Slim/Straight Fit instead of skinnies?

MyFirstName · 21/03/2014 22:01

I have tried. Honestly I have. And skinnies are cool with boots.

But now. Boots are being put away for the spring/summer...converse/pumps are emerging again. And I just so, so do not have the figure for skinnies and no boots.

Am about 5'4 size 10-12. Broad shoulders, not much of a waist, slimmish thighs...all so good until we come to my calf muscles - which are there. Too much. And skinny ankle. So the silhouette just looks boak. . Just too much tight stuff over muscly calf (hidden/broken up perfectly with boots).

So just tried some slim fit jeans. Perfect. Far more comfortable for my calf region and I think looks sooo much better.

I am just beginning to take an interest in what I look like again after a few years of anxiety/depression. Do I have to persevere with the skinnies? Will I look frumpy/mumsy sticking with what I think looks best? I am somewhat out of touch - and a bit low on confidence....so gently thoughts please.

Welcome to the world of the slim leg. You're going to like it here! I love slim legs.

Gap do good ones - try 'real straight' and their legging jeans. I like them both.

As to trousers, m&S do a 'modern slim' which can be really nice, allthough you have to watch the fabrics as they can be very dodgy sometimes. The cottony ones tend to be good. I also really like some of the Mint Velvet slims. Gap do a slim leg trouser too which I have heard good things about but not tried, ditto White Company.

I am thinking you might look good in ankle skimmers too. Look for in Gap and Boden and the 7/8ths trousers in M£S too (though watch the fabric, again). Or you could just roll up the ones you have a bit.

Fairylea · 21/03/2014 22:10

I absolutely love my straight legs from sainsburys tu range. They are the only jeans that fit me and they are cut a little higher round the middle which is great for holding everything in.

BornToFolk · 21/03/2014 22:13

I was coming on to recommend Gap's Real Straight but see that LaTrucha got there first. I've been wearing them in the winter tucked into ankle boots, recently with my Converse and when it warms up a bit more, I'll roll them up and wear them with Toms.

I also really like Next Relaxed Skinny. They are really quite relaxed and feel very soft and comfortable with a good shape.

lennonj · 21/03/2014 22:18

I wear Gap real straight too. I'm skinny and when I try on skinny years they look ridiculous on my skinny, bandy legs! There's plenty of different styles of jeans and women look best in what suits them rather than what's in fashion (well as far as I'm concerned!)

MyFirstName · 21/03/2014 22:20

I have just bought these www.next.co.uk/g39106s2#899713g39 and I feel fab in them (compared to the winter in skinnies tbh). I also ordered a load of boyfriend jeans but they have all gone back as they were a bit too baggy. I have a paid of great boyfriends from Sainsburys - relaxed but not to wide and flappy. Am currently hitting the gym quite a bit at them moment so am hoping to be back to a proper 10 soon - so holding off on spending too much until I have got back to my normal weight.

Another vote here for Gap Real Straight - I can't do skinnies as my legs are too curvy, despite being a size 8 I can't get them up at all!!

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 21/03/2014 23:20

I got some 'relaxed fit' skinnies from NEXT this week... surprisingly decent and just that tad looser so don't give the 'stuffed sausage look' (I'm a 10-12)

Coumarin · 22/03/2014 03:43

What's the waist like on those Next ones Myfirstname ? Does it come up quite high or is it lower?

FrugalFashionista · 22/03/2014 07:31

OP it's always better to pick clothes that suit your figure! Right now you can pick just about any type of jean shape you like and everything will be trendy! (Exception - colored skinnies - they just look dated.)

Skinnies are no longer something you have to like! I started wearing straight legs last year - very flattering for my figure - and skinnies are now my 'frumpy' option (I wear them around the house with houseboots). I love the new jean silhouettes (I also wear boyfriends and 'mom jeans') and find them much more flattering and easier to wear!

KristinaM · 22/03/2014 07:43

I agree with everyone else - slim legs can be very flattering and I suspect that ultra tight skinnies might be on the way out

As you have good ankles, have you tried cropped trousers? They might disguise the contrast between you shapely calves and your slim ankles

Well done on the weight loss and the exercise regime BTW. I'm sure you know that the latter has been proved to help with anxiety and depression. Keep up the good work!!!

