Straight cut jeans and ankle boots - possible NOT to look frumpy?

Maraki · 15/09/2014 10:59

Following on from a previous thread where it is a no-no to have jeans over ankle boots, I would love some suggestions for how to wear ankle boots with straight cut jeans.

I cannot wear skinny jeans (apple figure, wide hips, they make my very long legs look like parsnips), so it's long length and straight cut for me.

Has anybody managed to make an ankle boot work with a wider leg and not look frumpy?

For the record, I've got my eye on these:
clarks boots and
M&S boots

I need a flat or almost flat boot for running after DS in the park.

I bought a pair of straight leg from Gap thinking I could wear them with ankle boots - big no! they just don't look right and flapped about too much at the bottom.

I have the opposite problem to you - would love long legs!, but I'm short and pear shaped. I have a pair of Baxter jeans from Topshop that are not as tight on me as skinnies, but still go in nicely at the bottom and look really good with ankle boots.

Thanks! Do you wear the jeans over the boots or inside the boots? I can wear boyfriend jeans and I've seen people turning them up, but I guess that would look stupid when the weather turns bad and need to wear thick, black socks Grin

Wear skirts instead

Are you sure you can't wear skinnies? Maybe the problem is the tops you are wearing with the jeans? You might need something longer that is more bum skimming to hide the top of the parsnips. Like a short dress.

Wide topped biker boots give you more space to tuck in a straight leg.

read the three parts of this and you should be a bit wiser
I love baxters but I'm wearing boots that look like hiking boots with them atm when the weather is shit
I look a fule

Ahhhh thank you maraki for starting this thread ! I've been wondering what to do with my straight legged jeans ( I've found these most flattering with my 5' hourglass figure )
I feel really frumpy and look weird with jeans over ankle boots.
LOVE that link ronald makes sense to me !

slalomsuki · 15/09/2014 11:44

Surely its what looks right for you. I wear some of my jeans inside, some over the top and some turned up when with ankle boots. I hate the gap between the top of the boots and bottom of the jeans as it doesn't look right on me.

Nice blog though.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 15/09/2014 11:54

I'm short and just look daft and even shorter and stumper if I wear ankle boots wide enough to stuff jeans in.

I'm happy to remain jeans over the top frumpdom.

In any case I only have size 4 feet on size 16 legs. Either even skinny jeans have too much material to stuff into boots that fit my ankles and look nice or I'd have to buy biker boots.

I'm 46, 5'4", narrow shouldered smallish boobed pear. If I put on a chunky jumper to balance biker boots I look like a misshapen jelly cube.

Maraki · 15/09/2014 11:59

Roanald that link is amazing! So, I've experimented with my jeggings (which I only wore with knee length boots), I cuffed them and tried them with ankle boots with a stacked heel. I think that I can get away with them.

I tried cuffing straight leg jeans with heeled ankle boots and it was just comical Grin.

But, I do wonder what to do when the weather gets bad, as the look will look stupid with socks...and I do need a very comfy pair of boots for when I have to brave the park / playground Hmm

I wear straight leg jeans with Chelsea boots. The boots are like a second skin and the jeans fit over the top. These and these. I live in then in the colder months.

Littlemoocow · 15/09/2014 12:07

Is it me or are only the first 2 parts of that link on jeans and boots available? I was desperate to see part 3 but couldn't seem I get to it

QueenCardigan · 15/09/2014 12:40

I wear strsight leg jeans with boots either unrolled or just cuffed up. They look fine but the boots are grey. If you're styling black boots I think they can sometimes be harder than other colours for some reason.

Seriously just have a play with your boots and jeans and see what looks best on you. Don't get too hung up on rules or what is a no-no Smile

Hebburnisaplaceonearth · 15/09/2014 12:42

here

Last year I wore straight legs over the top of Chelsea boots. I think it only looks strange in her pic because the jeans are stretched over the top.

beachywaves · 15/09/2014 13:03

Have just looked at that blog and realised how out of touch with fashion I am! To my eyes she looks utterly ridiculous and they make her legs look much shorter when cuffed. I am going to stay indoors where it is safe and it doesn't matters what fashion mistakes I make.

Littlemoocow · 15/09/2014 13:20

Thanks hebburn

Petal02 · 15/09/2014 13:29

Fab thread. OP - I struggle with skinny jeans, but if (and only if) I wear a long jumper, tunic, or any sort of top that finishes lower than my bum, then I can just about get away with them.

I think the cuff advice is brilliant, and agree with the poster who suggested having a play around and see what works for you.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 15/09/2014 13:31

Great links thanks. I have some gap straight fit which are really flattering but have been wondering how to wear them with boots!

CambridgeBlue · 15/09/2014 13:36

I definitely think you need to play as I don't think one look fits all - some of the 'right' cuffs on those links look bloody ridiculous and I can't imagine just how unflattering they'd be on me! Also no good for winter - who wants cold ankles?!

mejon · 15/09/2014 13:39

I'll join you beachywaves. Those jeans and boot combinations look ridiculous. I wear flatter Fly wedged ankle boots with my Gap really straight jeans over them. I don't think I look daft (or no dafter than usual Grin).

SpaceStation · 15/09/2014 13:49

I like the rolled up hem look as here

I also think a bit of visible sock looks good if they are thicker woolly socks, or bright, kind of like you meant to show your socks IYSWM. Then the slightly wider rolled-up hem can kind of "sit" on the sock and it doesn't flap around.

Petal02 · 15/09/2014 14:02

I love that rolled up hem look, as per your link, Spacestation

Twinklestein · 15/09/2014 14:09

Who says you can't wear jeans over ankle boots OP?

Honestly some of the things I hear on here are just nuts.

Instead of trying to follow edicts on Mumsnet, which is way behind the fashion anyway, just figure out what suits you and stick to it.

polyhymnia · 15/09/2014 14:21

That link on cuffing etc is really useful, thanks.

itsnothingoriginal · 15/09/2014 16:25

I really like that look too spacestation

Just want to know where the jeans are from - love them!
