I need some girlfriend help!

I'm not a girly girl and don't usually care how I look, but I'm going out on Saturday night and I want to look nice.

I've bought a strappy top and had my black trouser suit dry cleaned. I should look stunning but ...

  1. I have wonderful tide marks on my upper arms between the white and tan - won't go with the strappy top. So what do I do about that?

  2. Hair. It's about shoulder length now, all one length. It's years since I've had hair this long. It was dyed, and it is still slightly blonder (and out of conditions) at the ends. So do I wear it down or up?

  3. make up. Haven't worn it in years. So do I or don't I? And if yes - help!

  1. fake tan as Enid suggests

  2. def up - have a nose around online to get some ideas. Side parting can look v good if you normally have centre and vice versa. Or if (like me) you have a default Messy Bun, get something to put in it - flower, sparkly clip etc. Claires' good if on a budget, Accesorize good if not.

  3. yes makeup - even if it's only clear lip gloss;
but the 'something to even out skin / brown mascara / lip colour of some description' strategy is a very good one.
Doesn't need to be expensive either - Body Shop have quite non-scary colours and are normally happy for you to rout around in the Testers. And you can normally ask for samples so you don't need to buy a vat of the tinted moisturiser just for one night.

Thank you!

I am hopeless at this sort of thing (just rely on my natural beauty )

Do I only do the fake tan on the white bits, or do I do it all down my arms?

I will pass a Body Shop as I'm walking to the event. So maybe I could pop in and have a demo on the way ...

Am not an experienced fake tanner but sure one will be along in a minute - gut feeling is only do the white bits.
If 'permanent' fake tan is too scary you can get fake tan makeup (Rimmel Sun Shimmer Makeup for Legs or some such) that comes off with soap and water if you make a bish, and doesn't 'develop', so you can see immediately how brown it's made you. Looks like Marmite in the tube but does take the edge off pasty bits.

Popping into Body Shop for demo is not a bad idea but may be terrifying if you're not used to makeup. My staple line for demos like this is 'I just want to look less tired' - don't let them use anything coloured.

OK. Now I'm getting very stressed out about it.

I don't feel like I'm going to feel special or nice, I feel like I'm going to feel uncomfortable - like someone else.

I've also just found out that while my email to the organiser about accommodation was ignored, my friend's resulted in an offer of unlimited rooms, and she didn't pass it on to me. And it all has brough back to me about feeling crap and useless and that's why I'm thinking I'm going to feel really uncomfortable all poshed up, but equally I'd feel yucky if I went dressed normally.

Oh help, why do I get myself into such a state.

If you are going to get stressed about it - don't wear the strappy top - then you wont have to worry about fake tan. Use minimal make up but maybe put a couple of different shades of lippy in your bag as back up.

Fisil, don´t go feeling like somebody else, go feeling like you are looking at YOUR best. There is no shame in making the best of yourself!

Can´t help wondering why your friend didn´t offer you accommodation? Was it just an oversight?

Report
fisil · 28/06/2006 20:26

Rationally I know it was an oversight. But I just feel left out,and worried that I'm going to feel like that on the night.

I also feel pissed off because the whole thing is going to cost over £100 and I am not earning at the moment. I spent £40 on the strappy top because otherwise I only have jam encrusted T-shirts, so I just don't have anything else, and can't afford anything else. I have discovered that I can cancel my accommodation so long as I do it by tomorrow evening, and I'll only have to pay 10%. So I've emailed the organiser again to see if I can get the same offer of accommodation.

I just don't want all this. Only positive - it's reminding me of how happy I am now compared to how I was.

You are an angel. You are a true girlfriend!

Are you talking Friday, or do I have to start a campaign to get me out of visiting the in-laws during the day on Saturday?

Last year when I was feeling really shitty cos I was pg and off sick with depression and all the rest you invited me over and cheered me up.

And I've nicked many fags off you in the past!

I can remember all details of where you live except your house number. Should I email you for that, or is it safe enough to post it here?

Oh, I didn't know it was for me - I went and bought some in Boots this afternoon. And some mascarra. I felt so grown up.

Can I just say two things:

  1. COUNTESSDRACULA IS WONDERFUL AND I LOVE HER AND I WILL LOOK AND FEEL GORGEOUS ON SATURDAY NIGHT

  2. Since leaving CD's this afternoon, Ds2 periodically stops what he's doing, says "doggy" then looks to the sky and says "bye bye" and waves. Clearly he fell in love with CD's dog (who is about 3 times his size)
