Can I wear a cape without looking like a nobber?

Or a too old goth... Or a reject from a Scottish Widows advert?
I hate wearing anything on my arms, I'm in short sleeves all year round. But obviously, this is not easy to achieve in coats and jackets.

Today I got soaked on the way to work and I only had a hoody with me. The arms were soaked still when I was leaving so I just slung it round my shoulders like a cape and it was like a lightbulb moment!

I would like something darkish coloured and about fingertip length, and with a hood, but am I going to look a twat in it?!

(This is my first foray into s+b! please be kind!)

Look at no.2 on this list of AW 2014 trends. Seems like you won't be a nobber but very trendy!

Mulberrystreet · 06/08/2014 10:03

I love my cape! But mine has a belt around the middle which makes it slightly more flattering. Not the easiest thing to drive around in though. Arms are slightly restricted!

TheFairyCaravan · 06/08/2014 10:08

I've got a cape, I got it in Dorothy Perkins last year. I love it, I am on crutches all the time so I find it really practical. Only thing was, last winter was so mild I hardly got to wear it!

MagratsHair · 06/08/2014 10:30

I want a cape. And I'm going to buy one this year! :)

OsloGin · 06/08/2014 10:34

I almost buy one every winter but never know what kind of handbag I'd manage to use with one

Castlemilk · 06/08/2014 10:40

In answer to your OP - no, sadly - not really.

VeganCow · 06/08/2014 12:41

Do you really go arm-less in winter? What do you wear, just tshirts, short sleeve jumpers?

Only1scoop · 06/08/2014 12:42

I literally have a cape for every occasion....

I live in them in the winter....

Love em Smile

A cape and a Breton top. Very S&B!

I have a duffle type cape with a hood (though it's navy and not red)

I love it. Nobody else has one and yes some people do stare a bit, partly because they probably think I look like red riding hood and partly because they love my style Grin

I bought it off eBay for £20

I didn't wear it last year because I had lost weight and managed to fit into my old faithful normal duffle but I am definitely getting it out again this year as I have missed it.

Ooh, still more answers!
Have I got the panache to style out a cape - probably. Until a few short weeks ago, my hair was tipped blue. Before that it was green and red, before that it was purple and pink!

I do go armless in the winter. Even if I put on a jumper, I just end up pushing the sleeves up. I have a permanent t-shirt tan.

I'm 'self insulated' fat and dont feel cold often...

Thank you for making me want something I didn't even know I needed, because now I do NEED a cape.

Off to explore the tinternet

noddyholder · 06/08/2014 13:21

I love capes Have several and wear all winter.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/08/2014 21:59

Not sure if any of you lovely cape pushers remember, but today I bought a cape/wrap thingy!

It's black but slightly sparkly, no hood, kind of lightweight wool so not too heavy. No fastener at the front so it just drapes. Best of all, it was only £15 from TKMaxx.

I put it on and DH decided I was trying to be Batman... I'm not sure if that's something to be pleased or annoyed about but I don't care, I like my wrap!

oh a friend of mine has a gorgeous navy blue duffle type cape with a hood and she looks amazing in it. It is lovely and v.flattering.

She let me wear it once when my jacket wasn't warm enough and it suited me too. V.flattering cut.

I don't know where she got it but now I want one! good luck OP Grin

I have an M&S one (bought about 2-3 winters ago ) I took it to a dry cleaners to see how much it would cost to have to faux fur removed (slleves and neck)
About £40+
The cape cost me £39 (still has the tag on ) so I'm going to remove the blardy fur myself (but it might only be removed on the sleeves. I can cope with it round my neck. I also hate sewing)

Kablooger · 24/08/2014 02:27

I got one a few years ago. Rarely wore it. Plus - handbags

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 24/08/2014 07:12

Yes, what about handbags?

What do all the cape-wearers on this thread do about the handbag situation?

CoconutAmericano · 24/08/2014 07:21

Massimo Dutti have a couple. I love this one:
