curly hair hairdresser in London?

clarequilty · 23/07/2013 16:04

My favourite salon has closed (Cox McMillan in Battersea) and I desperately need a cut.

I follow the curly girl method and have botticelli/loose corkscrew curls with some waves. Fairly fine.

Any recommendations?

There's a name for my crazy hair, with the lazy curl on the crown and mad crazy bits round my face? Truly, Mumsnet is the place where all knowledge can be found. Corkicelli. I'm even contemplating asking Jay for a cut, currently a three month old Vidal Sassoon asymmetric wedge... Does she go sawf of the river?

libertychick · 14/05/2014 21:37

I don't know Tupper - sorry.

cathyandclaire · 14/05/2014 22:03

Thanks Liberty Curly Girl handbook ordered, DD will love it... and so much cheaper than a potentially traumatic $150 dollar trim at Devashan (?sp)

Specialbrew · 14/05/2014 22:20

I am South, she came to the dark side

Beautybymums · 20/05/2014 18:53

No problem Specialbrew. i am pleased for everyone. I just hope this is a permenent thing and a salon was open already with more hairdressers bothering to learn this method. Cuts should take an hour on us now seeing how it is done. NOT 15 min of hideous flat trim followed by an 1hr and half of styling to cover the mess up!

caromoca · 20/07/2014 14:28

Hi all,
I can't wait to have a hair cut w jay! I sent her a text to the number mentioned above and never got a reply!
Does anyone have any more information of what she is up to these days and what is the easiest way to contact her?
Thanks for the wonderful hair advice!

sparkay1 · 19/08/2014 23:26

I would also be interested in contacting Jay if anyone has heard from her/got a new number for her.

Bubbshjs · 20/08/2014 19:59

Ditto

Cococandi101 · 28/08/2014 17:42

Hello all... In desperate need of curly hair help! Anyone know hair salons or specialists in or around London?

FrancescaKSmith · 12/09/2014 21:41

Hi all,
SpecialBrew and libertychick I tried to contact Jay but was unable, do you know if she's using a different number at all?

I saw this post and wondered if it was about the same person. It might be worth getting in contact with her, Francesca.

ARGHtoAHHH · 05/10/2014 19:55

Hello, another curly girl in London. I had my hair cut about 2 months ago, she cut it too short and horrible layers. I hate it.

I want to sort it, but don't want to take any more length off it so I'm reluctant at the moment. Maybe in a couple of weeks.

So is the number for jay not working then?

Beautybymums · 08/10/2014 11:47

@urghtoahh its the same old story for all of I think. Sorry to hear about your layers. Its a shame when they say they know what they are doing but they dont.

I spoke with Jay recently to get my sons hair cut. hes 20 and at uni and keeps it long. Jay is not well aparently so passed her collegues details over Youliana who cut it and hes so happy with it. I would reccomend her too. 07450247365

I found a hairdresser that does curly hair in Kent!!

His name is Lewis and he owns 'The White Room' in Tunbridge Wells in the Pantilles.

Went in with skanky straggly hair. He was lovely and listened v v carefully to what i wanted. And then proceeded to cut it exactly how i wanted. He did cut it wet however but kept checking and explaining. He put layers in but v carefully. At the end i asked him to wash my hair again and blot the excess water out. No rubbing and no combing second wash round. Ran some aveda curl serum thru my hair and i left with wet hair much to my DDs horror. He did say that curly hair always needs a couple of washes after a cut to find itself and 'settle'

But OMG... It looks stunning now its dried. He's got rid of the dreaded triangle. And its edgy and sexy and no hint of a wedge or a helmet shape.

(Btw hes got super curly hair too and is v easy on the eye)

Leilamarie · 04/11/2014 15:49

Hi all,

Was very keen to use Jay after reading this thread but after contacting her she confirmed she's unfortunately still not well. She passed on Youliana's details but as I've not heard much about her I was hoping to get a few more references before trying her. Has anyone else tried her? Beautybymums have you used her again? Anyone know if she colours as well as cuts?

Thanks!

Beautybymums · 11/11/2014 21:52

@ Leilamarie
I havn't used her but a friend and 2 colleagues have and they were very very pleased. They have actually come in to work wearing their curly hair and I've never
seen them with their curls out for the 3
years I have been there. Not sure about color though.

I might try and convince them to review her on here if it helps everyone else.

punchkins · 11/11/2014 22:23

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this is a repeat. I met Sophie who writes franglaisemummy recently and she has lovely curls, of course I immediately accosted her to get her hairdressers details - Kim at Headmasters in Balham www.franglaisemummy.com/the-hunt-for-a-decent-hairdresser/
I haven't been yet but I'll be going soon and taking my two curly dds.

PurpleBerries · 20/02/2015 12:22

hi there,

just wondered if anyone had an updated number for Jay?

TIA

PurpleBerries · 20/02/2015 12:29

its okay, the number above worked.

lizasthename · 20/02/2015 12:43

Thanks so much for this all! I took the advice above and got in touch with Jay. She didn't have availability so she gave me Youliana's number. SHE WAS AMAZING! She only does curly hair and really knows her stuff as she has beautiful curly hair herself. She spent ages on my hair as she kept stopping to give me tips and advice. I'd previously gone to Devashan in New York and though they were good they spend about 80% of the time trying to sell you their products and the cut was good I noticed that near on everyone that came in the salon left with the same cut. The cut I got from Youliana has really changed my look and while before I would mostly have my hair up now I always wear it down. She advised me on products to buy (always sulphate free shampoo, silicon free conditioner and alcohol free gel) and because she comes to your house she gives you real advice away from commissions. I really cannot recommend her enough! Her number is 07450247365. Also it's worth getting some photos to show her of what you're looking for.

PurpleBerries · 20/02/2015 12:49

Great review, Liz. What a relief it must be to finally find a hairdresser you are happy with.

I am really hoping this will be the case with Jay (she has been texting me back and I haven't text Youliana so I will probably go with her - if she'll have me Smile)

My hair is a bit weird though - its very fine and mainly wavy, with the odd curl going through it. Sometimes it goes really curly and other times it looks fairly straight and limp. I do not understand my hair at all. Am hoping Jay will shed a bit of light...

Bubbshjs · 24/02/2015 23:20

Please continue to post your experiences ladies, though I doubt either Jay or Youliana would consider travelling out to me! I'm on the Hants/Berks/Surrey borders if anyone can recommend someone out my way.

Delphine31 · 24/02/2015 23:31

Hazel at belli capelli in Egham did a fab cut for me a few months ago. My curls never looked better and the salon experience was low-key and not intimidating which I appreciated!

I'm on the beds/Herts/Bucks border so Egham is a bit of a trek and although Hazel is definitely worth the journey I've just been struggling to find time to go. So tomorrow I've got an appointment with Kirtney Hughes, who specialises in dry cuts and is coming to my house. I'll report back Smile

Bubbshjs · 26/02/2015 16:37

How did it go???

Lidih · 20/03/2015 17:57

I found this topic googling Deva cut London and I'm thankful I did.
I got in contact with Jay as I was going on a trip to London and checked if she could cut my hair.
I have type C hair and I must say I never had hair cut I was so satisfied about.

Jay not only was very competent in cut my hair but gave lots of great tips. :)

I'm definitely saving her number.

Thank you Beautybymums for the tips!
