The dreaded first day of summer....what did you wear today?

NumptyNu · 18/05/2014 17:46

I really struggle with summer clothes. I guess I don't like exposing my milky, slightly wobbly legs etc.

Any 40+ ladies out there with a less than perfect bod want to share what your 'hot day' wardrobe looks like?

I have denim shorts nada vest on and feel rubbish. I wouldn't leave the house looking like this.

Any suggestions for flattering, cool clothes in this weather?

Not 40+ but not far behind and definitely not a perfect bod as had another baby in March.

What about casual dresses? I wore this today and a lady stopped me in the street today to say how nice and summary I looked and that it is a lovely dress. It meant more to me that she could have known!

I have the spring flowers on navy.

Leggings and a floaty knee length dress generally works, can be dressed down with flip flops, up with smart sandals, or worn with canvas trainers on cooler days.

milkingmachine1 · 18/05/2014 19:05

Dresses are definitely the way forward. I'm also a fan of the tunic/short dress and leggings combo. I'm pear shaped and shorts just look awful on me. In fact I think it's very hard to pull off shorts as generally they are very unflattering.

I've got that boden dress (posted above) from a couple of years ago and I'd recommend it. It's a great shape, very flattering.

Saurus72 · 18/05/2014 19:06

I wore a black patterned dress, knee length, with silver Saltwater sandals - felt cool calm and collected! I think dresses are definitely the way to go - much less hassle, no co-ordinating of outfits, and just easier when it's hot.

AnguaResurgam · 18/05/2014 19:08

Cropped jeans and a t-shirt. Which made me realise that I am still too pudgy round the middle, but I wasn't going out so it didn't matter.

Will need to shift those last few pounds and look for t-shirts that skim not cling (is their anything that's like a lighter weight version of Poetry hemp Tshirts?)

Doshusallie · 18/05/2014 19:09

The vest top and trackie bottoms I slept in. [slattern]

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/05/2014 19:10

Sleeveless White Company jersey dress (knee length) and sandals. My legs are white but I'd rather have white legs than wear leggings tbh.

TheFairyCaravan · 18/05/2014 19:14

I've been in a bikini in the garden! Most definitely would not go down the street in it!

I have got some nice knee length shorts that I would wear with a decent t-shirt and sandals.

Mostly in the Summer I wear knee length dresses or skirts.

Nocomet · 18/05/2014 19:14

Linen shorts and a at shirt. Holiday wear. I'd put a bra and longer cropped trousers on for public consumption. Legs aren't as pasty as sometimes, but they do need shaving.

Blackjackcrossed · 18/05/2014 21:16

Boyfriend shorts - mid thigh, winter white cotton long sleeved shirt and a pair of Birkinstock Arizona's - slouched around the garden most of the day but popped out to the supermarket. I love wearing shorts, just need to get some colour on my legs.

DracoMalfoysHairGel · 18/05/2014 21:21

50s Vintage cotton dress in pale blue.
I do struggle with summer clothes like you say OP. Am fine for a day at the beach , it's clothes for pottering about town that throws me.

ThisBitchIsResting · 18/05/2014 21:28

Beige jersey midi skirt - Hush
Navy racerback vest - Peacocks
Cobalt vest underneath - Primark
Gold Havs

Was happy with my outfit. I had a lovely morning pottering in the house alone so had time to outfit plan for heading out with family this afternoon Smile a tan would improve the look.

alittlebitmeh · 18/05/2014 21:30

I'm 43 and just wore a black maxi dress. comfy, cool, simple and kept my glow white legs covered. Looked nice to Grin

frankietwospots · 18/05/2014 21:51

I wore these Boden shorts in the Navy Bloom and a navy vest top to mow the lawn today.

frankietwospots · 18/05/2014 21:52

ooops, link here: www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Shorts/WJ032/Womens-Bistro-Short

NumptyNu · 19/05/2014 06:56

Is the Boden fern dress suitable for wobbly bits? I'm a 10, but post 3 babies have gained some podge I'm the belly area! It's not too clingy is it?

Good on you with your bikini in the garden !

I wore an orange capped sleeved, above the knee dress from Dorothy Perkins.

Dresses make me feel a lot better than separates and no hassle deciding what to wear with it.

OverAndAbove · 19/05/2014 07:47

I have the Boden bistro shorts in three different colourways and they are SO flattering. I wore the stripy ones yesterday with a navy shell top and navy Havs.

Today I'll be at work so am wearing a green knee length dress (really old Laura Ashley one) and tan block heel sandals. Life is so simple when it's sunny!

PastaandCheese · 19/05/2014 08:13

No numpty it's really nice. There is no way I'd be wearing it 10 weeks post DC2 if it was clingy!

It's 20% off with free delivery and returns today too.

Dresses are the way forward but I would suggest moisturising your legs with a summer, light tanning lotion. Makes a difference.

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2014 08:16

Also 40+ and milky white. Yesterday I wore:

Mountain biking kit
White stuff dress, a few years old and bit lies
Running kit.

It was a busy day.

NumptyNu · 19/05/2014 08:26

Ooh. Thanks all. Is the Boden discount for everyone today or so you need a code?

OP posts:
threedeer · 19/05/2014 08:32

I wore a maxi dress with a cropped very thin cardi and wedge sandals. Felt good and DC said I looked nice!

MooseyMoo · 19/05/2014 08:38

20% off Boden until Wed with J9A4

kalidanger · 19/05/2014 08:45

I'm 40 and wore a black maxi dress with a sort of built-in vest... plus cycling-short length leggings underneath as I get sweaty cuz I'm fat :) Flip flops and a statement bangle.

Cropped trousers aren't very flattering on anyone who is 'chunky', in my experience. Of being chunky.

PepperMallow · 19/05/2014 09:19

Hi pasta, can you bf in it?
