Just that really. I notice myself looking quite tired lately. Just having the odd glass is difficult really. I always want another! I am thinking of becoming teatotal.

Realised how unhelpful that answer was. Grin

Try it for a month and see if you see any difference. Bet you'll feel better at least.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 20/04/2014 15:18

My female in laws are all teetotal (Muslim). They have lovely skin and look youthful but then they are not white so less likely to get wrinkles or dry skin anyway.
The Others I know are both previous 'problem drinkers' so no. I mean they don't look any different than people who drink.

MarchOnToApril · 20/04/2014 15:27

I don't drink at all, my skin is good. The teenage shop assistant in New Look last week didn't believe my age... Make of that what you will!
It's cheaper not drinking and I never get that grey, sallow complexion that comes after a heavy night.

VarsityQueen · 20/04/2014 15:28

I don't drink but I don't think I look any younger than my friends of the same age (38). Maybe in time it will tell more. I think smoking and sun exposure shows more in the long run, along with not cleansing/moisturising properly. The first two give you more wrinkles and dullness, a bad or non existent cleansing regime also gives you dullness and also an 'orange peel' look to the face as you reach your 40s.

squoosh · 20/04/2014 15:31

I'm frequently asked for ID and in my late 30's. I get asked for ID when buying alcohol which I then consume.

My Mum drinks moderately, her sister not at all. They look the same.

Obviously if you drink heavily this will take its toll on your looks.

squoosh · 20/04/2014 15:32

Smoking and the sun are the biggies I think.

GrassIsSinging · 20/04/2014 15:38

I notice with myself that if I drink for a couple of days in a row, my skin is worse. If I go a week without wine, skin improves.

I might give up drinking for a month (after this weekend! Grin) and see how I feel.

Jux · 20/04/2014 15:54

My brother was teetotal from the age of 17. He looked younger than his years, but that was mainly down to good genes as I did too, and I wasn't teetotal (am now). He died at the age of 49 though.

CouldntGiveAMonkeysToss · 20/04/2014 16:08

I'm teetotal and look shit. I don't have wrinkles because I'm only 26 but I do have dark circles around my eyes (inherited from my mother) and I still get spots. I don't think it makes a huge difference.

storynanny2 · 20/04/2014 16:16

I have been teetotal since 20 due to severe migraine trigger, I am now 57. I dont miss it, I have fun and a youthful outlook and if I dare say it, look a lot younger than my younger siblings who have been regular drinkers all their lives. I do not ever make any comments about drinkers as it is there choice, but have been fed up over the years about comments such as "dont be boring, go on have a drink"

Legologgo · 20/04/2014 16:48

lol at teatotal

First photo - bad hair, no makeup, harsh light, miserable expression

Last photo - good hair, makeup, soft lighting, much more flattering camera angle

Good for her, but those photos don't really prove anything except people look better in photos when they're wearing makeup and have the camera elevated rather than face on.

TulipOHare · 20/04/2014 17:41

I don't drink and I probably look slightly younger than I am, I think. I am 35 but could probably pass for late twenties / thirtyish. Hope so anyway. But I would not say I look glowing or anything, I have (hereditary) dark circles that look worse if I am low on iron, and a naturally pale / sallow skintone.

I do have good skin, it is very soft and smooth. I put that down to genes and the fact that I have been diligently cleansing and moisturising using oils and hot cloths since I was 20ish. Also consume lots of olive oil, avocado oil, oily fish etc. I drink lots of water and have since my teens.

On the downside, I smoked for years (not any more) and have a bit of a sugar habit Blush which I really really need to knock on the head.

Greengardenpixie · 20/04/2014 18:01

I dont really drink alcohol as i simply dont like it. The only thing i have is a shandy really. I was told just the other week i looked 10 years younger than my age. People are visibly shocked when i say i have 27 year old children and sometimes i dont even say as it means going through my life story with them. I dont especially have good skin tbh..i have combination skin that does break out. I think its more to do with genes. None of my family look their age. Mind you, they are not drinkers either!!

Greengardenpixie · 20/04/2014 18:01

Oh, im 46 btw.

ZingHasAHotCrossBunInTheOven · 20/04/2014 18:21

I don't drink, don't smoke and don't use make-up.

I look younger than I am (so I'm told).

when I was 27 a shop assisant asked for my ID card when I wanted to buy a bottle of Bailey's (on way to party) and ever since people misjudge me for someone 5-10 years younger.

I don't know if I just have "lucky skin" or a baby face or what.
I don't eat healthily, nor do excercise.

ZingHasAHotCrossBunInTheOven · 20/04/2014 18:21

(and I think it's teetotalWink )

Suzannewithaplan · 20/04/2014 18:24

Alcohol is harmful to all bodily tissues, if you drink it regularly you are bound to age more quickly than if you didn't drink.

There may well be a level of alcohol consumption that doesn't cause any damage but it will probably vary from person to person.

Twobusyboys · 20/04/2014 18:29

Haha. Well i have certainly learnt something new. I genuinely thought it was tea total. Cos you drank tea instead of alcohol!!

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 20/04/2014 18:29

Other drinks are permitted but tea is the best Grin

MrsBungle · 20/04/2014 18:34

My aunty is is nearly 60 and hasn't drank since she was 21. She's never smoked either and she looks every year and more of her age!

My dh has skways drank quite a lot and everyone skways thinks he's at least 10 years younger than he is.

UniS · 20/04/2014 18:34

most of the teetotalers I know used to be verging on alcoholic if not tipped over the fine line. The others are ladies in their 80s. None of them look youthful and vibrant.

ZingHasAHotCrossBunInTheOven · 20/04/2014 18:37

Twobusy

I like the logic!Grin
but I drink coffee and hot choc too, not just tea!

Brew anyone?

santamarianovella · 20/04/2014 18:57

I know lots, yes they look extremely young for their age,but they were never big drinkers ever, and never smoked, and the took good care of themselves.

Alcohol really damages you from the inside out,
