tired of skinny jeans!

That's it, really.

I must have been wearing them for about 8 years now and while I will continue to do so (I have a wardrobe full of them) I'm just fed up of wearing them all the time.

Every year or so the fashion writers will herald the return of flares, but it always ends up being a false dawn. But then I found these :

www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/product/moto-vintage-slim-flare-jeans-1959034

What do you think?! If Topshop are doing them they must be coming back in... surely? Or am I deluding myself?! And it so, can anybody recommend a fashionable alternative to skinnies?

Thank you!

I like them, bu they wouldn't suit my shape I don't think. But yes, they're nice, and I like the back pockets and colour.
I kind of hate skinnies too, but they seem to suit me best, which is a bit irritating.

I actually don't think flares or bootcut have ever been out of style at all, it's just that skinnies are the most prevalent style available in stores, and this (to my mind) tends to dictate what people buy the most.

Anyhow, trust your own judgement, I'd say go for it!

Also, I think it's good to have at least one pair of wider leg jeans in your wardrobe because they are perfectly suited to tighter fitted tops, which don't always work flatteringly with super skinny jeans.

mollygibson · 15/07/2013 15:23

Thank you, this is good news! I thought everybody would tell me it was a fashion fail Grin

I once would have trusted my own judgement but recently seem to have lost my confidence style-wise - also, after years of wearing skinnies I've recently realised that I'm not convinced I actually suit them... I'm reasonably slim but when I put weight on like just now it all goes on my hips - I'm paraniod I look top-heavy!

I still think people who suit skinnies look fab in them but am no longer convinced that I am one of these people - but after all these years I don't know what else to wear! I tried boyfriend but they make me look like a clown.

I think I will go and try the flares on! Smile

I don't think there are many truly slouch/wide leg jeans out there at the moment either. Even flares and bootcut tend to still fit like skinny jeans from the knee upwards, like a second skin.

I remember when you could find slouchier fit jeans everywhere (late 90's I think) and I loved that, it was more my thing, even if skinnies suit me. I used to have these superb Moto pure denim jeans from Topshop through the 90's and they lasted me forever. I miss them so much.

Everything seems to be about super tight fit nowadays. Unless I go to M&S..

mollygibson · 15/07/2013 16:05

Oh my goodness, yes! I loved that look! Felt much more relaxed!

I had loads of pairs of slouchy jeans - I had a pair of French Connection ones that I loved and I also liked Gap Long and Lean (don't know if they were meant to be slouchy but they were on me). I used to get fed up because the bottoms always got ripped and worn at the back - one of the things I liked about skinny jeans was that that didn't happen - but I am feeling quite nostalgic for that now!

I hear you about the skinny fit from the knee upwards, just don't feel it does anything for my thighs! I have high hopes of the Moto jeans, hope I won't be disappointed!

I've staged a revolt against skinny jeans and gone back to slim, straight leg. Much more flattering on the lumps and bumps.

SwedishEdith · 15/07/2013 16:23

Look on Uniqlo. Their straight jeans are more comfortable

finlaysmum12 · 15/07/2013 18:48

I wear skinnies, straight leg and boyfriend, and am tempted by the wide leg jeans in the toast sale!!

finlaysmum12 · 15/07/2013 18:49

oh, and I love my Oasis Garnet jeans! (often to be found on ebay)

Corygal · 15/07/2013 18:56

I loathe skinnies now - tired, ugly and do no one any favours. Models have ditched them, which under the circs seems telling.

JazzDalek · 15/07/2013 19:04

Flares, slim flares, and slouch have never gone away for me. I have a couple of pairs of skinnies but far prefer the other cuts, they just suit me better (and tend to be much more comfortable).

My favourite jeans are Firetrap B-Dash slouch jeans.

I champion Ebay for jeans - huge range of styles, good brands for a few quid, especially for less-favoured cuts like flare and slouch. Often barely used or not at all. Can't remember the last time I bought jeans on the high street!

lowra · 15/07/2013 21:47

Unfortunately 'mom' jeans seem to have taken over as the favourite with the fashion kids. I say unfortunately as anyone who is a mom, or over 30 or above a size 8 looks appalling in them.

