Be honest with me - these shoes are frumpy, aren't they?

Middle-aged, trying not to be too frumpy but need to be comfy. Hit me with it, these shoes need to go back, don't they?

Yep....frumpy definitely frumpy.

IKnowWhat · 05/06/2013 01:04

Nah, they are ok and they look lovely and comfy. In fact I like them.
Smile

As long as the rest of your clothes are not Per Una (or similar) then they are perfectly acceptable and comfy

IdealHomeHouseBeautifulLivinge · 05/06/2013 01:30

thank you - I think Smile

perhaps those who are kind enough to reply could give an indication of their age. Not expecting 25 year olds to find me anything less than frumpy but would be worried if a 40+ thought I was.

TIA

late late 40s. They are the sort of shoes I just wouldn't wear cause they to me are too old ladyish. Other people might love them. But for me I would want a more trendyish pair of ballet flats that are comfy.Smile

kohl · 05/06/2013 02:27

I don't like them and am 33. HOWEVER- if you like them and they're comfy, why not wear them joyfully?

Don't send them back just because some people may think they're frumpy or mumsy or whatever other thing we're calling it.
My Grandmother wore some stuff that I'm sure people thought was pretty frumpy on the hanger, as I would've done. But she was just so joyful and wonderful that she made anything (yes, even you fawn anorak) look stylish and great.

kohl · 05/06/2013 02:31

Ok, have just read they back and realise how very sanctimonious I sound, I didn't mean to preach-sorry.
I can understand how feeling that you might be looking older than your years, or frumpy can make one feel crap, and that feeling might as well be avoided.

morethanalltheteainchina · 05/06/2013 04:36

Completely honest answer? Yes, IMO they are pretty frumpy.

I'm in my late mid-late 20's and would only wear them if I had to have comfortable and flat black shoes for work e.g. waitressing. They aren't hideous but they aren't the sort of thing I would chose to wear in my own free time.

SanityClause · 05/06/2013 06:01

I'm 44. I think they're frumpy.

But, if you like them, wear them.

SundaySimmons · 05/06/2013 06:05

I am nearly 50 and would never wear them now or previously. They look like school shoes for a 7 year old. Sorry.

If you work somewhere where you have to be smart and can't wear high heels then they would do the job. In thinking of an assistant in M&S would wear these.

Asos have black pumps which are more trendier than the ones you have pictured

I have Gabor work shoes because I need comfort - these would fit that bill too (though I wouldn't be wearing them outside the workplace.)

I think Gabor are always frumpy (sorry)
But having said that, I can't wear normal ballet flats because there is almost nothing between the crunching bones of my ageing feet, and the concrete. Just a thin sliver of sole.
(They must be the cheapest ever shoes to produce, there is no engineering in them whatsoever.)

Ruralninja · 05/06/2013 07:00

Have you looked at Camper shoes? They have lovely rubber soles/heels that make them v comfy and lots of not frumpy styles

WipsGlitter · 05/06/2013 07:01

I'm 42 and think they're frumpy. And expensive! What about Clarks?

Pfaffer · 05/06/2013 07:04

There's also a brand called Softinos: it's Fly London's attempts to nab the Camper market. Nicer shoes than Camper, better price, very comfortable, have ballet flats.

PiratePanda · 05/06/2013 07:05

Gabor are not ALWAYS frumpy - in amongst the frump I have found some gems over the years, and boy are they comfortable.

Those shoes are not the frumpiest I've seen - they're OK, but I'm sure you can do better.

KatyDid02 · 05/06/2013 07:07

Are Hotter shoes frumpy?

IdealHomeHouseBeautifulLivinge · 05/06/2013 08:04

Thank you for replies - they're going back Grin. Impulse buy. Can't wear proper ballet flats because of ageing bones,

Will look at links provided thanks.

I have them for work. They look better on.

They have been admired by younger trendier colleagues

And they are comfortable

I am middle aged

Sunnysummer · 05/06/2013 10:37

Yes, though that's only a problem if you feel it's a problem... But it sounds like it is, so I'd send them back and maybe go for something comfy but a little more trendy, like Camper. Smile

BerryBlast · 05/06/2013 10:48

49 here and I would wear them. I completely understand about comfortable shoes - I just can't wear the same shoes that I could wear 5 years ago.

SundaySimmons · 05/06/2013 10:50

Realistically it's about being comfortable and practical and if you're job means you need to be comfortable then wear what you please. A friend of mine wears a hideous looking pair of clogs but as she points out, they are very comfortable and she walks around a lot at work.

As much as I hate the Kardashians I recently saw the old mother wearing a pair of brogues that look very comfy and I wouldn't mind a pair even though brogues are not my thing at all!

SundaySimmons · 05/06/2013 10:55

Here are the brogues that look like something Charlie Chaplin would wear but look oh so comfortable

Sorry it's a DM article but you have to scroll down to see kris
