Coconut oil, what's it used for ?? hearing good things

Ok so I have been hearing great things about coconut oil, today at work (work in a quirky little deli/cafe only just started ) and a elderly came in and brought 10 jars of our coconut oil, overheard her saying she uses it for everything beauty/cooking etc and has done for years! She takes two teaspoons of it every morning and frankly for a lady in her 70's her skin was BLOODY AMAZING, so smooth and hardly any lines!

So I'm just interested in what you all use it for and what results your getting ?

Heard it's good for teeth pulling - it whitens your teeth. Going to get some to try next month when in UK.

Think I'm going to buy a pot at work on Monday, interested in finding more out about using it as a cleanser, I have quite dry skin

I used it as moisturiser all over my body when pregnant-not one stretch mark!

daftbesom · 25/10/2013 22:47

Hair conditioning.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 25/10/2013 22:50

It's fabulous stuff but you need the raw cold pressed stuff. It is great for brain health due to the composition of the fats it contains. Supposed to be very healing to the gut, but START SLOWLY, if you eat it by the spoon it can have very laxative effects, start with half a teaspoon and see how goes.

I cook with it, bake with it and even make coffee with it sometimes!

PinkFairyArmadillo · 25/10/2013 22:52

I use at as a hair conditioner and to minimise damage to my hair when I bleach it.

SinisterSal · 25/10/2013 22:58

heating it does not destroy the goodness, does it?

I know it does with some oils and fats

Mumof3girlys · 25/10/2013 22:58

Excellent everything we sell in the deli is organic expensive stuff, there is a huge fact sheet on it but just have not go round to reading yet (will do on my break) we sell a jar of it for £10 I'm 99% dire it's the raw pressed one your talking about can't wait to try it, hoping it's going to turn out to be my one product I can't live without

My local Tesco sells raw cold pressed organic coconut oil for £6 for about 300ml but I buy online too from real food source, they sell it at about £12 for a litre.

Cooking at high temps with it is ok. The oil is much more heat stable than most oils.

Raw, cold pressed is best because unlike many other kinds of oil extraction, no nasty chemicals are added, no high temps used (even with heat stable oils, the more often you heat them the more they degrade).

DesperateHousewife21 · 26/10/2013 21:10

I bought it off amazon for about £10 I use it for my hair. It can also be mixed with other things ie egg yolk to create a v good hair conditioning treatment.

valiumredhead · 31/10/2013 08:26

I use it for oil pulling, hair conditioner, moisturiser and rub it into my nails to make them grow.

ReallyGoodDrawer · 31/10/2013 08:32

I use it as a cleanser with castor oil. I use it on the dd's curly, prone to dryness, hair. It's very good as a lip balm too. I love coconut oil!

Sillysarah49 · 31/10/2013 08:44

I use it on my problem scalp psoriasis. Rub it in liberally at night, towel over pillow and wash in the morning. It loosens the flakes/scabs (yuk I know). Within a few days all gone.

Littleredsquirrel · 31/10/2013 08:48

I use it every night to take off my makeup and the residue then stays on my skin overnight. It is the best thing for taking off makeup I have ever found and you literally only need a fingernail scraping which then melts with the heat of your skin and so my £6 jar has lasted ages.

Dont leave it on your bedroom windowsill in the sun, it will be liquid before you know it!

GW297 · 31/10/2013 08:53

I use it in the bath.

LividofLondon · 31/10/2013 09:39

How much do you use in the bath GW297? I've just bought some and have no idea how much to use. So far I've only used it on my hands (which now smell of coconut!), but will give it a go on my face - after my date on Friday, just in case it gives me zits! - to see how it compares with apricot kernel oil.

GW297 · 31/10/2013 10:03

Not too much just about a spoonful. I have eczema and scalp psoriasis.

SeeYouNT · 31/10/2013 11:14

its amazing

i use it for loads of things. oil cleansing - where you use it as a cleanser by putting some on your face then wiping it off with a hot cloth, i use it as an overnight hair conditioner, i use it as a moisturiser (face and body) and i do oil pulling most days if i remember (swish it around in your mouth for 10 - 15 minutes then spit out) for whiter, cleaner teeth. i even use a little bit as a hair serum. i have also heard you can eat a spoonful of it as well for health benefits but TBH its so calorific i daren't Blush

but my skin, hair and teeth have been amazing since using it and i absolutely swear by it now

Hatice · 31/10/2013 12:16

Coconut oil is fantastic.

A couple of years ago my dd then 10 developed a sore red infection around her mouth after a cold and nothing seemed to help. Coconut oil eased the soreness and her skin healed. She is prone to this type of infection when she's under stress. She uses coconut oil now whenever the symptoms start to appear and it works every time.

I am hoping to make healthy chocolate coconut oil treats this weekend with this recipe

RaisingthedeadArizona · 31/10/2013 18:07

Another big fan here. I use it as a mouthwash - 20 mins each evening as I'm getting showered etc. My teeth have never looked whiter. As an all over body moisturiser and on my face at night. Also rubbed into finger and toe nails. As a hair mask. Once a week - wash my hair, apply melted oil to scalp and ends of hair. Cover with tin foil/plastic bag (glamourous or what) and leave for as long as I can be bothered. Shampoo off (twice) and condition as usual.

ihatethecold · 31/10/2013 18:20

Where do you all buy your coconut oil from?
Supermarket?
Amazon?
Health food shop?
Ethnic supermarket?
Thanks

SeeYouNT · 31/10/2013 19:29

i buy mine from holland and barrett, amazon or ebay

as others have said, only go for the pure organic stuff

BellaVita · 31/10/2013 19:44

I get mine from Holland and Barrett. £6 for a tub.

Mine is used for an extra conditioner on my hair and I use it in my mouth ie, oil pulling every morning.

DharmaBumpkin · 31/10/2013 19:54

Those of you who use it for your teeth, how exactly do you do that? I have some coconut oil for my hair and scalp but have never heard of using it for my teeth!

BellaVita · 31/10/2013 20:01

Put a spoonful in your mouth and swish/pull it round for 15/20 mins. Spit out into the bin, not down the sink or loo as it will solidify.
