Nude tights - a big no or ok?

fatsatsuma · 27/05/2013 09:48

I am going to a smart garden-party type event on Thursday. The forecast is cool and damp. The only suitable outfit I own involves a knee length dress which I'm planning to wear with peep-toe wedges, as we will be on grass.

I know I'm going to freeze, and have not got round to fake tanning my legs, so am contemplating a pair of nude tights - expensive M&S Dare to Bare ones. They look ok but admittedly not the same as bare legs. Am I committing style heresy? Please tell me tights are ok in these dire circumstances - I'm dreading the day already.

the marks oiled look 7 denier are ace

odnt go too dark
they will only work for one wear

mewkins · 27/05/2013 09:58

Lots of people (me included!) wear them. If you get good well matched ones they look like your legs but better. Plus they are warmer. There is nothing wrong with them! They are just tights. Who decreed that it's not ok? And why?!

fatsatsuma · 27/05/2013 09:59

Thanks. I ended up getting the palest shade as I'm v fair. I guess I'm not aiming to have tanned legs, just smoother and less blotchy than if they were bare, iykwim.

Sorry last post was to nehru. No one's told me I can't wear them, but I think I've been conditioned by the awful orange tight that women used to wear into thinking they're a no-no. My issue is that they don't look exactly like my bare legs but better - if you pay any attention to my legs you can tell they're tights. They look kind of chalky. Not in a bad way - they're almost exactly my skin colour - but they are not literally invisible.

Maybe I'm over thinking this Blush Grin

the marks ones make them look liek an awesome realistic fake tan. I went too dark for one do when I bought them in a hurry and looked like i had a skin problem

Nehru · 27/05/2013 10:07

think i got natural NOT suntan!!

fatsatsuma · 27/05/2013 10:10

Maybe I should have gone one shade darker. Think I got nude rather than natural tan. Trouble is you can't try them on so it's an expensive mistake.

Also eat a lot of eggs, fish and salad so not too meat heavy.

MarshaBrady · 27/05/2013 10:12

Argh not whilst wearing nude tights obviously.

FamiliesShareGerms · 27/05/2013 10:14

Any tights would always be better than my bare legs...

LaCerbiatta · 27/05/2013 10:29

I went to a wedding abroad a week ago. Temp was 18c so decided against tights, also didn't think it went with my dress and sandals. In a party of roughly 100 people I was the only one not wearing nude tights! Felt totally self conscious! Looks like I've been living here (and on mn) for too long!

fatsatsuma · 27/05/2013 10:29

Thanks marsha I'll bear it in mind Grin

Go for it!

polyhymnia · 27/05/2013 10:37

Go for it. Definitely better than bare legs for this sort of weather as long as they are the 'new generation' sort like yours, not the old awful 'American Tan' type.

LaCerbiatta · 27/05/2013 10:39

Should have added that some of them were so 'nude' that at first they looked just like bare legs!

I bought some before deciding not to wear them and was advised that Dim were the best ones. Not sure you can get them here though.

LittleWhile · 27/05/2013 10:43

I think it depends on your age! Bare legs at a formal function, on a woman over 45 is probably not a good look! Certainly not on me anyway!

EleanorFarjeon · 27/05/2013 10:44

I'd like to see the M&S ones. Do they have toes?

I went to a do yesterday and a couple of women (& not old women) had nude tights on, but they looked very obvious (and frumpy) imo. A bit Kate Middleton, iykwim.

beginnings · 27/05/2013 10:45

Unless you're 18, wear tights. For the last few years I have cringed at photos at this time of the year of the great and the good with no tights on. Legs just don't look dressed!! And women over the age of 25 honestly, shouldn't have knobbly knees on display (Carole Middleton I'm looking at you).

EleanorFarjeon · 27/05/2013 10:51

I think if your legs are non veiny, you can get away with bare legs.

I'm 42 and wore a shortish dress yesterday with bare legs. I had (non streaky) fake tan and lightly oiled legs and my legs looked fine.

Nehru · 27/05/2013 10:56

no
you cant tell you have them on, it looks just like amazing glossy immaculado legs

and i hate nude tights. The downside is they are one wear; only I bet BHS do something the same and cheaper

Nehru · 27/05/2013 10:56

"one wear only. "

fatsatsuma · 27/05/2013 11:08

Eleanor I think you are a lone voice on this one. My legs aren't bad but I won't be able to do a good job with the fake tan before thurs.

Thanks everyone for helpful replies. I think I'll go with the majority and wear the tights

well you could also try the sally hansen spray stuff which is like a foundation for legs, I prefer it to tights as I hate having all that closed in feeling 'up top' IYSWIM it sprays on and blends in like a foundation and once set won't budged til you wash it off in the shower. makes legs look all smooth but bare.
