Getting a grip! Welcome to the September No Spend/ Low Spend S&B challenge

Welcome to the continuing NO Spend/ Low spend clothes challenge for September.

A huge Well Done to all who stayed with us for August. We had some great no spend results, even if we didn’t all make it, (Oops Laska Blush) but we all learnt what our triggers are and we all spent less.

So, a definite success; and now it’s time to sign up and pledge to get a grip in September.

And a big welcome to old and new S&B obsessed MNers - who just can’t stop buying it all - to join us in our quest to get a grip.

So, what’s it all about?

We all LOVE new clothes, but are short on the willpower to resist, and quite frankly its getting too much ..

We have wardrobes and chest of drawers utterly and totally rammed... a lot of us did make an effort to get rid of some of it last month, (though, come on, we probably do have more we can shift Wink).

We have piles of clothes and shoes we've even forgotten we have, (some with the labels’ still onBlush) .

And it’s a new season -Danger Time-.

But we want to get back into control and wear the lovely things we have and stop being a slave to every new catalogue, website and blog ..

We want to resist the sales and offers and we want our friends and neighbours to know us better than the postmen and the local couriers !

We know they want us to buy into their new lifestyle looks , but we are stronger than them.
-Throw out your catalogues as they arrive!
-Unsubscribe to online shops!

-And let’s get creative and stay stylish without spending even more £££s and without adding to the piles of unused stuff we already have...

So here we go again...

Some Rules
Either commit to No Spend or to a set budget.
Exceptions to No Spend are tights, underwear (knickers and bras) and to replace something that has Genuinely worn out.
Last month we decided that if we did get something then a One in One out policy was a good idea

Lets help each other kick this habit!

We know its hard and we will have to continue to be accountable to each other ..BUT WE CAN DO IT!

So Who's in again? Smile

I'm in, until at least November. I tend to operate a one in/one out policy anyway (yesterday I did one in, three out with shoes!). The only thing I actually need is a warm scarf/wrap thing. Other than that, I intend to buy nothing new but I 'may' buy a few bits in charity shops.

Karbea · 31/08/2014 18:02

Hello,

Checking in!

Zero spend for me in august. Definitely planning zero again in Sept!

CoconutAmericano · 31/08/2014 18:35

Thank you for the new thread laska. I did ok last month, not brilliantly, but ok. This month is going to kick last month's ass! My limit is €100 pm spend. No more, preferably less. If i stick to this pledge i will have money in my bank account instead of an overdraft and i will continue going grey but at a much slower pace Smile.

dawndonnaagain · 31/08/2014 18:43

Okay, I'll give this a go. I'm rubbish. I am however trying to lose weight, although I can't see me losing anymore than half a stone a month, so in theory I shouldn't need anything for at least two months!

PS. Not including the very nice Monsoon top I am currently bidding for on ebay!

Laska42 · 31/08/2014 18:49

Just found three catalogues in my home postbox (forgot to fetch in the post yesterday). Ididnt even look! (one was White Company I think)..scooped them out of the box and straight into the recycling bin unopened..

I need to go through my shoesand boots.. sandals are feeling a bit chilly for work now. I had a result last week when I rediscovered a pair of nice almost new black flats, but yesterday I found myself drooling at some brogues in the Guardian fashion shoo, thinking 'hey, they would be nice'..

(But hang on!... I remebered.. already have some fab blue nubuck £££ ones bought last year in JL...worn probably only once .. Oh dear..)

Welcome dawndonna it was losing weightthat got me inthe state i'min! ( but dont letthat stop you!) , good luck.. we are all very friendly here (and although we do Tough Love , very supportive ) .

A good start is to go through your wardrobe and see what you have you've forgotten about . (if you are anything like me that is!) Its also great for your bank balance (although not all of us are doing that primarily as the reason..) . I made £150 on ebay last month , and yes did spend, about half that, but it all went off my CC bill and I paid another £200 off ) . Kia saved herself over £400 !

I'm definitely in! Spent far too much in August and I'm not buying anything else!

MrPop · 31/08/2014 19:02

Hello - I am in.

Good OP, Laska

Trying for a no spend September.

Have just been ebaying a few things, so will see how that goes.

