Somebody explain the merits of this dress to me please

So, I've been doing some fairly random internet wanderings, vaguely wondering whether I could find a naice dress for my cousin's wedding in September (want maximum stylishness for minimum outlay Wink) and thought I'd look at TKMaxx GoldLabel.

Marni dress - lovely colours and back IMO.
But - nylon, see-through and unlined?? For 500+ smackeroonies? Really?! Shock

I am not even prepared to consider the £100 they are asking for.
What am I missing? Or is it a matter of Emperor's New Clothes here?

It's really, really dull and washed out looking too.

It's a no from me.

whereisshe · 19/06/2014 09:21

It's just trading off the label to try to bamboozle people into thinking it's a nice dress. Which is the tkmaxx operating model. Apparently their labels create made-for-outlet clothes that aren't anywhere near the quality of the main label.

ThrowAChickenInTheAir · 19/06/2014 09:22

No from me too. It looks a bit like a pinny/housecoat. But then I'm quite often Confused at items declared to be fab so have concluded I probably know nothing about such things.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/06/2014 09:25

It's hideous. It looks like a tablecloth in a cheap café. And that's not even mentioning the see-through fabric.

starfishmummy · 19/06/2014 09:58

Um....

I am probably not the most stylish person in the world (ok scrub the probably. I have on an ancient cardi, five year old skirt and a t shirt) and even I think its hideous.

Joey8 · 19/06/2014 10:13

Wow that is one hideous dress!

Wasn't there previously another thread on hideous dresses from TK Maxx? Seriously, who buys these things?!

lurkingaround · 19/06/2014 10:17

It's like the lovely Stella McCartney and her plastic vegan leather shoesHmm. 500 for plastic shoes? I know people will tell me fabulous design etc but I cannot get my head around it.

buttercrumble · 19/06/2014 10:17

Awful

scarletforya · 19/06/2014 10:19

It's absolutely horrible.

Dull, baggy, shapeless, insipid, overpriced!

EmmanuelWoganberry · 19/06/2014 10:21

That is hideous. Someone daft will pay it though.

miffybun73 · 19/06/2014 10:23

It's awful, I wouldn't pay £19 for it.

PacificDogwood · 20/06/2014 22:11

Oh, consensus! Grin

Thank you, all.
I posted this in utter bewilderment and then forgot all about it Blush
Just come back on my laptop and TKMaxx is still open, so was reminded to come back.

Not just me then - that's reassuring.

So, off to find a decent summer wedding guest dress that is child-proof, but stylish, excellent quality but not expensive Wink

What about this?

JapaneseMargaret · 20/06/2014 23:16

I think it could look good, on the right person, with the help of an amazing stylist...

But why would you go to all that effort, when there are a zillion nicer, and better-priced dresses out there?

francesthebadger · 21/06/2014 00:01

Now I quite like that first dress. Wouldn't spend £££s, but I do like that retro, made it from my tablecloth/old curtains, feel.

Finding it harder to feel the love for this though. Good for watching Le Tour de Yorkshire perhaps?

LeoandBoosmum · 21/06/2014 04:04

Hobbs and Karen Millen are both in sale right now. Hobbs had very nice dresses last time I looked and free delivery on spends over £50. Karen Millen always has nice dresses for weddings.

KarlWrenbury · 21/06/2014 07:11

theres is a lovely mint velvet one - their dresses normally like gypsy style sacks but I like this

KarlWrenbury · 21/06/2014 07:13

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 21/06/2014 07:26

The Marni dress is awful. What a sad looking thing it is.

Karl - I have a Mint Velvet printed silk dress and it's lovely. I stalked it, some seasons ago, until it was reduced to £30 and I've loved wearing it. Printed silk dresses can be so great.

KarlWrenbury · 21/06/2014 07:28

if you look at all their other dresses they are grey and black
SO dull

mysteryfairy · 21/06/2014 08:16

I don't think Marni make outlet stuff for tk maxx as suggested up thread. A lot of Marni stuff is amazing, that is not, hence why it's ended up remaindered in tk maxx. It's certainly not a brand that they have a lot of churned out in there.

lurkingaround · 21/06/2014 15:23

Saw that pink River Island dress the other week, it's really lovely. V bright but gorgeous.

KarlWrenbury · 21/06/2014 15:59

very bright and suits those of us who normally look cack in dresses
