What is the Official Position on tights/socks/popsocks with trouser suits?

I don't know what to do.

I usually wear a skirt to work with black tights (oop in the cold north). But for the days were? where? when I need to wear trousers, what is best?

Bare feet are out, I get little clammy feet, even in winter. Tights over trousers seem weird. Can't wear thick socks with nice heeled court shoes, so that leaves pop socks, either a black denier or nude coloured, then my DM told me that I'll look like a granny if I wear pop socks Sad

What's the correct thing to do?

Eastpoint, aren't those socks that you described? Most pop socks go right up the calf.

Pop socks - no, just no. Don't. They are the most hideous garments. In winter, wear ankle boots with trousers to work. Shoes and tights/pop socks with trousers look grannyish.

I used to work for quite a scary woman, years ago, early in my career. I stopped being scared of her in an instant when she crossed her legs once in a meeting and I spotted that she was wearing blue pop socks under a voluminous skirt! I thought, "someone as unstylish as this holds no fear for me".

Also, I once worked with a girl who thought that her ex boyfriend started going off her when he found her ironing a work shirt one morning in her underwear and pop socks. I can understand why, I'm afraid.

Pop socks are unattractive if the top can be seen but that won't be the case, will it?

BakerStreetSaxRift · 03/01/2014 22:41

See, there are a few occasions where I will need to wear trousers as I need to be able to pull a boiler suit thing over them, so the trousers need to be fairly slim leg, so ankle boots don't really fit under them, so it needs to be court shoes.

I think slim trousers with a nice heel looks nice and smart on people, if only I knew work out what to put on my feet! I swear most people I see have bare feet, but that can't be right because I can't do it and it's not fair

Some women at my work wear court shoes with socks. I'd wear boots instead I think, and generally do.

DrNick · 03/01/2014 22:46

a nude pop sock looks like a bare foot - what the deal

DrNick · 03/01/2014 22:46

the prob is that boots can be a bit mum booty

Baker Street, you can find ankle boots that fit under slim trousers. Suede is best. You can see how passionately I want to dissuade you from pop socks.

What's mum booty? I must know!

woozlebear · 03/01/2014 22:49

I'm deeply unstylish but I hold a deep loathing for popsocks. To the point where (combined with the dragging hems in rain reason) i have been wearing skirts to work for several years. But I hate them now too (feel really dowdy in them somehow- I don't dress them up enough I think) so v interested in the shoe and sock conundrum.

Ankle boots- what kind of ankle boots could be worn with suit trousers?

And what about spring? I can't happily frolick around wearing ballets with bare feet without blisters.

Gah

DrNick · 03/01/2014 22:50

i had some ace nexxt ones- looked high but werent with a zip up the back - HAD to be worn with trainer socks as are low and fitted to ankle - are last seasons though.

DrNick · 03/01/2014 22:52

nope - cant see them

this might work with a skinny trew

Post a picture of mum boots! My imagination is running riot.

BakerStreetSaxRift · 03/01/2014 23:00

See all the low-heeled ankle boots that all the trendy young twenty-somethings are wearing with skinny jeans and shorts etc, I think they are frumpy and mumsy booty-esque. I don't like them.

The trend has obviously passed me by.

Yes like Nick's second link.

I have a pair a bit like your first link but I think they come slightly less high up the ankle, which might rule out trainer socks. I might go dig them out.

then get the gap always skinny or whatever and roll them so just a flash of ankle shows

looks nice imho

DrNick · 03/01/2014 23:09

these but size way down

Mum boots (AKA office boots) are back?!

DrNick · 03/01/2014 23:13

er no - they were an EG given of mum boots
not all boots worn at work are mum boots

IMO

Financeprincess · 03/01/2014 23:14

Oh yes, I see exactly what you mean.

Financeprincess · 03/01/2014 23:16

Oh yeah, and Baker Street, I endorse the Gap skinny kecks. I've got 4 pairs. They work under knee length boots too.

DrNick · 03/01/2014 23:18

they are so flattering - but I am like a size two in them ( SLIGHT exagg)

DrNick · 03/01/2014 23:18

plus you can wear with a normal top - not all the baggy top half
