Feeling guilty.. Tipped hairdresser only £5

RMPM · 04/02/2014 22:31

Having highlights, cut and blow dry is a costly business. Had above today at a discounted cost of £107 ( normally it costs £140). I didn't pay usual £10 tip but only £5. Is that really mean?! Feeling guilty...

Do most people tip and is it still 10%?

Your views would be welcome, thank you

I'd just like to point out that in most salons, unless the stylist is independent and renting a chair, they don't even see 10% of the price you get charged.
As for the "less than an hours work" it's really hard work being a hairdresser, most days we don't get a break, we stand all day and have to run to a very tight schedule.

I totally get that prices are extortionate and I now do my hair at home myself, but some people live on their tips. I certainly used to.

But no, OP I would never have thought you right for tippig a fiver, that's quite generous.

RMPM · 04/02/2014 23:44

Ridiculous London prices! With treatments I have ended up paying £170.

LEM thanks for info.. May give it a go and then definitely feel like a millionaire with much more money in the pocket!

X

I usually tip £3 on a £35 haircut but I'm beginning to wonder if I should bother - they get enough don't they??

cafecito · 05/02/2014 03:08

if you pay by card less tip -related guiltage surely?

I don't tip, ever, and I don't really care. A price is a price normally overpriced in London and I pay that

plentyofsoap · 05/02/2014 03:09

I don't tip.

BigWellyLittleWelly · 05/02/2014 03:15

I only tip my hairdresser cash at Christmas, and I'll put £5 in the junior's meal out tin then as well. I like my stylist, and a couple of others can stand in for her well but there is also one who butchered my hair once ans I don't want there to ever be any possibility she'd get divvied up tip money from me!

NaffOrf · 05/02/2014 03:23

I never tip a hairdresser. I don't come from the tipping classes.

buttercrumble · 05/02/2014 03:56

I never tip those days are long gone, I don't get tipped at my work .

CrispyCrochet · 05/02/2014 04:08

Completely agree with TessTackle! I was going to write the same thing! I used to work reception at a local salon & the girls got paid an hourly rate plus 10% commission. Most of them were on minimum wage - even the top top stylists (so charging over £100 for highlights & cut & dry) were only on £8 & probably average about £18k a year. So not rich by any means. If they are the owner of the salon it isn't like £170 is pure profit anyway so kind if a daft comment as they have the cost of products plus overheads.

If someone is working for themselves & coming to your house I would say over £100 is a lot! Anyway back to the original question of tipping -

IMO £5 is generous. £10 is exceptional. Although if you normally tip £10 she probably did notice but I wouldn't worry about it!

SinglePringle · 05/02/2014 05:45

I don't tip because my hairdresser is a mate of mine who won't let me. He pushes it back in my hand but I offer a tenner on a £100 cut and full head tint. He's an independent who rents a chair.

In the highly unusual circumstances when I've had to go to someone else (happened three times in 15 years), I always tip £10 & £4 to the junior who takes my colour off.

Snowdown · 05/02/2014 06:16

I tip randomly, at Christmas and every now and again. I do think £60 for 30mins is plenty. If the hairdressers aren't paid enough then I think the owner is taking the piss.

EirikurNoromaour · 05/02/2014 06:25

I don't tip hairdressers. Mine is self employed and has a stake in the salon so not working for minimum wage (unless he has a quiet day, in which case [shrug])
It's skilled work but we pay well for it. Tipping is very much optional.

PrimalLass · 05/02/2014 07:31

I don't tip mine at all. I pay the salon approx £60/hour as it is. I imagine that as one of the owners she earns far more than I do.

dexter73 · 05/02/2014 07:50

I never tip either.

My dd earns minimum wage at a Pharmacy. Should she be expecting a tip when she sells someone some aspirin? She is also on her feet all day and works very hard too.

Bunbaker · 05/02/2014 07:59

"Just to let you in on a secret "nice n easy" by loreal is on offer at the moment £10 for two."

I can't see well enough without my glasses to do it myself, and I couldn't make a decent job of it anyway when I did used to do it.

PastaandCheese · 05/02/2014 08:34

I don't tip my hairdresser.

I tip the hairdresser who trims my toddler's hair as she puts up with a lot that doesn't come with cutting an adult's hair and the rate is much lower.

CrispyCrochet · 05/02/2014 08:40

I do agree with Dexter actually. Who decided what professions would get tips.

Hijacking this thread a bit - does anyone tip taxi drivers in the UK? In America I think that is more common place.

itsbetterthanabox · 05/02/2014 08:56

I've never tipped a hairdresser. I didn't know this was a thing. Their prices are usually sky high anyway.

itsbetterthanabox · 05/02/2014 09:00

Although I do know that a hairdresser friend who works in supercuts the big chain was on less than minimum wage! I think that is an anomaly though and minimum wage needs enforcing!
Supercuts is so cheap I think most people who go there (including me as a student) can't afford more than just the cut. Adding tip would be out of budget.

CatAmongThePigeons · 05/02/2014 09:03

I'll tip if they do a great job, if they don't, I don't tip.

I always tip cabbies here, as the daughter of an ex cabbie I know how little money is brought home and any extra has always been gratefully received.

Foxred10 · 05/02/2014 09:05

I never tip my hairdresser. She's self employed (rents a chair) and my hair costs £120 (cut & colour) which works out about £60 per hour.

I always reckon that tips are for services where there are low wages and tips top them up (bell boy, waiting staff, bar staff etc)
I don't tip my joiner or riding instructor either.....

PenguinsDontEatKale · 05/02/2014 09:20

I tip a fiver on a £30ish haircut.

mscnile · 05/02/2014 09:22

I tip every now and then, mostly because I rarely have cash on me. IF they've kept me waiting, or the person I'm paying for doesn't actually do much, I don't bother. When I take DTDs they are often lovely and ply them with hot chocolate and biscuits, so I do tip then.

GreenRedBlueYellowPurple · 05/02/2014 09:42

I don't think my hairdresser likes it when I tip her! So have stopped :-)
