38 and not in the least bit famous. Can I wear a Fedora without looking like an arse?

I have been coveting a felt fedora for a while now. Worn casually with relaxed trousers, boots and a nice coat will make for a good winter look I reckon. I am having a crisis of confidence though Sad In my head my fedora looks super stylish a la Garance Dore (bottom right hand pic www.thesartorialist.com/photos/if-youre-thinking-about-garances-birthday) but in reality will I just look a bit of a tit?

Honest opinions please! Smile

Hmmmmm.
Probably not.
The danger of looking like a tosser in such a hat is just too great I feel.

letsgotostonehenge · 18/10/2013 20:00

no Grin

MsWinnieBaygo · 18/10/2013 20:05

Whilst I like the look on street style blogs it probably doesn't translate that well to reality unless you live in London or another major city and even then you'd probably still look like a bit of a dick. Sorry Grin

Fuckitthatlldo · 18/10/2013 20:07

Oh bugger Sad

Thank goodness for Mumsnet eh Grin

I fear so. I quite fancied a hat but just look like a bit of a wanker when I put it on.

tethersend · 18/10/2013 20:26

No, get one!

I love hats. I favour a 70s style wide brimmed floppy number, but any hat is better than no hat in my book.

Fuckitthatlldo · 18/10/2013 20:39

Funny you should say that Tethersend, a wide brimmed more floppy style would definitely have been my next choice (looks up hopefully through veil of disappointed tears emoticon...)

Hell yes you should do it, life is way to short to not wear a hat that you lust after.

mewkins · 18/10/2013 20:59

A friend of mine wears one in winter especially if raining. She doesn't get any funny looks and it suits her!

OPeaches · 18/10/2013 21:02

Do it!

Matsikula · 18/10/2013 21:14

Yes you can. People should wear more hats, I have about ten winter ones in various shapes (old mittel European lady is my favourite).

Fuckitthatlldo · 18/10/2013 21:26

Ooh ok, this is starting to look a bit more hopeful...

I've seen two I really like. One is a grey woollen Stetson. The other is a dark olive green felt with a brown leather band.

I just want to look as though it's me wearing the hat, rather than the hat wearing me IYSWIM. The look I'm going for is 'chic, nonchalant, and weather appropriate', as opposed to 'bit of a dick'. But I sense it could go either way Grin

I would do it if you want to. You'll only look silly if you look self conscious, so go,for it and wear it with pride.

I'm with gobblers. Life is too short to deprive yourself of such things.

cocoleBOO · 18/10/2013 21:39

Yes. I love hats.

chartreuse · 18/10/2013 21:45

Yes! I wear a lot of hats. Don't give a damn about whether other people like them or not.

GreenTeaDrinker · 18/10/2013 21:47

I never wear hats but am slightly envious of those with the confidence to carry them off - so yes, go for it!

domesticslattern · 18/10/2013 22:27

Heavens, who gives a toss what others think. If you like it, you'll carry it off beautifully.

UterusUterusGhali · 18/10/2013 22:37

Do it.

I always feel much more confident in a titfer.
Fake it 'till you make it.

Fuckitthatlldo · 18/10/2013 22:46

Thank you so much for all the replies! I really appreciate all of them.

I have to ask though... Uterus what is a titfer?

OP posts:
GobblersKnob · 19/10/2013 09:00

Titfer = titfertat = hat, cock-er-ney innit Grin

CatAmongThePigeons · 19/10/2013 09:03

Life is too short to not wear a hat! I used to nick my DHs to wear for special occasions. You've inspired me to find a hat that suits me and wear it with style Grin

hollyisalovelyname · 19/10/2013 09:04

Why not? You go girl

Whitecat · 19/10/2013 09:58

Wear one. They both sound great.
I wear a hat most of the time. Light long peaked or wide brimmed in the summer and more substantial felt type ones in the winter. You may feel a little self conscious to start but you'll soon feel it's truly part of your look.
If anyone notices your hat it will be because they have hat envy.

NigellasGuest · 19/10/2013 11:12

go for it! disparaging comments from family members especially DCs should be ignored.

BillyBanter · 19/10/2013 11:22

I used to wear hats quite a lot. I've got all sorts tucked away. I never seem to wear them now. My head gets too hot.

You do have to take care over what hats suit you, the same as with clothes.

The picture you link to isn't too out there. It will just be a case of how self-conscious you feel. It's the sort of thing where you will get looks but if the lookers are like me they are probably thinking 'good look. I wonder if I can get away with it'. I always admire people who wear a hat and look comfortable with it.
