Just that really. I notice myself looking quite tired lately. Just having the odd glass is difficult really. I always want another! I am thinking of becoming teatotal.

DH is teetotal and always has been. He looks older though. But he has an unhealthy diet, smokes 20 a day and has a stressful job. Not drinking helps as part of a healthy lifestyle but not on its own. Smoking does the most damage to skin IMO.

BrianTheMole · 20/04/2014 19:02

I drink and look a good ten years younger than I am. I expect the alcohol has preserved my skin Smile. The only person I know who is teetotal looks older than she is. I guess thats just bad luck, bad genes etc.

Brian

sugar is also a preservative, my reason for not cutting it out! Grin

My mother is a lifelong teetotaler, never smoked, wore makeup only very rarely. Active life, fresh air, natural diet. She is now 85 and definitely looks old, but as a younger woman she had lovely, fresh-looking skin. I wouldn't say she looked younger than her age, however. "Fresh" and "healthy" are probably better descriptions, and tbh I'm not sure how much of that was just genetic.

PurpleBouncingHoppily · 20/04/2014 19:12

(caveat: she isn't absolutely, completely teetotal, more the special-occasions-only type. She's certainly never been a routine drinker.)

ZingHasAHotCrossBunInTheOven · 20/04/2014 19:17

yes, I'm not teetotal either, I do have communion wine and the occasional sip of champagne, but that's it.

I always feel left out at events though.

Floisme · 20/04/2014 19:21

I can't comment on being teetotal but I know a couple of people with a drink problem and, quite apart from what they're doing to their health, they look like shit.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/04/2014 19:25

I have more or less given up alcohol and I still look like shitGrin

I didn't drink loads anyway but my genes are crap, I work nights and I run outdoors in all weathers. Don't think any of those help.

bigTillyMint · 20/04/2014 19:28

DM is 83 and still has great skinEnvy She barely ever drinks even a glass of wine and never ever sits in the sun. She also only drinks very weak tea and only ever smoked the odd menthol cigarette when it was fashionable in the 70's!

Chipandspuds · 20/04/2014 19:31

DM has very good skin, she rarely drinks alcohol, but she was a heavy smoker for 20 years and loved sunbathing! She has a strict regime on moisturising and swears by Olay!

MrsSteptoe · 20/04/2014 19:34

DH and I are teetotal, and look very young. But neither of us smokes, and I think we also have fortunate genes. One thing that people often comment on is that I have very clear eyes, and I think that helps with the appearance of youthfulness (and is a direct consequence of not having drunk since my very early 20s, when I gave it up as a bad job!).

wolfofwestfieled · 20/04/2014 19:35

I gave up drinking at NY, do look better - skin glows now, but I don't think my wrinkles look any better.

I know a few teetotallers (who just never liked it - no drink issues in their past) and I'd say they all actually look older than their age.

One is a 38 year old personal trainer, v fit, does loads of exercise but looks a good few years older than his age. I'd say from looking at him it's sun damage - he has quite 'irish' looking skin, which prob doesn't help.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/04/2014 21:03

I'm teetotal, drank in moderation (honestly, very little) until I was 30 then quit. I do look younger but suspect genes play a big part. I don't smoke which I think plays a bigger part.

HazleNutt · 20/04/2014 21:31

I didn't drink for a month and was already looking miles better. Too bad I really love wine. Will try to cut down though, quite liked the glow as well.

Have a teetotal friend, she's 45 looking like 25, seriously. But I think it's mostly due to the fact that she never sunbathes.

mumofthemonsters808 · 20/04/2014 21:35

Not in my case, I'm teetotal and just look my age.
