How can a woman in her 30s wear a crop top?

Don't say "don't wear it!" because I'm going to ignore you :)

I know crop tops are of questionable taste, specially if you're not 16 years old. But the possibility of wearing a crop top in this weird 90s revival may be the encouragement I need to work on my tummy (that used to be amazing and now, 2 children later, not that much).

So, I promised myself a crop top so I can show off nice abs (if they ever get nice again). Where can I buy a decent one? What is the less ridiculous way to wear them?

Thanks!

Start with a crop top style sports bra (or running vest) and wear for your work outs.

How long do you think it might take to get back the firmness? Because if it's going to be next spring you'd actually want to wear one at other times (I just don't see them as autumn/winter wear) you may well be a totally different size shape by then. Hold off a bit?

schroedingersdodo · 13/08/2014 11:09

I'm planning to wear them this year! Before it gets cold...

My abs are not that bad, I guess a couple of weeks of work out may do the trick (if not, then I'll just forget about it. Probably crop tops won't be fashionable next summer).

If you bought one now you could wear it with dungarees or with those gapey open sided tops. Urban Outfitters (or Urban as my teenage daughter tells me it's cool to say) has them, or you could wear one with high waisted shorts/skirt you'd only have a narrow slit of tummy showing. Are you in good enough shape to wear a bikini comfortably?

nilbyname · 13/08/2014 11:13

I've got one and I'm 37! I wear a close fitting vest tucked onto skinny jeans then my baggy crop top over. This will bey a/w look also.

schroedingersdodo · 13/08/2014 11:19

But I don't want to wear them with anything over them. I ONLY want to wear a crop top if I can manage to tone my abs. Like a reward :)

I'm 39 and wear mine over a long vest!

MrsLettuce · 13/08/2014 11:29

topshop have masses, bet you'll find summat there you'll like. Failing that, asos. Good luck with teh abs Smile

TheFillyjonk · 13/08/2014 11:32

I wear one with nothing under - I'm 27 so not technically in my 30s. My stomach isn't toned or flat but I wear my crop top retro-style with high waisted jeans.

The key is to get one that isn't too low cut, I think. Go for it!

goodasitgets · 13/08/2014 11:33

I've seen them look nice with high waisted skirts, so just revealing a higher bit of the stomach

goldrabbit · 13/08/2014 11:33

It's a very Kim Kardashian look www.google.co.uk/search?q=kim+kardashian+crop+top&client=safari&hl=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=ZD7rU7SiC-me7AbL1YGwBg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=320&bih=460

I quite like it though. Think you need to do it in a dressy way with just a hint of tum. Unless you think you can pull something like this off www.google.co.uk/search?q=lily+allen+crop+top&client=safari&hl=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=wj7rU-LUGo6O7Qax8oDwBw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=320&bih=460

TheFillyjonk · 13/08/2014 11:33

Oh, and mine's from H&M - kind of a striped Bardot style.

schroedingersdodo · 13/08/2014 11:39

Does anyone wear them showing the abs?

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 13/08/2014 11:46

No, showing the abs is naff now. Visible navel not cool - Kim K way is the chic way to do it.

MrsLettuce · 13/08/2014 11:56

Showing abs is indeed not 'the done thing' ATM and, TBH, when Kim K has the chic way to do anything, well, yeah, that says a lot. But, if you want to then fuck what anyone else thinks.

dexter73 · 13/08/2014 12:01

I love this outfit/look.

MrsLettuce · 13/08/2014 12:04

yep, that looks fab! Adding some proper individualism to ones style makes suddenly makes a lot of things workable, IMO.

AbsolutelyCrushed · 13/08/2014 12:04

No, definitely don't wear them showing off your abs.

That's the line between doing the cool 90's revival and looking like you've escaped from the 90's.

goldrabbit · 13/08/2014 12:08

No to abs. You're in your 30s, you've had two kids. It'll be impressive enough without showing a great expanse of tum.

schroedingersdodo · 13/08/2014 12:50

Well, the plan was PRECISELY to be naff! (and to look like a time traveler from 1993).

I don't like to follow trends (then why am I asking questions in SB?) - but I like the look with the high waisted skirt.

I'm going to have another think about the whole thing, and decide what to do ;)

OP posts:
goldrabbit · 13/08/2014 12:56

But you asked for a NOT ridiculous way to wear one?

dexter73 · 13/08/2014 13:00

I would wear one with some low slung jeans or combat trousers then.

schroedingersdodo · 13/08/2014 13:02

Good point, goldrabbit I may go for the high waist look. It's a compromise and I may be able to wear it right now (I think my abs can get away of one inch of flesh exposed).

OP posts:
schroedingersdodo · 13/08/2014 13:04

Dexter73 that's the time traveler look I was thinking of!

Guess I'll wear the high waist now and then later, if I get fit, I'll think about going naff all the way.
