My fringe will be the perfect length for the next half hour. Why did I do it?

Because I'm a fucking muppet, that's why. I go to the hairdressers and they trim my fringe for me. Sadly, they always cut it that bit too short so I either look like a 35yo trying to do novelty hair, or a dominatrix. Then, before I know it, it's too bloody long and I look like a bloody shaggy dog. I love my fringe when it's the right length, but sometimes I wish that I had just left it all one length.

Have you made Hairy mistakes? Aside from men that is...

VeeAndTea - thank you for your very timely reminder that I really should not have a fringe cut in to my hair. I have an appointment tomorrow morning and was considering a side-swept fringe but inevitably it will end up looking like Dave from Slade.........so I'll settle for long layers instead!

It's all the more frustrating because when it is the right length it looks great.

You can cut your own fringe to the exact length you want.

I normally do cut it myself, but I went to the hairdresser to get all the crappy dead ends cut off and she lopped off a cm too much on my fringe.

A few years ago I had The Worst Haircut Ever™, the fringe was too short and wonky. You'd think I would have learnt from that, wouldn't you?

Vee - I have hair like this at the moment (sadly I am 16 years older than Ms Olsen! ]] and I was thinking of going back to something like this .

Back in the 80's when it was all about Molly Ringwald I once had it cut into this style but the stylist cut the shortest fringe ever. Imagine all that heavy weight side lengths with a short stumpy inch long fringe!.....it has made me phobic of fringes ever since.

Ujjayi, both 'do's are lovely. And I remember the molly ringwald look. I usually ended up looking like Ally Sheedy

Thanks VeeAndTea. I think I will stick with the Olsen look mostly because I can just about get away with leaving my hair to dry naturally in this style, making more of an effort by blowdrying and using curling wand when the mood takes me. I am fairly lazy when it comes to my hair!

You see, I still kinda like the Ally Sheedy 'do. It has a certain french insouciance to it, no?

I would, I like low maintenance hair. And, yep to the Ally Sheedy looking quite cool. It worked in my teens, but now I'm in my thirties I would just look scruffy with it. I remember being desperate for this in my twenties, d'you think I could find a hairdresser who could get it right? could I buggery.

That's so funny! I remember taking that same photo into a salon in around '96 and eagerly awaiting my transformation from "Rachel" to "Natalie". The boyfriend of the time commented that the end result was "more mitten than kitten" Hmm Thankfully some blonde highlights applied a few weeks later rescued it.

I understand the perils of a fringe because my DD has one and despite my insistence she refuses to grow it out. The nearest we have got is a side fringe but it just sprung back into a full one. Her fringe is either like a sheep's or very high, it also grows like grass and we are at the hairdresser's every 3 weeks luckily she only charges a pound for it to be cut.

My fringe was cut yesterday and it's a bit too short. I know it will be fine in a week or so (it's really not that much short - a few mm) but oh it is upsetting me today :(

I look better and younger with a fringe (only got it done a few months ago and instantly loved it, as did everyone else) but I have a slghtly irrational fear that I look like Sunday Simmons's photo today.

I will probably hide my fringe under a hairband, bandana or hat for another week!

I love my fringe, and have had it for 46 whole years. It hides a multitude of wrinkles, and when it starts getting in my eyes I whip out my scissors and give it a sort-out. It makes my hairdresser grumpy, but tough titty.

Dry shampoo is a godsend for those limp and lifeless days.

I have a fringe because I can't afford botox... It looks lovely for 3 days then I have a delightful 90's 'curtains' style as I brush it out of my eyes!!!

Invest on some hairdressing scissors and master the art of the soft choppy fringe. ( I also needed to invest in some little clips to clip disaster fringe out the way the Irish few times I did it, but hey, if you cut it too short, it grows)

Chop up into it rather than across, you will soon be a fringe master!

Definitely recommend learning to cut it yourself. That way you can keep it the perfect length all the time. It really isn't difficult.

I cut my own daily I cannot find a hairdresser who can cut it how I like it. I look odd without a fringe now

Work from the centre then add in each side and match up. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

I'm a hairstylist so yes I would find it easy, but I've taught dp how to cut the back of my hair just by instruction. Saves me pounds as I can do all the rest.

Oh, I've got the chopping down now, tbh. It's when someone else touches it. They always cut it that bit too short. I like it just between my eyebrows and my eyelid.

My DH has threatened to tattoo my forehead with 'no thanks, I don't want my fringe trimmed' Grin

I had the same issue with a blunt fringe (it was getting wider and wider with every trim) so I grew it out into a side fringe.
However, on my last 3 trips to the hairdresser I've automatically agreed when they've asked to trim it- then spent weeks after moaning its too short! He's also asked if I need him to come with me to my appts so that he can save me from myself Grin

I was considering getting my hair cut at the local college and decided mostly against it due to the lack of free fringe trims. Am vaguely thiking of growing it out, but I have a v. high forehead and have never not had a fringe, so I am a bit scared of not having one.

I'm growing my fringe out but it looks crap at the moment - almost to my chin (the rest of my hair is long); it's always in my face. I used to cut the "side burns" and was told off by a hairdresser. Lawd knows why I did this.
