Is it ok to wear a maxi dress to a wedding?

I'm going to a wedding in August and would love to wear a maxi dress.

Is it suitable?
If so, what type?
Don't want to end up looking like I'm trying to be a bridesmaid :-)

Definitely ok, in fact perfect for a summer wedding.. Maybe with some dressy flip flopsSmile

PedlarsSpanner · 20/07/2014 17:37

Yes ofc a maxi dress will be fine

Rules - 1 no white/bridal style; 2 no billowing fabric, a slim column is most flattering. That is all.

Feel free to ignore my second rule.

polyhymnia · 20/07/2014 17:38

Not my personal taste for weddings but If it's a nice stylish maxi - not beachy looking - and well accessorised definitely acceptable for a summer wedding, I'd say.

Bowlersarm · 20/07/2014 17:41

They vary so much.

Agree with poly, it can't look at all 'beachy'

polyhymnia · 20/07/2014 18:54

Unless of course you are going to a beach wedding! (But presume you're not or you'd have said).

polyhymnia · 20/07/2014 18:58

Have seen far too many inappropriately beachy maxis in Central London and suburban high streets this weekend but that's a whole different thread.

commsgirl · 20/07/2014 19:47

It's fine.

Although I did go to a wedding once where a guest had almost the exact same dress on as the bridesmaids. Same colour. That was not fine.

MissMiss1 · 20/07/2014 20:22

It's not a beach wedding

Fav anyone suggest any?
I'm not very good at picking
Would prefer something without a really high neck line n am thinking pastel colours rather than strong?

If you are going pastel I'd probably look for something with a pattern rather than a single colour as a single colour maxi is a bit risky for the bridesmaid look! A maxi is fine though, I wore a monsoon one with black and white stripes to a wedding a couple of years ago and loved it.

polyhymnia · 21/07/2014 18:51

Definitely avoid all over pastel for bridesmaid look. Don't need to wear a high-necked one, but suggest avoiding those that are too cut-away, plunging, strapless, etc to avoid the beach dress look.

It's hard to recommend something specific without knowing your size, height, shape and colouring. An idea of budget is also helpful. That said, this is lovely

MrsLettuce · 21/07/2014 19:19

Great linking there Lettuce Hmm

this one

catwithflowers · 21/07/2014 19:23

MrsLettuce, that is lovely

margaritasbythesea · 21/07/2014 19:25

Have alook at monsoon. They are certainly aiming t make these. They may not be your cul of tea but I think they have some nice ones

PaperPomPom · 21/07/2014 19:26

I've worn a royal to pastel blue silk ombré one to a few weddings. Accessorised with cream belt to reduce the billow and cream jacket to smarten up, cream shoes. No danger of looking like the bride or a bridesmaid, sort of Grecian by the time I had finished.

MissMiss1 · 22/07/2014 21:55

Hi ladies
I'm a size 8-10, height 5ft 8, no boobs, hate my back

Help!

Plus what shoes with a maxi?

OP posts:
MrsLettuce · 22/07/2014 22:13

Ah, right then then one I linked would work a treat. Flat sandals would work well.

Bodicea · 22/07/2014 22:24

I do occaisionay wear the odd maxi dress but Personally I wouldn't wear a maxi to a wedding. I think it is too informal and can look a bit wag x

MrsLettuce · 22/07/2014 22:38

OK Bodicea, yes, wag-ish and informal - you give a lovely a consistent argument Smile

So, right, aiming for pastel but not bridesmaidy plus back coverage:

sleeveless, print
very pretty
too high a neckline?
floaty
Love this, but maybe too Margo Leadbetter for most

Bodicea · 22/07/2014 22:49

I stand by my argument. A lot if maxis do look both informal and wag. I don't think the wag look is formal just v showy.

However I do like your second suggestion ( the lace mango one). It is very pretty and would look lovely at a wedding.

I wore a gorgeous red maxi to a wedding recently - was very simple, slightly flowy with some beading at the waist. Wore it with black ballet shoes (I have dodgy feet and can only wear flats, but it looked lovely).