QueenCadbury · 15/07/2013 22:01

For me, flares/bootcut/baby bootcut whatever you want to call them have never gone out of fashion. They suit me much better and I find skinnies so restrictive. You may find you need different tops though as flares/boots need a more fitted style.

iclaudius · 15/07/2013 22:08

Skinny jeans are exhausting! I'm so tired after even putting them on. Just bought two new pairs but op you are so right

RonaldMcDonald · 15/07/2013 22:12

I am wearing shorts

other than that
pajama trews
combat skinnies which I adore for some reason
wide legged boyfriend jeans
i am only wearing superskinnies for jeans now

emsyj · 15/07/2013 22:49

I am absolutely desperate for a massive pair of wide-leg bell-bottomed jeans - I have tons of jeggings and skinnies and I'm sick of the sight of them, but cannot find anything else in the shops. Sad

bettycocker · 16/07/2013 08:05

I love those Topshop jeans molly and I too long for a nice pair of flares.

Is Topshop embroiled in some kind of conspiracy to never stock my size? I can never get the pair of jeans I want on their site. Same with Uniqlo. Sad

BabCNesbitt · 16/07/2013 08:59

How tall are those of you who like wide leg jeans? I'm definitely wearying of skinnies, but as an earlier poster said, wider legs tend to make me look clownish.

NoComet · 16/07/2013 09:12

Skinny jeans and sandals or long boots, boot cut jeans and mum boots, I'm very happy in either.

Wide legged, souchy, boyfriend etc., if your 45, sized 16 and 5'4" they are a disaster you just look like a blob in cheap jeans, that doesn't own a mirror.

polyhymnia · 16/07/2013 09:27

Yup clownish is the word for how wide leg jeans or trousers look on me.
I'm tall and my body is a large hourglass but have long slim mish legs. So skinnies or at least bootcuts tight to most of my legs, with long but never tent-like tops, look fine. If I get even so-called straight legs in the size I need for my body they flap round my legs unflatteringly making them look much bigger than they are.

Btw, just out of interest, what do people think are the key features of a'mom's jean??

Lagoonablue · 16/07/2013 09:30

I hope flares/bootcut come back. I too am ready for a change. They are so flattering and you don't have that whole tuck in thing as you do with skinnies when you wear boots.

mollygibson · 16/07/2013 09:37

Thanks everyone for your suggestions or just confirming what I already thought!

Betty, have you tried the "check stores" tool? There were none in my size left online but according to the website they were in stock in only one of the Topshops in my town... so I ran in there after work last night and I did indeed buy me a pair of flares! Not the ones I posted though, but these :

www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/product/moto-indigo-flare-jeans-1959026

I tried the first ones on and I still do really like them, but they sort of didn't seem to look as good on me as on the model (quelle suprise!) They were tighter on my thighs than I expected. Hopefully the indigo is more slimming and I thought they had a sort of 70's vibe which I liked.

So I am now embracing the flare - carrot-legs no more! My dilemma now is... what to wear with them??? It's so long since I wore flares, I don't want to look all "Victoria Beckham in 2002".

BabC, I am about 5"4 I think - sort of average, and I have quite long legs, but I am wary of the clown look as well. Most fashion features say you have to wear flares with heels/wedges - so I am wondering, is it everacceptable to wear them with flats?

OP posts:
BabCNesbitt · 16/07/2013 09:43

I wonder that too! Especially as my experience of wider-leg trousers also involved tripping over the hems a lot. Grin Doing that in heels could be lethal!

mollygibson · 16/07/2013 09:52

Yes Bab, it is going to be weird having all that excess material around my ankles again!

I was also reflecting that when I wore flares before I was in my 20's and it wasn't such a hassle to wear high heels all the time but nowadays I sort of need to be practical (hate that word!)
