Can I wear a cape without looking like a nobber?

Or a too old goth... Or a reject from a Scottish Widows advert?
I hate wearing anything on my arms, I'm in short sleeves all year round. But obviously, this is not easy to achieve in coats and jackets.

Today I got soaked on the way to work and I only had a hoody with me. The arms were soaked still when I was leaving so I just slung it round my shoulders like a cape and it was like a lightbulb moment!

I would like something darkish coloured and about fingertip length, and with a hood, but am I going to look a twat in it?!

(This is my first foray into s+b! please be kind!)

Great thread title!

I had a lovely cape style thing a couple of years ago, it was waist length and had arm holes. It was hoodless though.

I think the hood is the thing that would make it look a bit Red Riding Hood Gone to the Dark Side.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/08/2014 20:05

This hasn't got a hood and is horribly expensive, but is so nice irl. Not sure it's actually a look I'd want to wear outside of fancy dress these days though.

Zara

CMOTDibbler · 05/08/2014 20:10

I have a wool ASOS one with a hood. I like it, but its not the most flattering thing in the world, not the warmest tbh

AlpacaPicnic · 05/08/2014 20:14

Thank you... I have a feeling that I may have to sacrifice the hood. Maybe go for something more poncho-y...

have a look at vintage as well, such as here shop recommended by the ever-talented tethersend on another thread.

tethersend · 05/08/2014 20:30

Thanks traviata Smile

I bloody love capes. I've got a few, and am roundly mocked on S&B for them

I say get one with a hood. I like this one.

MagratsHair · 05/08/2014 20:46

I had to wear a dark green cape to secondary school so haven't worn one since but I like them. Swishing in a cape is vair satisfying!

I do like the look of that eBay one actually...Smile

MagratsHair · 05/08/2014 20:47

Ah I haven't worn a cape since secondary school ( it was part of the uniform) but I'd wear one again. Swishing in a cape is vair satisfying.

I do like the look of that eBay one actually.

Great thread title OP Smile

Bloody app!

Petal02 · 05/08/2014 20:56

I like the idea of a cape, but fear I'd look like Batman ......

mervynmouse · 05/08/2014 21:04

I just had to come and say thanks for that thread title Grin

This is great thread title - please come to Style and Beauty more often!

I don't see why you should look like a nobber if you wear it with confidence.

In the sewing/knitting world there are loads of patterns for capes or coats with a capey bit so you can't be alone in your need.

I knitted one but my unenlightened DH said I looked like an ewok in it Hmm I wear it regardless as his opinion on style is worthless Grin

AlpacaPicnic · 05/08/2014 22:33

Thank you lovely peeps!

I like that eBay one, and coincidentally it's for sale in the next town over! But sadly it's a size M and I am not...

Ooooh, I like that marksies one, is that 'now' or is it old...?

I have a wool ASOS duffle cape that I really liked when I was pregnant (I could have had five people under there). Not super elegant but cute.

The main thing that annoyed me about it was that I couldn't wear cross-body bags with it, they got sort of mixed up with the sleeves.

LuckySaint · 05/08/2014 23:12

I wear them.
I have one that's poncho style from BR last year and 2 with buttons down the front, one from m&s years ago and the other from Reiss.
I don't do hooded ones though.

Goldilocks. That's what I would think of cape wearing woman

KristinaM · 05/08/2014 23:47

I think that some women have the personality and style to pull off a cape

Only you know if you are one of them Grin

blueemerald · 06/08/2014 00:04

I have an old nurse's cape I found in a vintage shop.

Looks similar to the above pictures. I love it an it does look cool but not super flattering...

I believe the m&s one was out last year but they're bringing it back into stock for autumn/winter

And I misread your thread title and thought you were worried about looking like a Robber. Eg Dick Turpin. But not a bad look anyway
