and force him to go shopping? You could buy it as a present but it sounds as though he clings to an old worn favourite.
DH got a really nice leather jacket in Reiss which wasn't too pricey or fashion try hard
He also got an amazing dark brown sheepskin lined bomber style jacket in a Dunhill factory sale. Cost about 400 I think but was 2500 new Shock - he has lived in it and it has thankfully replaced his previous fav.

If you were going to buy him anything I'd try for a pea coat, something like this. It would look great with jeans and nice boots.
