I need a frock for a Sports Award Dinner. Do I go LBD route or Footballers' Wives glitzy?

It is the UK Boxing Sports Award Dinner (think TV Sports Personality without the cameras)
I am 5'2" and size 16. Will be wearing Bridget Jones style pants and Super Nork Scaffolding.
I would love to be elegant, have seen a couple of dresses in Principles, but not 100% sure - what do you think?

Oh, and I need shoes too.

(Just looked in my wardrobe - my last pair of heels were bought 6 years ago!)

Think the black on ehas more structure to it and may be more flattering. But i'm never usually any good at this sort of thing.

MamaG · 26/04/2006 12:00

I prefer the black - go for glam with shoes, bag and jewellery Grin

Loving the blue dress and to me it sounds like quite a glam night. The LBD is very nice and is machine washable!! but I think I would go blue! ;) have a great night!!

Bugsy2 · 26/04/2006 12:12

I think the blue is prettier and less footballer wifey than the black dress.

Twinkie1 · 26/04/2006 12:16

I would go black I think - always think those beaded dresses look like they are for older women!! (Sorry to be blunt here!!!)

Gingerbear · 26/04/2006 13:09

thanks all, I like the flattering v shaped parts on the black dress, but the blue dress is a lovely colour (and more flattering to my pale skin)

they are both lovely but the blue is that bit more special.

Gingerbear · 26/04/2006 14:39

what are your upper arms like?

I think dresses with sleeves are more flattering, or ones with a cover up \link{http://www.debenhams.com/jv/product_details_jv.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=9306979&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=7023773&bmUID=1146060881726\like this one}.

Tons on the Debenhams site.

Gingerbear · 26/04/2006 15:26

oh thanks Oliveoil, some nice frocks there. good point about upper arms, I have lost some weight recently, but still have bingo wings. Was thinking of a chiffony coverup - there was a principles dress with beading like the blue one, but it had a shrug type bolero thing - in a grey colour though (not good on me)

where do you live?

If I were you, I would take off for the day to a big store and get a personal shopper to sort you out, they will know where everything is and what goes with what.

I don't really like the blue dress, just wanted to illustrate the floaty cover up thing.

LOVE the red one, but when would I wear that? Asda?

Gingerbear · 26/04/2006 15:37

Oh, not boxing - just that we are on the Boxing Board table.

Gulp - it is at Cardiff City Hall.

Doncaster, so I can easily get to Leeds/Meadowhall. Think I will ring up and make an appointment with personal shopper in Debenhams.
Great idea.
