What do you think of this dress for my husband's 50th?? (i am 42!)

I hope this cut and paste of web address works:

www.johnlewis.com/338320/Product.aspx#BVRRWidgetID

I am petite, size 8-10, not too much boobs to speak of (!) and 5ft 4. Therefore, anything baggy, ie not fitted, tends to make me look a bit pregnant!

We are going out to dinner as a group of 12 of us, a nice but not posh restaurant. I want to look nice but not overfussy. I tend to head towards a black dress, especially at this time of year (it's next week).

Never heard of this 'designer' before. What do you think??? Please be honest and if you think you know something nicer please add!

yy, vampy colours are best on short neat nails.

notMarlene · 17/01/2013 15:32

2 or 3 mm of white short.

DISASTER!! Dress arrived, it looks truly awful on!! I am 5ft 4" and this dress is about 2 inches below the knee and not fitted at all, words can't describe how awful it looks!!
I am now in a rush to buy a dress as do is on Friday. Have 4 children and no possibility to shop so it's going to have to be online!!
I think I realise I need a more fitted dress, rather than shift dress, and still going for black as now have shoes and a clutch!
What does anyone think of this?

Oh no ! what a nightmare ! new dress is lovely as well, but I think this might be a bit long too? do JL do same perhaps in Petite ? did you go for heels in the end ? if it was the flats then definite no no - will have a look on their site to see if I can find anything else, don't panic, you will get to the ball cinders !

reliablemillipede · 22/01/2013 20:12

What about this ? looks a bit shorter ?

Janus · 22/01/2013 20:13

I have heels!! I think if I can get it tomorrow my local launderette may be able to take it up a few inches in time. It was the general ill fitting of the other one that made me look awful! I am panicking big time!!
Thanks for the reply.

I do like a bit of Ted Baker! But i think I'm more a size 2 with them which is sold out. Also never worn a peplum before, not sure if it would suit? I would even do a Ted Baker top with a pencil skirt or something and usually I can find a Ted Baker top no problem but can't see any I like at the moment.

And Breathe!!

Am still looking at Jl, not an awful lot of choice really when you actually start to look properly iyswim, good idea about getting 2nd choice dress taken up, you are the same height as me, and long things just make me look silly, needs to be just on or above the knee, am looking at their mini dresses now to see if anything else there !

reliablemillipede · 22/01/2013 21:13

No, can't see anything else on the Jl site !

Oblomov · 22/01/2013 21:18

JL dress looks nice. Please order 3 or 4. Tonight. All can be returned.
MN is great at this. The ladies sorted me out for my dress for my 40th this weekend.
We will get you sorted!!

notMarlene · 22/01/2013 22:49

Oh bugger bugger. Right. Agree about ordering at least two tonight, 3 would be better. Returns are easy.

NotMarlene, I'm not brave enough for that dress! 'Tis lovely though.

Hmm, I'm the same size/build as you and looking at the first dress thought it wouldn't suit me - and then got to the bit where you said it didn't!

All of those are quite high-necked which on small boobs seems to flatten them even more. Can you not find something with a v-neck?

reliablemillipede · 23/01/2013 12:41

Out of the 3 new ones I like the 2nd one ( Ted Baker), I think that this is the one that will suit you best ( same size/shape as me), I think no 1 is pretty but is not dressy enough, and I think 3 will swamp you as it's a bit shapeless ! - did dress no 2 arrive in from JL ? let us know !!!

Janus · 23/01/2013 12:57

Jamais, I agree, may flatten boobs, a price I am now willing to pay!! I do like a v-neck but just didn't find one I like.
Reliable, yep, I'm willing to bet number 3 swamps me! JL dress will not arrive until tomorrow, you must have to order before a certain time for next day delivery.

One of them better work! Will let you know ... !

Just noticed you are going out tomorrow so I guess you must have narrowed it down by now!

Heavywheezing · 24/01/2013 17:14

I was going to hope you said that dress. It's gorgeous and I would buy it for a special occasion. I'm 38. Her stuff for John Lewis is lovely

reliablemillipede · 25/01/2013 18:43

Dying to know which dress you wore in the end !!??

Janus · 26/01/2013 08:17

Hi all, what a fab night, in the end I wore:

www.asos.comTed-Baker/Ted-Baker-Mesh-Insert-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2716578

With this bag:

www.kurtgeiger.com/bags/clutch-bags/olivia-tan-synthetic-miss-kg-bag.html

And these shoes:

www.next.co.uk/x51340s5#785432x51

And very dark red vampy nails!!

I felt wonderful and it's all thanks to you!

I am doing the honourable thing of letting my husband have a lie in while I try and entertain 2 out of the 4 children that are up and wishing maybe I had a glass or two less of the red wine!!
