Maybe its where I now live, but..
when I was a teenager in the 80s we could not get any cheap (affordable) fashion clothes or if you could they were utter crap.
Now there are loads of affordable and decent fashion shops around.
Personally think today's fashions are much better than the 80s.

nailpolish · 15/05/2006 13:26

teenage girls are wearing the same as they did in the eighties

stripy tops
leggings
flatties with pointy toes
side ponytails
big plastic belts
denim pinafores

its the 80's all over again

meowmix · 15/05/2006 13:26

no, just colder I'd imagine

cod · 15/05/2006 13:27

lables werent so prevalent then were they

God yes.

80s-- awful shaggy perms, high waisted trousers and frumpy shoes. Rugby shirts. Benetton jumpers in sicky pastel shades, shirts with collars turned up worn TUCKED IN. blue eyeliner and matching mascara. Frosted pink lipstick.

now-- glossy, swingy, hair with at least 3 different coloured highlights in. Jeans or combats that show off their flat tummies instead of making them look 3 stone heavier than they are. Sweet little ballet pumps or killer heels. Cool accessories. Year-round glow thanks to Holiday Skin phenomenon. Much, much cooler parents than ours.

Blu · 15/05/2006 13:29

definitely.
It's the thongs that make the difference.

Teenagers looked silly then, they look silly now - the only good thing is that I'm not a teenager now so I don't feel obliged to wear daft clothes.

Feistybird · 15/05/2006 13:30

This is as bad as DP's mate saying 'girls nowadays are much prettier than they were in the 80s'. I told him that was the first step towards him becoming an old perv (he's 40).

Utter crap, when you look back of course those hairdos look bizarre, but at the time, they were the dogs bolleaux - it was all about strong women, rather than the barbie-esque girly-girl fashions of today.

There will be an 80s revival soon (yes even the hairdos). Mark my words.

cod · 15/05/2006 13:30

there wa a LOT of blakc want here then

OP posts:
Fimbo · 15/05/2006 13:30

I remember wearing those hideous legging things (nay footless tights) under denim mini skirts which is fashionable now.

cod · 15/05/2006 13:30

i lie leggings
not camel toe tho

OP posts:
Tinker · 15/05/2006 13:30

Teenage girls never really look stylish, always just look like fashion victims.

Pruni · 15/05/2006 13:31

Well they haven't got those crappy perms
Or baggy trousers up to their armpits

So I'd say 'yes'

[bitter emoticon]

Feistybird · 15/05/2006 13:31

Tinker - that's so right.

cod · 15/05/2006 13:32

Feistybird - you mean my boys will want their hair like \link{http://img.lightreading.com/2001/05/5414_score.gif\this}[shock]?

winnie · 15/05/2006 13:32

Grin tinker

Piffle · 15/05/2006 13:33

Can I say thats the biggest load of arse I've ever heard.
Leg warmers, back combing, peroxide fringes...
I WAS an icon I KNOW this

KTeePee · 15/05/2006 13:33

Mmm not sure about stylish... there seems to be a lot less individuality about - when I was a teenager I didn't want to look the same as everyone else and so made a lot of my own clothes. Even a lot of the "alternative" hairstyles and clothes about now are just rehashing things from the 70s and 80s.

One thing I do feel is that girls are more confident about their bodies now (maybe to the extent they flaunt them too much). When I was a teenager most girls seemed to be embarassed by their developing bodies and would have preferred to keep a more boyish figure, hence clothes were worn baggier. I think this was a great shame - I'm sure my figure now is nowhere near as good as when I was a teen but I think overall I look better because I wear clothes that are more fitted rather than shapeless....

nailpolish · 15/05/2006 13:34

that picture moo linked of bananarama - ive seen very very similar tops in topshop recently

with denim skirts and plastic shoes

ok, the hairdo's and the make up is more subtle now

and we have MUCH better beauty products now

serums etc for hair
beauty flash balm etc for skin

remember when all we had was oil of ulay and harmony hairspray???

moondog · 15/05/2006 13:34

Orlando, you must have been spying on all the girls I went to boarding school with!
They had a penchant for coloured tights too as i recall.
My chunky thighed friend favoured mustard yello and sage green.

Smashing.

Feistybird · 15/05/2006 13:34

Moo, of course they will.

moondog · 15/05/2006 13:34

Too many teenage fatties about now, with wobbly tums on show.
