Le Pilage bags...tell me what you think

Have been lurking on the MNV thread where there was mention of the above. Didn't like to interrupt them, but I think it might just be the answer to my problem of trying to find a smart bag I can hoik up on my shoulder during holidays. I need something not too heavy which is big enough to fit a bottle of water, guidebook a fold up waterproof, not rucksack -ish though. Leather handles are a must. Before I splash out please tell me your experiences or suggestions for alternatives.

I have one. It is an excellent holiday bag - it is rubberised inside so water/sun cream spills aren't a problem and it is v lightweight so you can fill it up without it getting too heavy. Bit ubiquitous but they are great so I understand why - highly recommend.

Blondieminx · 10/04/2014 19:56

I love mine. Want another in the really huge size too Grin

KosherBacon · 10/04/2014 19:58

I love the leather ones but a bit indifferent to the canvas.

Absy · 10/04/2014 19:59

I have one and love it. You can shove so much stuff in it without realising. The only issue is that as it doesn't really have compartments (it has a small one at the top), it is a NIGHTMARE to find stuff in it

Perplexing · 10/04/2014 19:59

I love them, I have three (bit addicted) in navy, taupe and orange. They are v practical (wipe clean) and versatile, can go from the beach to city shopping. Classic style IMO.

clippityclop · 10/04/2014 20:01

Thank you for your replies! Oh, didn't realise they were waterproof inside too, even better. Are the handles long enough to wear on the shoulder? And not sure what colour. Getting my colours done soon, from what I've read on HOC website I think I'm a soft summer so the dark navy might be too heavy looking?

Perplexing · 10/04/2014 20:03

They come with different sized handles, the longer length is perfect for going over the shoulder.

Decameron · 10/04/2014 20:09

I love the shoppers, light and you can carry loads. The only downside is, as Absy says, that there is only one small pocket but I put my DD's wipes, change of clothes etc in separate little zip pouches. I did the HOC a while ago, am a summer too. My last Pliage was navy, I bought the bilberry colour recently, not sure it is really a summer colour but it doesn't show the dirt!

CointreauVersial · 10/04/2014 20:09

I really want one!

Blondieminx · 10/04/2014 20:13

I use little cosmetic bags inside mine to stop small items getting lost. What they really need is a string/key fob thingy inside as well as the pocket!

fififolle · 10/04/2014 20:59

Right, I'm going to order one as my holiday bag. Do I get the small or large shoulder bag?

Pollywallywinkles · 10/04/2014 21:23

Large and make sure it has the long handles.

Stokey · 10/04/2014 21:31

I used mine for the first time today, very happy, except for lack of inside pockets.

I did see 3 on my commute home but all in different colours. I can already imagine buying more.

Perplexing · 10/04/2014 21:32

Agree with Polly the large long handled ones ages the most practical; but having said that I also like the smaller short handled ones for a 'dangling from your arm as you wander leisurely around' point of view, not v useful/ practical but they do look good.

clippityclop · 10/04/2014 22:09

Thank you ladies, I'm convinced - especially as nobody has suggested anything else. I'll go for navy with long leather handles. Too clumsy to pull off dangling Perplexing! Now, am I best buying from the brand website or elsewhere do you think?

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 10/04/2014 22:11

John Lewis sell them, but not all the colours.

trixymalixy · 10/04/2014 22:14

I would quite like one as they seem so practical yet stylish, but every man and his dog has one round here. Puts me right off.

FreeButtonBee · 10/04/2014 22:21

To be controversial. I have an anya hind march canvas tote which is awesome. It doesn't close at the top but it has a lovely embroidered design in the side. Have had it 4 years and machine washed it and it is still on good nick.

Also if you are concerned about the lack of pockets, get a VIP handbag organiser. I adore mine - the bigger sizes are better.

fififolle · 10/04/2014 22:40

Thank you Polly. I'm about order the large shoulder bag from the Selfridges site....just have to decide on colour.. but leaning towards taupe.

clippityclop · 10/04/2014 22:43

Freebutton, have just looked at the Anya Hindmarch website, wonderful but out of my league! I'll carry on searching, thank you all again!

Purpleshoes · 10/04/2014 23:22

I bought the large shopper, long handles in navy yesterday, haven't used yet but looks great. Got mine from selfridges website, next day delivery as want to take on holiday tomorrow. Think will be v useful as now past nappy bag stage but still need to carry toddler bits and my stuff around.

Bellebelle · 10/04/2014 23:25

If you go to the official website you can customise your bag and have it monogrammed if you like. Worth looking at even if just to play around with all the different colours Grin

VideoEtTaceo · 10/04/2014 23:54

I love them - just got the backpack for my holiday. Not sure I'll get as much use out of it as the shoulder bags, but the style of them all is so classic.

VideoEtTaceo · 10/04/2014 23:56

The bilberry colour is lovely btw, and I ordered from the website and it came quickly and well packaged. Postage was a tad steep though.

MincingOnBy · 11/04/2014 00:03

I have a large black one, very practical. I don't find they last that well though. I have already got a small hole in the corner and leather straps wearing.
