Enlighten me about the whole nude shoe thing

So....I an led to understand that I should no longer be wearing dark skirt, nude tights, dark shoes (as I will look (a) old or (b) deeply out of touch) and instead I should be wearing dark skirt, nude tights, nude shoes (a la Kate Middleton) so that I look (a) like I have the legs of a giraffe and (b) as though I am in touch with this decade and (c) not pushing retirement. Those with more sartorial style than me - Is this an accurate statement of the current state of the world?

Sounds about right...

Disclaimer - I wear trousers ALL the time - can't be arsed with shaving legs etc!

ProtectiveMother · 09/11/2013 23:16

Really??

noddyholder · 09/11/2013 23:23

No I hate them think v dated and mother of the bridey.

MotherBluestocking · 09/11/2013 23:28

No. Nude tights = work of devil.

GideonKipper · 09/11/2013 23:35

Dark skirt, dark tights, dark shoes. Smile.

mammadiggingdeep · 10/11/2013 00:08

Nude shoes in the summer with nice tanned pins....no nude tights. Ever.

Curioustiger · 10/11/2013 08:07

Technically I agree with everyone criticising nude tights. In practice though we live in Britain, come on, this is not some Mediterranean country where we can swan around half the year with bare legs! So I decree very light denier nude tights whisper even natural tan are fine. A light shoe looks better with nude tights (if you're light skinned) IMO. I do think that Kate Middleton esque nude shoes will date, but they are very handy ... I've got two pairs and they get a lot of wear.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/11/2013 11:10

I live in Scotland so get about two days a year that are warm enough for bare legs and then I'm probably at work where it wouldn't be appropriate anyway! nothing wrong with nice tights IMO although I prefer nice fishnets as they last longer and are less sweaty. I own nude shoes but tend to wear shoes that work with my outfit and often wear dark dress nudr fishnets dark shoes.

I'm younger than Kate BTW so hopefully not hideously out of date

noddyholder · 10/11/2013 13:33

I like nude tights just not the shoes which look like shop window mannequin

Alexa chung is featured in The Observer magazine "Why it works" feature today wearing apretty print dress with shirt style collar and cuffs together with fine black tights and elegant black shoes - hurrah, the hosiery and footwear of my choice is back in fashion.

Nude shoes are good in theory, but in practice too many of them look cheap and nasty. Particularly the clumsy style in too-pale faux patent leather, with or without platforms. Those hideous 'sledge' shoes beloved of the Middletons are expensive (LK Bennett) but still look wrong. A good nude shoe looks elegant, but they are difficult to find and tend to be expensive. I wouldn't wear them in winter.

higgle · 10/11/2013 15:59

Indeed, FP. I did try to buy some nude shoes and had a generous budget but I couldn't seem to find a pair that were the right colour and shape, they were all too beige or too pink or too matt or too shiney..........too difficult, too much effort.

louwn · 10/11/2013 16:29

Financeprincess....what?! Sledges are beautiful and not cheap looking at all. Have seen some nasty looking copies though.

LadyVetinari · 10/11/2013 16:53

I have a pair of nude courts by Autograph @ M&S which are lovely (no platform, nice almond toe, slim heel, and perfectly neutral rather than pinkish). They get worn with nude fishnet tights from April-September, and I get enough compliments to be fairly confident that they don't make me look dated or like a partially clad mannequin.

In winter, I like black patent Mary Janes or oxblood/burgundy classic courts with nice opaque tights, if I have to wear formal shoes.

Trills · 10/11/2013 17:00

It's November - are you not onto dark tights now?

MrsFogi · 11/11/2013 23:46

Thanks for all the posts. Clearly I am totally off-piste in the style stakes - I haven't worn dark tights for many moons. It sounds like I am due a trip to the dark tights section of M&S. Any views on what dernier I should be wearing etc etc. Clearly much assistance needed by this miner Confused.

My favourite tights right now are 40 denier navy. I think they make my legs look great and they imply just slightly more care than black. Opaque black ones are good for winter as are charcoal grey.

Based on a suggestion made on a thread I ventured into berry opaques for the first time this year but it's a step too far for me, on reflection... They may not come out of the wardrobe again.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 12/11/2013 06:49

I like nude courts, my pair get a lot of wear.

They're just the right shade, they're not platforms though they do have relatively high heels, and best of all, I got them for $40 from the No. 1 Shoe Warehouse. Which won't mean anything to you lot, but trust me, they're a find/bargain.

Anyway, I wear them with nude tights under cigarette trousers, and with nude fishnets under skirts. I can't wear shoes with a decent heel unless I have tights on, too.

I also wear black shoes, but my God, I am over black opaque tights. I think they look really dated, and can't remember the last time I wore them.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 12/11/2013 06:50

It's nearly summer where I am, so black opaques are out for that reason, anyway.

higgle · 12/11/2013 13:45

I have lots of navy tights too - very difficult in the mornings to be sure if you are wearing lack or navy if the light is not good! I'm finding nearly opaque looks better than full opaque at the moment, not sure why.

MrsFogi · 12/11/2013 19:52

So blue tights and grey tights are okay too? I had always assumed I would look odd with blue legs?

OP posts:
Curioustiger · 12/11/2013 20:41

Mine are almost blue black. They're lovely!

CointreauVersial · 13/11/2013 00:16

Black opaques are "out" ??!

WTF do I wear, then?