LordPalmerston · 22/03/2014 07:44

topshop baxter

AngelsWithSilverWings · 22/03/2014 08:19

I love Next slim straight jeans - I only wear skinnies with boots as they balance out my apple shape. When it's time to get the converse out I switch to slim straight to stop me looking so much like a triangle.

Was meant to be shopping for some more today ready for my holiday but just found out that the next sale starts this morning so I'll have no hope of finding them amongst all the rubbish and the hoards of bargain hunters Hmm

GeorginaWorsley · 22/03/2014 08:30

I totally agree with the wearing of skinnies with boots but slim fit in spring.
As has been said Tu at Sainsburys are excellent, plus I have some Marks slim fit that are nice and Boden straight legs.

AwkwardSquad · 22/03/2014 08:45

I wear relaxed fit skinnies or slim fit straight leg jeans, have done for ages. Much more flattering for my body shape. I currently have a couple of pairs from Whistles and I've had the real straight from Gap too. In fact, I think I'll get some more of the Gap ones this year.

MyFirstName · 22/03/2014 20:53

Coumarin they are middle -y Iyswim..don't know the right phrase..not low nor really high. Just about cover the muffin top but not fully up to waist

Coumarin · 22/03/2014 20:56

I know what you mean Myfirstname thanks. I'll give them a try I think.

Cocolepew · 22/03/2014 20:57

The relaxed skinnies from Next are great, I prefer to wear them rolled up a bit with no socks. Im a bit pudgy though Smile

GummiBear74 · 22/03/2014 20:59

Must be a body shape thing, OP, as I took those jeans back this morning. They looked really awful on me and I was gutted. I wanted an alternative to skinnies, as I really struggle with getting them on.

Medusa, do you have a link to those relaxed fit ones, please?

AnythingNotEverything · 22/03/2014 21:05

I started a similar thread recently and then tried next Relaxed Skinnies (great, but not in the right colours) and bought a pair of topshop baxter jeans. I've never owned a pair of topshop jeans but I love them!

You do have to hoist them over your thighs but once they're on, they're on, and I think they grow nicely rather than just bagging at the knees and bum (I'm looking at you, Gap legging Jeans).

GummiBear74 · 22/03/2014 21:09

Are these the relaxed ones people are talking about? Do you have to roll them up at the bottom like on all the pictures?

BornToFolk · 22/03/2014 21:18

Yeah, those are the ones I've got. I don't roll mine up, at least I haven't been while I've been wearing them with boots, I might when I wear them with Toms.

Olivermoliver · 22/03/2014 21:27

I bought these these week as I don't like skinnies with converse and they are just the job|www.next.co.uk/x532180s1#859514x53.
Still very slim fitting at the top but a bit more material around the ankle.

bialystockandbloom · 22/03/2014 21:31

OP I am just about your body double Smile I have the most ridiculously skinny ankles and ridiculously muscly calves. Summer is fine as cropped jeans look good, but hate skinnies in spring for this reason, my legs look like an upside down carrot. And also think most Slim fit look really mumsy on me, and are never skinny enough on the thigh.

I have discovered Lee Jade skinny tube - really nice skinny fit all the way till calf, then straight. Best ever - seriously recommend them.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 23/03/2014 00:46

www.next.co.uk/shop/gender-women-category-jeans/fit-relaxedskinny

I bought a second pair today :) They are just that bit straighter than skinny skinnys! Also the normal skinnys are very tight in a 10 on me.. these fit more like an 11.

I am currently wearing them with boots, but will be going into loafers (skechers go walk actually which are THE most comfy shoes ever) for spring and summer. The look nice rolled or full length.

I'm feeling quite pleased with NEXT today... had a refund card and a gift card from xmas and got the relaxed skinnys, a jumper and along sleeved t shirt.... and paid only £6 on top of the cards !!

Most of the shop was crap tho....

sotiredfornow · 23/03/2014 06:46

The next skinny we're awful on me. I did try on their Lift & Shape Slim which are a straight leg jean and they were pretty nice although £45.

Bialy - where did you buy your Lee jeans? They have them at John Lewis for £85 but wondered if you found them cheaper. Are they true to size?