I do have a few online purchases arriving in the next few days (ordered last week) but will hopefully be sending quite a bit back.

I will only check in briefly as I think surfing the internet is one of my major triggers!

I might come on to post if I feel like buying something and need to be talked down.

Good luck all Flowers

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2014 19:03

Do people really buy new shoes and then forget to wear them?!

Pollywallywinkles · 31/08/2014 19:08

I'm in and hope to do better than I did in August. As my August spend was for Autumn/winter I should be ok this month. So for me, it will be no spending on clothes or beauty products.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/08/2014 19:12

Last month I bought a couple of jumpers (Primark so less than £20 total) and a Uniqlo jacket.
I did a huge sort out and either put in Space Saver bags or put in Charity shop.
So my wardrobe is still nicely colour co-ordinated but less crammed.

I don't look at the sales TBH (unless I'm out and something grabs my eye) but I do get drawn by the new season A/W .
If I wait till October/November, it'll be gone.

So: I need some new boots (last pair were over 9 yo - I wore them when I took DS to see The Chronicles of Narnia and that was 2005 - so they lasted well . Put them into charity shop as they were still really good condition, but rubbed my bony ankles)

New gloves

A couple of H&M jumpers I have my eyes on.

A scarf because I have uncovered ears and neck now with my cropped mop.

Some heavier duty skincare, I know my hands and face get drier in winter (and I have to handwash repeatedly at work)

Jusy spent £120 on Car Tax and £300 on repair, so not flush at the moment. (And school uniform)

I will get the jumpers bought (and the gloves) then apart from essential skincare, I'm IN Grin

cardigal · 31/08/2014 19:15

I'm in clothes-wise but will buy the Elemis tsv from qvc

samesizetoes · 31/08/2014 19:23

I'm in, I always seem to have a shopping list of clothes that i want to buy but I don't need them. I need to learn to make do with what I have. My only allowance will be if I find something in a charity shop but it must be perfect.

cloutiedumpling · 31/08/2014 19:34

Checking in. I didn't manage no spend last month and bought a skirt and a couple of vest tops from Primark. This month I'm hoping to buy a new pair of boots from Clarks. I need wide fit and they don't have them in stock. I know they update their website on a Monday though so will check each Monday. If they are there, I'll buy them. But nothing else. This thread is making me think about each purchase, rather than shopping because I'm bored etc.

PeachandBlack · 31/08/2014 19:44

I'm in for a limited spend, I'm not going to actively shop but if I am out and near a store I don't normally get to, then I may buy. I am planning to get a pair of jeans, possibly some boots and a couple of jumpers, and then a scarf and some gloves when the weather gets properly cold.

victoryinthekitchen · 31/08/2014 20:17

I'm in, I spent loads in the summer sales and have no room for anything else. Only thing I intend to purchase in foundation as I'm tipping the bottle up for last drops. Really going to try :)

carlywurly · 31/08/2014 20:31

I'm in, tried my best last month and spent significantly less than usual including a bargainous whistles looky like top and skirt for £13 rather than £180 Grin

I've cleared out loads so room isn't so much the issue but I'd really like to save some more money towards a house move.

The one in, one out policy works a treat and I'm trying to do one in, two out for maximum challenge (I can spare them!)

thoughtsbecomethings · 31/08/2014 20:37

I really need to not buy anything else I am waiting for some orders to arrive Dh will be having words with me ! Think I will return items as really don't need what I ordered.

Laska42 · 31/08/2014 20:39

Do people really buy new shoes and then forget to wear them?!...

Yup, sadly..Blush.. Just call me Imelda Remuslupin Grin

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2014 20:40

Grin Am not a shoe person, tbh, so only buy new ones to replace falling apart ones.

Laska42 · 31/08/2014 20:52

I love shoes.. dont get the handbags thing though.. I have two ...one is always a shoulder bag I use every day until it wears out, (Currently a red Fossil crossbody one i got from TKmaxx..) and a small wallet size black one I use for holidays/ evening dos etc (its just plain black Tula and ive had it over 15 years)

( Oh and i have a backpack for going walking and cycling .. just boring one from Milletts, and one tote bag for stuffing work stuff in .. its just plain blue and used every work day. )

OP posts:
cloutiedumpling · 31/08/2014 20:55
