Enlighten me about the whole nude shoe thing

MrsFogi · 09/11/2013 22:18

So....I an led to understand that I should no longer be wearing dark skirt, nude tights, dark shoes (as I will look (a) old or (b) deeply out of touch) and instead I should be wearing dark skirt, nude tights, nude shoes (a la Kate Middleton) so that I look (a) like I have the legs of a giraffe and (b) as though I am in touch with this decade and (c) not pushing retirement. Those with more sartorial style than me - Is this an accurate statement of the current state of the world?

Where do you get nude fishnets? They sound right up DD1's street.

Me, I wouldn't be caught dead in nude tights. I'm 45 and DM wore them.

Mummyoftheyear · 13/11/2013 05:15

No to nude tights except at interviews. But this stuff (put on with plastic disposable gloves and a fake tan mitt) is amazing:

I'm another one who wouldn't be caught dead in nude tights - they look really frumpy on me. I find tights in general pretty awkward to wear (gusset around knees, ladders, etc) but if I have to wear tights I wear black opaque with a black skirt and red shoes, so I don't look like I'm going to a funeral!

I usually get around the problem by wearing a long skirt with no tights, or leggings underneath if it's really cold.

ElizabethBathory · 13/11/2013 12:49

Nooo black tights, opaque or not, can't be out...whenever you see a fashion shoot or blog, or flick through Lookbook, if the person is in a skirt or dress she either has bare legs or black tights on.

Pufflemum · 13/11/2013 13:12

What colour shoes or boots do you wear with navy opaques? I like navy tights with a red wool dress but can never decide on the foot problem.

Curioustiger · 13/11/2013 15:24

I've got some blue and black flats, also some grey heels. I am on the lookout for navy shoes or ... Very tentatively as I am not a fashion dresser, really... Shoe boots.

With that outfit I would try to get some navy heels, it sounds great.

florencedombey · 13/11/2013 18:01

Curioustiger, where do you get your blue-black opaques from? I have just bought some beautiful midnight blue loafers from Hobbs and my navy tights aren't dark enough to match them grrrr.

Curioustiger · 13/11/2013 20:15

M&s. they do two types of navy tights. One is nicer in feel but a bit brighter. The blue black ones (which are just called navy) are the standard 40 denier ones. I can barely tell them apart from black in the morning!

BikeRunSki · 13/11/2013 20:19

Nude shoes look like prosthetic feet to me, especially wedges.

florencedombey · 13/11/2013 21:57

Thanks, CT, mine are M&S Autograph. Perhaps I should try the cheaper ones!

SpencerPercival · 13/11/2013 21:58

ooh they are NAFF

all the polyester suit types have them

Curioustiger · 13/11/2013 22:04

Yes! The autograph ones are the bright ones. You want the cheap ones!

MrsFogi · 15/11/2013 13:25

I second Pufflemum's query - what colour shoes does one wear with navy and blue-black opaques? I used to wear navy skirt, nude tights (clearly won't be doing that any more after this thread) and tan heels - I take it the tan heels will now look ridiculous but I also take it I can't wear black shoes with navy tights?

I had a pair of dark grey opaques that lolled ace. Almost dark indigo

noddyholder · 15/11/2013 16:56

No tights can redeem those shoes even laughing ones

Stokey · 15/11/2013 17:00

So what would you wear with a blue dress?

Had this dilemma the other day - brown/blue/black didn't work at all so ended up going with nude tights but orange shoes.

was maybe a little out there but the orange shoes are very pretty

noddyholder · 15/11/2013 17:00

Love orange with blue I like tights and shoes same colour sometimes.

Parttimelover · 15/11/2013 17:22

Grey tights! Nylony or cottony or woolly- all good. I don't think black opaques will ever really go out of fashion but I do get quite bored of wearing them so I wear grey tights a lot more these days and like them. Also I find grey allows the wearing of more colourful/summery/ bonkers shoes than you can get away with with black opaques in winter. Like leopard print ballet flats seem to work with grey but not with the plain back ones. Ditto cherry red patent brogues. Er and they make my black leather knee boots look totally daytime appropriate for work which helps when I need to look smart and be warm but can't wear wellies.

marceline · 15/11/2013 20:25

I have been reading this thread with great interest. I have worn my blue tights today for the first time ever (Sainsburys btw - they are lovely). I wore them with a denim skirt and tan boots. Does that sound ok or awful? Can't quite tell...It looked nice to me.

Also - I have a brown/green/orange dress which I wear with tan shoes. I don't really like nude tights - they don't do anything for my legs. But what do I wear with that dress? Dark brown tights maybe?

GrandstandingBlueTit · 16/11/2013 09:21

I have to admit, I would never wear nude rights for casual...

But I work in the civil service. Bare legs isn't an option, especially in winter. Black simply does not go with everything. And multi-colours aren't an option for this environment, either. So nudes, it is.

MillyRules · 16/11/2013 11:43

I think Nude Shoes are now out of fashion. Thought they were hideous anyway.

HappyGirlNow · 16/11/2013 12:03

Depends on the shoes! The colours, material and style... The ones the Middletons wear are horrible and old fashioned..

I've just bought these beauties and I love them..
