38 and not in the least bit famous. Can I wear a Fedora without looking like an arse?

I have been coveting a felt fedora for a while now. Worn casually with relaxed trousers, boots and a nice coat will make for a good winter look I reckon. I am having a crisis of confidence though Sad In my head my fedora looks super stylish a la Garance Dore (bottom right hand pic www.thesartorialist.com/photos/if-youre-thinking-about-garances-birthday) but in reality will I just look a bit of a tit?

Honest opinions please! Smile

here's a fedora for you

Love the colour of that one Nigella

I quite like this one: www.hatsandcaps.co.uk/Brixton-Hats-Messer-Fedora-Black-P136003/

And this grey one: www.hatsandcaps.co.uk/Stetson-Hats-Teton-Virgin-Wool-Trilby-Hat-P149926/

And this olive coloured one: www.hatsandcaps.co.uk/cid/LPMUFZ8996KIO79PQR9H3EWRA9KPEVQR/Olney-Hats-Safari-Crushable-Fedora-Olive-Mix-P400002/

I've become more interested in the women in menswear look in general recently. Relaxed trousers, shirts, brogues, overcoats and hats are all starting to look very stylish and comfortable.

i love hats, didn't used to but now i find i like them as on damp days they keep my hair from going frizzy. mostly it's slouchy beanie type ones but i do have one like this from ebay, more of a cloche than fedora.

Flo56 · 19/10/2013 13:28

I think you should. What's the worst that can happen? So you might look an arse but equally, you might look fabulous. Clothes should be about expressing yourself, taking risks and having a laugh.

The only other thing I would say is that I think hats look best when they are part of an overall look such as an androgynous style but it sounds as if you are already thinking along those lines. (And yes I am well aware of the contradiction between saying you should wear what you want then trying to give style advice so ignore this too if you want!)

Fuckitthatlldo · 19/10/2013 14:38

Oh I bet that hat looks fab nipers - it's got a lovely vintage feel to it Smile

And yes Flo I agree. Definitely had a menswear thing going on in my head. After years of tottering around in heels, slim fit trousers and polo necks, I'm starting to admire a more relaxed, masculine look more and more. These women for example look really great I think. Although I'm hanging on to my long hair!

I like both of those. And yes, keep the hair - masculine clothes and long hair is a good look, I think.

SorrelForbes · 19/10/2013 20:29

Go for it! I love hats, cloche styles especially.

Ujjayi · 19/10/2013 20:56

What's the worst that can happen? Go for it. I'm 42 and decided a couple of years ago that life is way too short to constantly restrict your choices to the those that meet the approval of others. I live in a small-ish village but dress the same way as I did when I lived in London.

Enjoy your clothes and I wholeheartedly agree that you need to not be self-conscious. Any woman looking sheepish, apologetic or constantly fiddling with her clothes instantly outs herself as someone uncertain of themselves.

Ujjayi · 19/10/2013 20:59

Sorry, meant to say that looking self conscious is like an open invitation to ridicule to others who lack the style or desire to try something different themselves.

CursiveLetters · 20/10/2013 15:49

I got one from topshop, haven't been quite brave enough to wear it out yet! But agree with others that it feels approp in the rain to keep the rain off your face

Fuckitthatlldo · 20/10/2013 16:36

Go on Cursive! You wear yours, and I'll wear mine Smile

I have a couple of these, they are fantastic.

Fuckitthatlldo · 20/10/2013 18:11

I really like those Tethersend - the navy one in particular.
