Would it be complete lunacy to trim my own hair?

I need my split ends trimming. I have a huge scruffy amount of them. I am not a fan of going to the hairdressers, I know it should be a lovely relaxing experience but for some reason I just don't enjoy it. I also would not be able to go to the hairdressers until weekend as I have the kids off school. Added to which I hate paying £20 for a dry trim that takes only 10 minutes.
Does anybody else cut their own hair with decent results?
Should I go and lie down and come to my senses and wait until weekend when I can visit the hairdresser?

Ipad wouldn't work. One of the kids has a severe disability and can't be unsupervised for even two seconds.
Think I might just wait until weekend and wear my hair up until then.

How long is your hair?
I cut my own armpit length hair - it already had a layered cut so it doesn't matter if it isn't perfect. I have got compliments on my new haircut before when I've cut it myself! Lots of tutorials in You Tube.

It is around armpit length, maybe an inch below my armpit. I really shouldn't have let the ends get this bad but I have been wearing it curly for the last few months (naturally very curly) and the curl structure hides the scruffiness quite well. Now I have straightened it and the split ends are very obvious.

I have had a look at you tube and some of the videos make it look quite easy but knowing me it will be anything but easy.
I am tempted to ring hubby and tell him to buy me some hair scissors on his lunch break so I can trim my hair tonight.
I am working on the theory that if I only trim a very small amount and it looks dreadful I can get the hairdresser to sort it out at weekend.
Of course that will mean losing an inch instead of half an inch and having to explain to the hairdresser why it is such a mess.

I cut my own hair all the time, it's really not rocket science, particularly if you are just trimming the ends. Get proper hairdressing scissors and watch some YouTube tutorials. Don't cut straight across, but cut at a 45 degree angle, snipping up into the hair, videos will show you the technique.

I've decided to cut and colour my own hair from now on, taking inspiration from Joanna Lumley who said she does it. I just cut the same amount off the bottom of sections of my hair, and I can get my colour/highlights exactly where I want them in about a tenth of the time.
I HATE going to the hairdressers. I hate the sitting there, the inane chit chat, the neck-wrenching hair washing and the colossal time and money wasting. DIY for me now!

I cut my own for years (back to going to a stylist now). It's easy if you want long layers. I used the ponytail method, and a gadget called a 'Creaclip'. It looked good, and I was happy with it.

That wouldn't bother me as currently I get "it must have been absolutely ages since you had this cut it's full of split ends". It always is ages between cuts and it is always an absolute mess by the time I go and have it cut because I find it a horrible experience. I had a great hairdresser who always left my hair looking fabulous but then he moved to new premises in another area it is too far away to go for a trim or dry cut.
I then tried a few more hairdressers and can't stand the false chirpiness and chatter about the weather or holidays and none of them have been able to cut my hair the way that I like.
I may have to brave it and go the hairdressers though as my DH has refused to buy me any scissors as he thinks I will just make a mess (I cut his hair every week and our sons hair every month).

I have nearly bra-strap hair and this is the haircut I do. I've done this about 6 times now - i downloaded the (deeply annoying but effective) video to my desktop so I can very quickly do it when necessary!

She gets her sister to trim before the layering, but I just pull my hair straight and trim off half an inch or so off before I begin. I can't imagine paying for a haircut now - this works brilliantly on my hair.

DH cuts the back of my hair, I do the front layers. I find it pretty easy, and much prefer it to the hairdressers

I do my own - as well as all the same irritations with hairdressers as the OP, I also have hair that grows very fast, so styles grow out in 3-4 weeks. I also get compliments on my hair, so figure I can't be doing that bad a job...

The one thing I miss about the hairdressers is the blow dry, so if I have a special occasion I get it washed and blow dried to look smooth and glam

I have a knock-off Creaclip. I haven't actually cut my own (because it's in an above-shoulder-length single-length bob and (a) in every single Creaclip YouTube video where there's a successful Creaclip cut of that type it's a friend-administered one rather than a self-administered one) and (b) in the handful of YouTube videos where someone tries to do that haircut to themselves with a Creaclip it looks a big hot mess at the end) -- BUT arguably more daringly I've had my 9yo cut my hair using it (although I opted to go for more texture in the ends rather than aiming for a perfectly blunt cut as I reckoned that was easier to get right).

I cut my own, haven't been to the hairdressers since my wedding 2 years ago! My hair is below my waist though so v easy to bring it all to the front and cut a straight line though. I have long split fringe at the front (that kardashian/real housewives kinda style) which is easy to do too.

I would not be able to cut myself a neat bob, that's for sure!!

My DH does mine. I have hair just below shoulders, and whenever hairdressers do it, they do fancy layering that looks raggedy and rubbish. I have lots of fine wavy hair, that if it's cut very bluntly and straight across the bottom, looks thicker and more modern, I can wear it wavy / messy and it doesn't look mumsy like when hairdressers do it! Layers just don't work on my hair.

I spend £££ on colour though.

It's not really about the cost; it's finding the time with kids and not being able to find a hairdresser who can cut it how I like and not make me cringe with chit chat.

If you wear it curly that hides a multitude of sins, but I think it would be hard to cut your own hair so that it looks even when straight. If you have any friends who are good with that kind of thing, could you ask them to do it, in exchange for a nice bottle of wine (after the cut!)? Sounds dangerous I know but some people have a steady hand and it is easier on someone else. Otherwise I'd wait till the weekend, things can go very wrong and hair dressing scissors vary a lot in quality. Long term hopefully you'll find a hairdresser you prefer, not easy I know.

My secret agenda - go back to your curls!! They hide self trimming mistakes and without heat from the straighteners there might not be split ends. Ok, finished, sorry

Have you thought about looking into a hairdresser who will go to your house? When I lived in Italy for a little while DH hated the hassle of going to barbers (lazy even pre-kids ;) but luckily one of our neighbour's sister-in-laws was a mobile hairdresser who would come to our home, put a mat down and trim his hair for a small fee and a cappu

I finally picked up the courage and trimmed it myself. It was only half an inch that needed trimming due to having split and scruffy ends. It doesn't really look any different than when I go the hairdresser.

You do know you can't leave it like that don't you??? We need to see pictures pls...
