This isnt until March so got some time yet, but I am not very girly and look and feel uncomfortable in posh frocks and heels, fadfing about with bags and wraps and such like. Feel like Danny LA Rue but not as glamorous. Could I wear a tux without looking really butch?
Am 50, five foot 7, will be size 14 hopefully, short cropped hair.
I would like a longish frock coat type of jacket...am I nuts?

Sorry but I don't think so.

It would look very strange IMHO!

eddielizzard · 08/12/2013 22:24

YES! i think it's a great idea. i have bought a tuxedo type white shirt but still looking for a reasonably priced tuxedo.

the kooples do a nice one but they were so rude when i went in i won't spend my hard earned cash there!

eddielizzard · 08/12/2013 22:24

with some killer shoes i think you'd look fab.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 08/12/2013 22:25

Wear it old some blingy costume jewellery

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 08/12/2013 22:25

*it with

BunnyLebowski · 08/12/2013 22:26

If you go for a fabulously tailored suit then yes! It's an amazing look! With dark vampy lipstick!

An ill-fitting or baggy suit might carry the risk of looking like a fancy dress Charlie Chaplin.

Bigbrassband · 08/12/2013 22:27

Not a tux, too extreme, but a trouser suit could look nice!

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 22:29

A well-fitting tux looks fabulous on women. Go for it!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 08/12/2013 22:29

I think a tux would be harder to pull off than a frock.

I get the not wanting to faff, and I guess you're not keen on heels? I'm sure you could find something which was non girly.

WhoNickedMyName · 08/12/2013 22:31

I'm really sorry but I think the whole female tuxedo look only works if you're very tall, very slim and look very feminine.

DPotter · 08/12/2013 22:31

Go for the tux! as eddielizzard suggested with killer heels and a co-ordinating bow tie and bling - fantastic ! and warmer than the posh frock. I wore a tux several years ago when based in north of england and suffereing from the cold & damp. Moss bros (where I bought the jacket) were not phased all !

Financeprincess · 08/12/2013 22:38

I think it looks a bit laboured, even on supermodels. Sorry, OP!

dementedma · 08/12/2013 22:39

A mixed response... Grin
I am just so undecided but wouldn't be able to do killer heels to carry it off.
I am part of the team hosting the event so need to be on my feet and on the move most of the night. I HAVE to be comfortable but also formally dressed and don't want to look like a frumpy old biddy. I want to look confident and fierce lo!

Jumpsuit with flats then.

If you're organising, you have to have comfy shoes.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 08/12/2013 22:45

Ooh yes like the idea of the jumpsuit!

Eddie the staff in the Kooples concession in Selfridges are really sweet.

BunnyLebowski · 08/12/2013 22:47

Jumpsuit with flats!

Perfect Grin .

IThoughtThat · 08/12/2013 22:53

Google women in tux and you will see lots of women looking fab in tux's

I like this suit.

If you can't do heels then great make up or jewellery or a bit of cleavage would make the suit look more feminine (if that's your objective Smile )

I think you should go and try some on and see how they look. Take a camara and report back Grin

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 22:54

Jumpsuit is much better if you need flats, I do think a tux on women needs killer heels.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 08/12/2013 23:00

Also, if you're going around organising stuff, you'll be roasting in a jacket.

WhoNickedMyName · 08/12/2013 23:04

I've googled women in tux, and yes there are loads of women that look fab.

They are all size 6.

MrsLettuce · 08/12/2013 23:04

I fear you do need high heels to carry of the tux thing. Bet we could find you a fab jumpsuit that'd work with flats though. How much are you wanting to spend?

burnishedsilver · 08/12/2013 23:56

anything here?

ZeroSomeFestiveGameThingy · 09/12/2013 00:04

OP What's your budget?

I have the feeling you might be after something Margiela - ish rather than Phase 8 (sorry people...)

If you could go straight to Saint Laurent it would be easy.

Why not some cool cigarette trews in a luxury fabric and a plain vest and tux jacket. Zara for jacket. Saw today. Banana republic for trousers
