To gilet or not to gilet

Sorry!

But, its that time of year when my annual quest for a faux fur/shearling gilet begins.

It is greatly hampered by the fact I am 5ft and so can appear womble like if there is too much bulk and all the ones I like are £££

this is the type of thing I'd like but its too expensive.

So has anyone seen any recently that may fit the bill? thanks!

Here's Frankie in my gilet - may try it with a stripy top!

shopafrolic · 21/08/2013 14:04

I got this one last year in the Mint Velvet sale and wore it over a leather jacket when it got really cold - it's quite boxy and the fur is flat so worked for me....

They had loads of styles so would guess in a few weeks there'll be more in stock.....

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/08/2013 14:06

I like them over a jacket too!

Thanks for linking the muubaa one but too long for me.

Amber I remember you and blue getting the wendy one, back in the days before A&W went dark Wink

Nice jacket Po - and now you mention it, my driveway needs doing Wink

Carrie - that is gorgeous. I rather like the feathery ones, also quite like this but minus the belt.

Not sure about warm summer thang as I don't do colours - but I'm a pale blonde and would ideally like grey. I don't wear a great deal of black but actually black fur is ok on me - I guess due to texture/light reflecting ability [pretends to know what I'm talking about]

That's nice Shop - I did get a nice leather jacket in the sales from MV - its grey of course Wink

Will keep an eye on their new arrivals.

I loved the fur one Joseph did last year that looked like bird feathers. Was a bit £££ though even in the sale

FunnysInLaJardin · 21/08/2013 14:24

carrie that is lovely

I am feeling drawn to a gilet this Autumn. My job involves the outside. I have a furry one just like the Mint Velvet one linked to, bit I think it's a bit frivolous for my job.

But I am haunted by the image of THREE school mums who have an identical Joules one with a jolly spotty lining.

And it might stop my sons from wearing their gilets if I get one.

Jakadaal · 21/08/2013 19:50

I love all sorts of gilets - padded and faux fur Blush and yes I most probably do resemble a womble but I don't care!

Have you had a look at TK Maxx recently as I got one very similar to the Mint Velvet one in our local TKM last year

FranklymydearIdontgiveadamn · 21/08/2013 19:57

The only person I've ever seen suit one is Olivia Palermo

TheBeanAndTheBee · 21/08/2013 20:00

Mrs CB do you live in London? There are some fantastic wholesale type places on Bethnal Green Road. I got a gilet and 2 sheepskin coats from there. The coats were made to measure and cost around 350 each, the gilet I think was around 125/150. Costume Designer friend of mine sent me there. It's not a very chi-chi shopping experience but fantastic quality for the price. This was a few years ago though!

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/08/2013 20:03

Oh TheBean - that sounds amazing but I am in the south west.

And well, Olivia Palermo would look good in a bin bag but I've seen lots of women looking very glam in them.

The word 'gilet' is funny isn't it - I can hardly bear to say it aloud and it just looks wrong written down.

I quite fancy some grey fur this winter: I have both black and blonde. It's time to get me a silver fox. That Mango one looks perfect, MrsCB, if it came in grey. TopShop often do love faux fur. It's just such a hard thing to buy online, as some of it is dry, crackly and nasty. And some is divinely plush. Moore & Moore do beautiful faux fur but their stock looks odd, so far, this season.

InMyShreddies · 21/08/2013 23:17

Ooh yes love a fur gilet, much easier to wear than a fur coat but just as cosy and fuzzy.

I think this could be good if you're not averse to real fur, quite a slim fit. I saw loads last January in TK Maxx so might see what they've got this year.

kiwik · 22/08/2013 00:23

I bought a beautiful one in the US last winter - but it is real fur. Easy to throw on over a jumper on those days where you don't quite need a coat, but want something warm on.
It's this one: www.shopbop.com/fur-vest-one-by/vp/v=1/845524441957298.htm?extid=affprg-4441350

I'm still wearing it now, as the weather moves into Spring down here in the southern hemisphere.

FranklymydearIdontgiveadamn · 22/08/2013 22:58

Carrie74 that is fabulous! I think it takes them to be a bit longer to look good, the shorter ones seem to add bulk

Annianni · 29/08/2013 09:58

Mrscb there's a nice Michael Kors one on the outnet today.

shopafrolic · 30/08/2013 20:20

one for MrsCB

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 30/08/2013 21:13

What do you wear the furry ones with?

I'm more of a North Face girl but that looks cosy.

Phaedra11 · 17/09/2013 20:09

Like the OP , I have been dithering about whether to gilet or whether at 5ft 3, I will look like a womble (or Viking midget as I read on someone's blog).

Anyway I have finally taken the plunge, prompted by a Mint Velvet code and that it seems to be fast selling out and ordered <a class="break-all" href="//hwww.mintvelvet.co.uk/neutral-faux-fur-gilet//mint-v/fcp-product/3375" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this one. Will probably turn out to be big mistake, but hey that's what free returns (if you use collect+) are for.

Phaedra11 · 17/09/2013 20:10

Sorry, will try link again. www.mintvelvet.co.uk/neutral-faux-fur-giletmint-v/fcp-product/3375

Mumsnut · 17/09/2013 21:10

I've got that one, Phaedra. I look more Chewbacca than womble but I'm WARM.

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/09/2013 21:13

Only yesterday I bought an unreal fur one - tis very nice!
