It's time to invest in some Birkenstocks, but which ones?

The sun is shining, I'm thinking of summer and have decided now is the time to invest in some Birkenstocks.

But which ones?
I like the Arizona, but can't decide between black or white.

Can anyone help?
Do you have them and are they comfy?

I have Madrid and they are excellent.

BigArea · 18/05/2014 18:37

I'm on my second pair of Mayaris and I love them - they stay on my feet better than Madrids so I feel more secure in them IYSWIM www.farfetch.com/uk/shopping/women/birkenstock-mayari-sandal-item-10708307.aspx?gclid=CIfroYuBtr4CFUXnwgodOaUACg&country=215

I've been wearing (white) Arizonas for years as Madrids fall off my feet, and I can't deal with toe-posts. I love them. V tempted by a Top Shop version in orangey tan too.

Raia · 18/05/2014 18:59

I'm thinking of getting some Arizonas as well after wearing some dupes from Office for ten years that are looking a bit grubby now Confused

What's the sizing on real Birkies like?

MrsRogerSterling · 18/05/2014 19:02

Loads in TK Maxx at the moment. I don't get on with the Madrids but do love the Gizeh, I have them in silver, had them a few years and still look good.

MrsRogerSterling · 18/05/2014 19:03

I do find that with proper Birkenstocks (not lookalikes) thet take a bit of breaking in, time for the footbed to fit your foot.

Floralnomad · 18/05/2014 19:07

My sister just bought me a pair of Papillo Sydney ( double strap ones) . I love them and I didn't need to break them in because I have Birkenstock shaped feet . Personally I always go up rather than down a size on Birkenstocks ie I'm a 6.5 but wear a 7 in them.

cookielove · 18/05/2014 19:15

I am a size 6 and wear a 6 in my birkies! I have a lovely pale green which they don't sell anymore. Been going strong for around 10 years I luff them!

BigArea · 18/05/2014 19:21

I'd say go half a size down

bonzo77 · 18/05/2014 19:21

Love my mayaris. I have tendinitis in the front of one of my feet and they're the only style that don't aggravate it that muchThey're my second pair. I have very narrow feet and down size 2 sizes.

This is the look I'm thinking of, but black or white?

Where is the best place to buy them?

I have lots of pairs of Birkies but this year I bought the Clark's version and goodness me they are SO much more comfy, they are like slippers!

KoalaDownUnder · 19/05/2014 04:01

I have silver Gizeh at the moment, but I would go for navy or white Madrid next time round. I don't think the Gizeh are very flattering, to be honest. (Although we are talking Birkies here, so arguably none of them are! :D)

I think black is quite heavy for summer. Navy, white or tan Madrid would be my pick.

KoalaDownUnder · 19/05/2014 04:04

Bugger - not Madrid! Don't like them...I meant Arizona!

The navy Arizona.

butterfliesinmytummy · 19/05/2014 04:04

I have Arizonans in velvet grey suede. The suede part is super soft and comfortable, I find the uppers in regular birkis take ages to soften and rub my feet.

MrsLundyBancroft · 19/05/2014 10:32

I have had brown leather Gizeh Birkenstocks and they've done me a couple of years. They're beginning to look slightly tatty now so I'm downgrading them to beach and garden sandals and have just bought some Mayaris in white. I'm slightly nervous as I've gone for Birko-flor rather than leather.

I love them though. Both bought from Amazon - good prices. As for sizing, I'm a 6 and I buy a 39 (6) but the narrow fit.

reluctantironer · 19/05/2014 11:41

I have black and brown arizonas - both bought a couple of years ago. I'm normally a 5 but had to go down 2 sizes. However, I've just bought some white arizonas and have only gone down one size and they fit just perfectly - having said that I am a small size 5. I love arizonas - wish I could justify a navy pair to add to my collection!

carrie74 · 19/05/2014 11:44

Mayari for me too. I've been wearing white ones for the last few summers (replaced them this year).

ChablisChic · 19/05/2014 11:48

I bought the black Arizonas a week ago and have been wearing them ever since - I must also have Birkie shaped feet, as I've found them comfy from the start. I normally take a 7, and ended up buying the 7. I tried a 6, which were fine in the main, but my toes were touching the ridge around the edge so sized up.

SoFishy · 19/05/2014 12:29

I need an ankle strap so they don't fly off, so my fave style is yara.

Arizona are quite good at staying on, if you don't need an ankle strap.

Both black and white are classic but I like the natural brown leather ones.

bubblegun · 19/05/2014 12:34

I am wearing Mayaris today and was just thinking what excellent shoes they are, before I saw this thread. Arizonas also v comfortable but not as nice looking.

Yara looks nice but I need ones I can take off without undoing them if i'm carrying a child.

Sunnyshine · 19/05/2014 12:35

Make sure you get the correct width fitting or you will get the Birkenstock foot fart!!! Found out only after i bought my farty shoes ??

MrsLundyBancroft · 19/05/2014 12:43

Oh Sunny?

I occasionally get a foot fart but the wide hang off me and I have to use my toes to cling on to them which is no good...

I have just ordered these in silver.

I also have an Arizona pair in chocolate brown, another Florida pair in a flowery pattern, and these in black

Coumarin · 19/05/2014 13:13

I have narrow feet, are they hard to keep on?

I had a similar style years ago and felt like I was clinging on to them with my toes.
