Feeling guilty.. Tipped hairdresser only £5

RMPM · 04/02/2014 22:31

Having highlights, cut and blow dry is a costly business. Had above today at a discounted cost of £107 ( normally it costs £140). I didn't pay usual £10 tip but only £5. Is that really mean?! Feeling guilty...

Do most people tip and is it still 10%?

Your views would be welcome, thank you

My bill is normally around £150, I tip £10. With the type of charges that we pay I don't think we should feel guilty.

Leedscatgirl · 04/02/2014 22:38

I often wonder this
Is 10 percent ok?

hettie · 04/02/2014 22:39

I don't tip at all (shrugs). Charges should be up front imho

gallicgirl · 04/02/2014 22:40

Sheesh. I don't always tip. Depends if I have change.

WashingWashingWashing · 04/02/2014 22:40

I never tip! Pay 50 every 3 weeks for retouch to roots and teeny tiny amount trim then blow dried. She earns more than me per hr!

IsItMeOr · 04/02/2014 22:41

Blimey, I don't tip at all. My cut and dry is about £60, and I think that's plenty to cover less than an hour's work personally.

WashingWashingWashing · 04/02/2014 22:41

What's going on with my pound signs?!

snowmummy · 04/02/2014 22:42

I don't tip either. They charge enough.

flopsytherabbit · 04/02/2014 22:42

I don't tip as I have the senior stylist / owner. I've never been made to feel uncomfortable with that and believe that is normal.

My DD (12) gives her hairdresser £2 for a £15 cut and blow dry.

Smartiepants79 · 04/02/2014 22:43

I've never tipped a hairdresser in my life. I pay her £40 odd quid for less than 40 minutes work. I don't think that's a bad wage.
The only people I ever tip are in restaurants.

Scarletohello · 04/02/2014 22:43

I never know whether to tip or not

< so generally don't...>

CockBollocks · 04/02/2014 22:43

I don't tip.

gamerchick · 04/02/2014 22:45

Mine is 15 quid and I always round it up to 20.

My hairdresser is amazing.. I'm not telling her she could be making silly money Hmm

magentastardust · 04/02/2014 22:47

I have always tipped -not loads £5 on a £45/50 bill. Speaking about it with a bunch of friends recently and they all looked at me as if I was mad and none of them tip their hairdressers. I felt a bit silly after -so should we be tipping yay or nay?

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 04/02/2014 22:49

I usually tip £5 for cut, £10 for highlights and £2 to the junior for hair washing. Bit more if I am particularly thrilled and have swooshy hair.

That said I don't think you should feel obliged to tip at all. Don't feel guilty OP, bet they were pleased to get a tip rather than upset you didn't give more!

MyArseIsbiggerThanYours · 04/02/2014 22:52

I never give a tip. At least I'm consistent ly tight .

BrianTheMole · 04/02/2014 22:57

Blimey, why do you need to tip at those prices?

RMPM · 04/02/2014 23:09

Thank you all. Feeling less guilty:))
If it didn't cost so much in the first place I would be happy to tip a bit more but need to keep costs down!

Gamerchick, I need to visit your hairdresser:))

£160 for a trip to the hairdresser Shock
I never tip except at Christmas. I gave my hairdresser £10 and she was very happy and surprised.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 04/02/2014 23:27

£150 for highlights??? Where are you?
I pay £35 (though hairdresser comes to the house).

I never tip anyone. I take my nail and wax salon a Christmas box of choccies, wine and mince pies and I take my hairdresser a bottle of Tia Maria at christmas because its her favourite. Other than that nothing. I've just paid my salon over £1000 they do alright out of me as it is!

StopSquabbling · 04/02/2014 23:39

I tip £10 at the hairdresser's, and like someone up thread, my bill is a whopping £150.

I am too chicken not to tip. I don't think it's particularly warranted at the hairdresser's as they charge so much. But mine does this kissy by the door thing, so I can't not tip!
