Are cropped jeans really a no no?

I've recently lost a lot of weight and I have got down to a size 10 from a 16. I've had to change all my wardrobe so I don't yet have lots to wear.

I was watching Gok on 4seven last night an he said that cropped jeans were never good. Sad The only pair of jeans I have that fit well are cropped. I'm wearing them today with a white shirt, statement necklace, and sunglasses. I thought it was a classic look. Am I wrong?

I have cropped jeans and I really like them. If you like them wear them. Who cares what Gok thinks.

Congratulations on your weight loss. I think these type of "rules" are made to be broken and your outfit sounds great. What was Gok's rationale for forbidding them? Can you ask a good friend or your partner (if you have one) for an honest opinion, if you are worried?

frenchfancy · 04/07/2013 09:09

No point asking DH he says I look great whatever I wear. DD says a look nice though (she is 13 so that is high praise!)

Grok Wan knows nothing. Don't believe a word he says. As an eg- have you seen his range at Sainsbury's.....think he's taking the mikes of us women ;)

dreamingofsun · 04/07/2013 09:12

i think they look good, only time i really don't like them is when they are long cropped as they can look like normal jeans that have shrunk in the wash or someone with absolutely no taste who has just bought normal ones that are too short

Chopstheduck · 04/07/2013 09:12

I must have missed that bit of Gok!

I'm in the same position as you though - 5'11 and gone from a 20/22 to a 14 and I love my cropped jeans. I went and bought three pairs in different colours and wear them with vest tops and sheer shirts over. They are great for me because I cycle a lot and they don't get grubby in the chain. I find them really slimming too!

Chopstheduck · 04/07/2013 09:16

I've been googling and according to Cok they are a no for shorter ladies because they add width. I think though on a slimmer figure that is bollocks. One of my skinny petite friends looks fab in them!

AcrylicPlexiglass · 04/07/2013 09:18

If dd says you look good then you do, I'm sure.:) My teens are nothing if not blisteringly honest!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 04/07/2013 09:19

I was just going to say have you not seen his Sainsburys range? The man knows nothing.

cafenoir · 04/07/2013 09:21

I think it depends on body shape more than height. I've seen plenty of people look great in cropped jeans/trousers etc. I look grotty in them because I'm 5'1" and broad in the hips so they really do make me look short/squat. But for someone small but narrow and with balanced proportions, I think they look great. Gok, Shmock! :)

RobotBananas · 04/07/2013 09:21

As a friend of mine said the other day:
"Gok Wan is a creepy sex pest"

Totally irrelevant to this thread, but I thought it was funny

Tweet2tweet · 04/07/2013 09:28

It's also been reported that he's really horrible to the models etc on the show. Calling them all sorts of names and being a rather unpleasant so and so.

MissBeehiving · 04/07/2013 09:31

I really like cropped jeans and they look great. Ignore Gok

Fairylea · 04/07/2013 09:34

I know people who have worked closely with Gok and sadly they all say he is absolutely vile behind the scenes and incredibly rude to the models (I used to work in the make up industry and knew a lot of make up artists).

Ignore everything he says. I felt sorry for that woman on the show, he made her look about 50.

DonutForMyself · 04/07/2013 09:47

Tell that to Audrey Hepburn. I think if they finish just below the knee they look great. Any longer and they stop at the wide part of your calf and that can look a bit unflattering or as someone else said, too long and they just look like ankle swingers.

I'm sure you look great and 13 y/os don't know how to be diplomatic, so that says a lot!

BaconAndAvocado · 04/07/2013 09:51

Reading this thread with great interest.

Although I love skinny jeans, they can get rather uncomfortable. Also I wanted some jeans for,the summer hols to trawl to the beach and back in, so I thought a pair of looser, cropped jeans would be perfect.

I'm 5' 5" size 12 and a pear, so would they add width?

Am ill on the sofa at the mo so can't do,the obvious thing and go to the shops to,try some on!

polyhymnia · 04/07/2013 09:53

I think they are absolutely fine and also nice and cool in summer. Gok is an unpleasant individual with poor taste. He usually makes his unfortunate 'victims' look really naff. Ignore.

Tweet2tweet · 04/07/2013 09:57

Yay- down with Gok ;)

drawohamme · 04/07/2013 10:14

If you're a size ten you'll look great in anything!

ShoeWhore · 04/07/2013 10:27

I think it really depends on your body shape and length of your legs! I've got fairly short legs so avoid cropped trousers as they look rubbish on me. I'd have thought your teenage dd would give a very harsh honest opinion!

lollylaughs · 04/07/2013 10:40

Draw, not really. Im size 10 and absolutely cannot wear them. I have a really long body and short legs and look hideous in them.

I envy those who wear them well, sadly im not one of them.

EarlyInTheMorning · 04/07/2013 10:41

Really? Does anyone listen to Gok? Confused

LaRegina · 04/07/2013 10:53

I wouldn't listed to Gok personally - he makes people on his show look hideous - I only watch for the comedy value Grin

I wear cropped jeans/trousers/leggings all the time - I love them. But I am tall (5ft 9) and I have skinny ankles. I do think sometimes if somebody shorter - with big ankles - wears them, it's not the most flattering look TBH...

LillianGish · 04/07/2013 10:58

How do you think you look in them? These sort of silly rules rarely apply across the board. Personally I would wear them instead of shorts - so where shorts would look terrible on me and be a complete no no cropped jeans are a good compromise if I don't want to wear a dress (which is always the best look for me, but sometimes just not appropriate). Make your own rules based on what looks good on you that way you'll always look fabulous!
