The dreaded first day of summer....what did you wear today?

I really struggle with summer clothes. I guess I don't like exposing my milky, slightly wobbly legs etc.

Any 40+ ladies out there with a less than perfect bod want to share what your 'hot day' wardrobe looks like?

I have denim shorts nada vest on and feel rubbish. I wouldn't leave the house looking like this.

Any suggestions for flattering, cool clothes in this weather?

I had that Boden dress in navy a couple of years ago but I didn't find it quite stretchy enough to BF in. But maybe it's different now.

PepperMallow · 19/05/2014 09:30

Thanks Frankie.

SuperFlyHigh · 19/05/2014 09:57

yesterday I wore Tara Jarmon floral skirt and white lacey/plain back sleeveless top (Oasis) and Superga animal print trainers (as walking). wished I'd brought some sandals/flip flops though.

Knee length cotton dresses. Boden from ebay or White Stuff with 20% off. Leg make up for the 'not yet brown' stage. I would literally cry if someone told me I had to wear a pair of shorts in public. Smile

PastaandCheese · 19/05/2014 11:15

I'm breastfeeding in it! I've cut some vest tops down to make crop tops to put under wrap dresses.

I pull the crop top up to give a bit of coverage.

I think I'm selling myself another one in a different colour here.

kentishgirl · 19/05/2014 11:29

Nearly 50, white as a sheet of paper, size 18 with wobbly bits, don't give a shit if other people don't like it.

I wore mid-thigh length shorts, a thick cotton t-shirt (doesn't cling) with capped sleeves to protect shoulders from sunburn, and flat sandals. I wore those out.

Please don't be restricted because you are white and wobbly! There's a huge difference between not wanting to go out looking a sight because you are wearing clothes that don't fit/are just wrong unless you are a skinny 14 year old (cropped top and Daisy Dukes), and being ashamed to wear perfectly normal clothes just because you don't fit the stereotype of 'attractive body'.

On the white thing - I used to be embarrassed by this. I have two colours. White. Sunburnt. I'm now very happy with white. I had a Eureka moment years ago when I wore a skirt to work in the summer and a woman made a bitchy comment about 'I wouldn't go out like that with legs that colour'. It struck me that she wouldn't say that to someone of any other colour. I told her she was being racist and enjoyed watching her goggle and stammer for a minute. Since then I've decided to be proud of who I am and let my legs out to dazzle everyone with the glare Grin. You wouldn't tell a black person they are a bad colour they should feel embarrassed about, and should bleach themselves. So why do the same thing to yourself?

goodasitgets · 19/05/2014 11:30

Now I'm eyeing up two boden dresses thanks to this thread Grin
I wore a new look maxi skirt (grey marl) which has a split on one side. River Island v old black silky vest
Gold crystal havianas

I could do with some flip flops I reckon. Any nice ones about?

This will be my next purchase

www.sainsburys-live-well-for-less.co.uk/tu-clothing/products/women/lemon-print-dress/

I usually wear maxi skirts/dresses, cotton tees, tops & kaftans plus jeans & linen trousers.

The trick is to wear natural fibres & cover up as much as possible to avoid sunburn. Floaty cuts or fitted clothing one size up to allow for air circulation.

NumptyNu · 23/05/2014 08:32

Thankyou for your wise words Kentish.

I wear jeans or cropped jeans with thin cotton shirts (sleeveless, short- or long-sleeved) with a thin cardigan if needed. If it's baking hot I'll wear a cotton dress or a floaty skirt with a vest top. I do wear shorts but in the garden mostly - I might venture to a garden centre in them but wouldn't go to proper shops - slim 49 year old legs with thread veins, a bit of cellulite & a couple of warty lumps - nice Grin

WitchWay · 23/05/2014 08:45

Msvenus that lemon dress is pretty - unfortunately I look awful in yellow Sad

Captainbarnacles1101 · 23/05/2014 09:03

I'm gonna buy that boden dress now. Just need size advice. I'm an 18/20. What size would u buy. Do they come up small in size or are the sizes just normal.

PastaandCheese · 23/05/2014 10:25

I think Boden come up big so I'd say go for the 18. Mind you, it's free delivery and returns at mo so you could order both sizes and see which fits you best?

Captainbarnacles1101 · 23/05/2014 12:50

thanks Pasta! Have ordered both and a parka and a blouse! Tellin my other half it's your fault! Wink

TeenyfTroon · 23/05/2014 13:03

Just found this thread - is it too late for Boden discount? I've never had anything from them so wondering about size. Could be 10, 12 or 14 but wobbly round the middle and can't stand anything making this obvious!

PastaandCheese · 23/05/2014 13:19

Try HSCW for 20%. It was working yesterday.

Captain we just need the good weather back now :-(

TeenyfTroon · 23/05/2014 21:43

Thanks Pasta - I've just ordered and your code worked perfectly. Brilliant, 20% makes a big difference!
