Disagreeing with your teens outfit choices?

So DD2 (16) has a party on friday and has just revealed the outfit she is planning on wearing along with far too much flesh. It is a dress she picked up in town today and although it's made slightly better by the fact she's teaming it with a pair of printed tights and flats I still couldn't help but grimace Grin. She then went on to rant at me about 'being old enough to get married, move out, have sex etc.' and although I know I can't stop her wearing it now she is older I'm still entitled to an opinion! So just wondering, how old were your DD's when you faced the reality you can't stop them wearing what they want??

I never comment on DDs outfits which range between old tracky bottoms and baggy sweatshirt to similar to what your DD is planning to wear. If she feels comfortable in it, then that's fine - if you can't wear a short skirt when you are a teen, when can you?!

Oh I'm dreading this, DD is only 5 but time flies Smile

Although looking on the bright side ( I think) at least she showed you, I used to just get changed after I'd left the house at that age - and wore less than that dress Smile

Ha she knows if she hadn't showed me I would have seen it plastered all over facebook on saturday anyway!

Hmm, I'm not sure DD would wear that, but she isn't 15 yet and although she wears bodycon and cropped tops and belts miniskirts, I don't think she would feel she had the confidence to carry that off.

I think I still stand by what I said - at 16 she is old enough to make her own decisions about clothing.

Oh that's a classic 'if you think you're going out wearing that...........' type dress! The tights and flats will keep it toned down a bit. Bare legs and stripper heels and it would be a very different outfit!

A comment I would actually swallow if dd wore it. I'd have to take issue with it if she wanted to wear nothing but high heels with it.

Im going through this with my dds2&3 15 and 17. I have always been pretty laid back about what my dcs wear, I was the 13 year old still in a vest and sensible shoes but I cant help my initial facial reaction when they are wearing something that looks bloody awlful, they pick up on it straight away and go into screaming paddys saying I think they look fat, ugly, too old, too young ect, and I havent said a word !

I always go for the immediate 'doesn't your hair/make up look lovely' before coming in with the 'not sure about the hooker heels'

Compliment first, 'what a fucking state you look' second.

My Dds are not that age yet but I wore worse than that at that age. I think it's great she showed you first and you should be pleased with that.

I'd say something like 'that's a bit more revealing than I'd like but thanks for showing it to me, you look beautiful' or something.

Most of all I think it's great that at 16 she is confident enough in herself to wear it. You must have done a pretty good job so far to have her turn out like that!

The dress isn't as revealing as it first seems. The lace sections are solid material, not transparent. It will look okay with flat shoes and tights. If she is going to a club or something it will just look normal.

Oh right, it looks totally transparent and cut to the sternum in that picture.

I think it is cut down the sternum, but if you look at the back view the lace areas are over solid white fabric.

To be fair, I did go out in a nightie at that age. There was a whole fashion for going out in those tactel slips from M&S.

No the lace is completely transparent! If you read the reviews on it someone actually did compare it to a nightie as well, I just worry about her having a bit of a mishap as she is erm rather well endowed and she can't even wear a stick on bra with it Hmm. I did actually swallow my comments when she showed me and kept quiet but will make sure to compliment her on friday as she is going to the hairdressers beforehand anyway!

Agree it is good she shows you. I would go out in a polo and maxi skirt over a corset, belt-skirt and stripper boots.

Not much you can do, she'll grow out of it.

Could you suggest she takes some kind of cardigan in case she gets cold? That way, if she has any kind of mishap or everyone starts asking why she is out in her nightie, she can just button up the cardi (obviously don't say that!)

She has a cardigan she is wearing with it anyway as she has broken out in spots all over her back poor lass, and I doubt any friends will say anything, just me being a worrier, is there ever an age they get too when we stop worrying??

Back spots are a pain. It might be down to her hair conditioner, that's often the culprit. Tell her to try to avoid letting her conditioned hair lying on her back when she's in the shower if she can avoid it.

She stopped conditioning her hair years ago as it has always made it greasy for some reason and even though it's thick she manages without, have changed washing detergent, doesn't trap wet hair between bath robe and back etc. but nothing seems to help, her elder sister was exactly the same unfortunately. I just feel sorry for her as she has never really suffered from spots, even on her face, and she is wearing a backless dress for prom Sad. Can anyone recommend a specific product as have tried a few face products but nothing seems to be working!

Could you take her out on saturday to buy a solid but nice bra that she could wear under it and not be ashamed to show off, if the lace is that see through.

It's more the shape of the front of the dress that is the problem as the strip across is at an awkward height and very thin, and the party is friday so no problems there, I think she is just going to use a load of boob tape!

Hi. I think back acne is all about hormones. I recommend you encourage her to visit the doctors. There is a gel (called Duac) that is very good and will make a huge difference.

Dreading this and my dd is only a baby. I never listened to my mum but my dad could shame me into changing.

I would not be particularly happy with that but like almondcakes I was as teen when the underwear as going out clothes first came round and had the tactel m&s slips, to look really stylish you had to layer a black one over a white one. I had forgotten all about that till now!!
