Coconut oil, what's it used for ?? hearing good things

Ok so I have been hearing great things about coconut oil, today at work (work in a quirky little deli/cafe only just started ) and a elderly came in and brought 10 jars of our coconut oil, overheard her saying she uses it for everything beauty/cooking etc and has done for years! She takes two teaspoons of it every morning and frankly for a lady in her 70's her skin was BLOODY AMAZING, so smooth and hardly any lines!

So I'm just interested in what you all use it for and what results your getting ?

I buy raw cold pressed organic (several brands) and it always smells and tastes of coconut (yum), however I've had friends say it doesn't smell of anything!

Maybe it depends on whose nose is smelling it.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 07/11/2013 14:02

The cheap processed stuff is deodorised during the processing.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 08/11/2013 21:25

So I've been doing a little experiment of my own.

Despite using raw coconut oil for cooking, baking and as a skin moisturiser, I'd never tried oil pulling (and only heard the term quite recently).

I'm amazed, actually amazed, at how different my teeth look and feel after only 5 days and 7 goes at "pulling". The first couple of days I did it morning and night. After 2 days, and seeing the difference already, DH and ds3 both started. DS3 is getting the same very noticeable results as I am, DH slightly less so, but says his mouth feels cleaner (breath fresher in the morning).

The interesting thing about ds3, he's always had a bit of a green tinge to his teeth (despite a lot of dental advice re toothpastes and brushing), apparently particular bacteria that over grow in some people cause that? After two 20 min oil pulling sessions his teeth were white. He is very very happy with this and is doing it daily despite gagging on the oil initially... He also says he's going to make his own toothpaste with bicarbonate of soda, as this has sparked an interest in him!

Obviously, small study of 3, but worth a go (the whitening is great though I'm more interested in the antibacterial properties for gum health).

I bought a little bottle from a health/nutrition shop, mainly to use on my nails rather than to eat. But mine is a liquid, not a solid. Hmm

I'm going to see if it improves my flaky nails.

Beccadugs · 08/11/2013 22:09

I first heard about this a a dog food supplement Blush she loves it, and makes her coat nice a glossy, and improves her breath!

Love it for me now too.

ShinyBauble · 08/11/2013 22:12

I buy the cold pressed organic Ultiva stuff. I've tried half a dozen brands and this one is tastiest - which is important to me because I eat it straight from the tub! I have hashimotos thyroiditis, and three tbsp's of coconut oil a day helps rev up my metabolism.

I also use a cheaper brand for oil pulling first thing in the morning. My dentist says my gum 'pockets' are almost non existent now so it must be doing good things for me!

Mynewmoniker · 09/11/2013 19:42

got coconut oil from Sainsburys...in the cooking oil dept. £6. Already used a tiny bit for my dry scalp and frizzy hair. Working already. Now onto the pulling.

Littleredsquirrel · 09/11/2013 20:19

It definitely smells and tastes of coconut if its the real thing. Have discovered today it is wonderful for taking off face paint.

DearDinah · 09/11/2013 20:38

Can be used for...ahem...intimate romantical use! Lol

YoungJoseph · 09/11/2013 21:04

If you pull, when do you do it? Shortly before / after a brush or mid-point? Presumably not instead of a brush?

ShinyBauble · 09/11/2013 23:59

First thing in the morning Joseph then I rinse, then brush my teeth. I am starting to feel that the oil pulling is more effective (and gentle) than brushing.

YoungJoseph · 10/11/2013 08:30

Thanks Shiny, managed to Google the answer as well. I've ordered the coconut oil to come with my Tesco order, so long as it's not substituted I'll be pulling from Weds morning.

YouCanCallMeBetty · 10/11/2013 20:47

Has anyone had good results from oil pulling for 5 minutes, or does it have to be 20? Want to try I but no way do I have 20 minutes in the morning - 5 max while having a shower!

valiumredhead · 11/11/2013 17:37

I only do 10 mins max, more like 5.

TiredDog · 11/11/2013 17:47

10 mins here. I haven't got 20 mins when I can avoid talking, eating or drinking !

Doodlekitty · 11/11/2013 17:48

I used it on my nipples when breastfeeding, especially when my lo had thrush as I was told it was a natural remedy for that. Can't say if it worked as he had medicine as well but it was better than lasinoh in my opinion

RawCoconutMacaroon · 11/11/2013 20:36

I do 15-20 min, while in shower, getting dressed and drying hair. It has noticeably whitened my teeth in less than 2 weeks (whiter in a couple of days), breath fresh first thing in morning, so maybe a bit longer is good - at least to start with, I'm amazed because previously I'd use a home whitening kit every few weeks (but it irritated my gums), and it's better than that! I love my coffee strong so they would stain from that quite quickly after I'd used the kit.

Gingersnap88 · 12/11/2013 00:12

Couldn't see if anyone else has mentioned this but coconut oil is also a natural sun screen, I think it has an SPF of 8-10!

Love the stuff, going to try oil pulling Smile

Oh.. And it makes amazing popcorn!

Still pulling and have noticed a difference. Not going to use it as a leave in frizz stopper because, of course, it dried, went back to white and I had horrendous dandruff Blush

catellington · 15/11/2013 19:38

Also it's good for cradle cap. Rub on baby's head, leave for a few hours, then gently rub off with a warm wet flannel.

Don't do this if you have visitors coming to cuddle the new baby Smile

Mynewmoniker · 15/11/2013 21:32

Just wondering...did Dear Dinah who suggested it as a ahem...intimate romantical use end up with a snowy fanjo? Grin There's an idea for Christmas!

McFox · 15/11/2013 21:35

I'd forgotten about that fabulous use for it :)
