Oops look like a few of you have the same idea

marthamoo · 15/05/2006 13:36

Ooooh, and can I say "you're not really going out looking like that, are you?" like my Mum used to say to me? Cool Grin

nailpolish · 15/05/2006 13:36

girls now want ££££££'s make up and hair stuff

i used to spike my hair with fairy liquid and my 'best' fragrance was impulse chic (one can per night out)

waterfalls · 15/05/2006 13:36

I used to love my rah rah skirt and donkey jacketGrin

Fimbo · 15/05/2006 13:36

Hi-lights, lo-lights, foils, weave wrap, full head, half head etc all we had then was Shaders and Toners, oh and sun-in which turned your hair yellow

serenity · 15/05/2006 13:37

Can I just say the I never wore any of the clothes that Orlando listed in the 80's!

They seem to wear a lot less now than when I was a teenager, and not all teenagers have washboard ads. Quite a few of the ones around here could do with higher waists and longer tops, because I really don't want to watch their wobbly bits in the high street. I don't subject them to mine Grin Oh well at least they aren't self conscious about themselves.

All teenagers wear ridiculous clothes, it's a law I'm sure.

nailpolish · 15/05/2006 13:37

the best example of fashion full circle is the puffball skirt

winnie · 15/05/2006 13:38

marthamoo, I have said that to my dd Blush

Orlando · 15/05/2006 13:38

I was at that kind of school too, MD-- the Benetton jumpers gave it away, didn't they?

But the thing was that teenage girls always dressed to look 35 in the 80s...

Now it's the other way round and we're all desperately trying to dress like 16 year olds.

marthamoo · 15/05/2006 13:39

Lol, winnie.

FrayedKnot · 15/05/2006 13:39

We were more resourceful.

I made myself two pairs of stripey nautical style pedal pushers, using a Mccalls pattern and mum's old sewing machine, and a sequin adorned hairband.

These days they got it soooo easy.

CountessDracula · 15/05/2006 13:39

They seem more groomed now

nailpolish · 15/05/2006 13:39

fimbo that reminds me of these caps you wore and the hairdresser yanked through the holes strands of your hair (ouch) and then painted bleach

and PERMS (good god what were we thinking)

moondog · 15/05/2006 13:39

Anne French cleansing milk,Boots cucumber face mask and lip gloss (that froze in the winter because our dorms were so cold) was the extent of our beauty regime.....

Feistybird · 15/05/2006 13:40

yes we'll all be watching TOTP on telly and saying things like...

'Is that a girl or a boy?'

'He has more make-up than a Boots counter'

'Look at him, bloody jessie'

like my dad did.

Fimbo · 15/05/2006 13:42

My mum used to home perm my hair - Pin up it was called! Her and my auntie used to share the perm rollers - back and forth they went.

Tinker · 15/05/2006 13:42

Oh, I had a donkey jacket and a woollen hat a la Dexy's Midnight Runners Blush

moondog · 15/05/2006 13:43

We already do Feisty!! Grin

marthamoo · 15/05/2006 13:44

That's true, FrayedKnot - my best friend had a little cottage industry going with her Mum's sewing machine - adapting men's shirts by trimming off the collar, cutting the front off to crop-top level and making shirt-tails at the back, then customising with braid and buttons.

And yes, she did one for me too...I wore it with a black ankle length fish tail skirt (my Mum made it), shocking pink ankle socks and black school pumps. Hair back-combed to within an inch of its life and blue mascara...

I wish I had a photo Grin

Feistybird · 15/05/2006 13:46

Sounds gorgeous moo Wink

CatBert · 15/05/2006 13:57

As a friend and I walked past two young frips, wearing (almonst but not quite identically) skinny jeans with pointy flats, white thick belts with studs and rivets, horizontal striped red and white tops, she said to me "we looked a LOT better than that when we were wearing the same thing... don'tcha think?" I agreed wholeheartedly. Grin Then I said "They are missing the flock of seagulls / spiral perm hair, the kitten heels are not worn down to plastic white, no yards of black lace and a million jangly bangles, oh and the tops are not batwings and they didn't seem to have one spot between them" and we thought - well, perhaps not...

Frankie say Relax...

moondog · 15/05/2006 14:01

Lol at heels worn down.
Couple of hickies in general decolletage area also de rigeur...

nailpolish · 15/05/2006 14:02

thats a good point MD

dont see many lovebites these days

supakids · 15/05/2006 14:07

All the teenage girls look the same these days. The biggest difference is they all seem like tarts and give it up to anyone at the price of a drink. (very few exceptions) Girls then were far more selective, classy, had better principles and showed respect for themselves as well as their elders. (Thats me done, I will step down from my soapbox now) Grin

blueteddy · 15/05/2006 14:32

Well they have to be more stylish now. Lets think back to the dodgy neon socks (think I wore a green one on one foot & a pink one on the otherBlush), fingerless gloves, tucker boots, backwing jumpers, neon leggings, fame sweatshirts, ski pants & snow wash jeans!!
Todays teenagers HAVE to look more stylish!
God, I was cool in the 80's!Grin
