What do you think of this dress for my husband's 50th?? (i am 42!)

I hope this cut and paste of web address works:

www.johnlewis.com/338320/Product.aspx#BVRRWidgetID

I am petite, size 8-10, not too much boobs to speak of (!) and 5ft 4. Therefore, anything baggy, ie not fitted, tends to make me look a bit pregnant!

We are going out to dinner as a group of 12 of us, a nice but not posh restaurant. I want to look nice but not overfussy. I tend to head towards a black dress, especially at this time of year (it's next week).

Never heard of this 'designer' before. What do you think??? Please be honest and if you think you know something nicer please add!

Beautiful dress! Could you manage this sort of heel height?

black flats

BluelightsAndSirens · 15/01/2013 20:49

Lovely dress. I think the flats linked will go nicely and there is nothing worse than wearing heels when they make you feel uncomfortable.

Karbea · 15/01/2013 20:59

A bag like this would look fab if you could find one

Nudes rather than coloured tights, deffo. I'm a great fan of seamed stockings, they look fab. I'd be tempted to go with the black patent flats, seamed stockings / tights .

Nything here bag-wise?

This designer, d'you mean?

Lovely dress - I would wear heels for the kind of evening you are going to have.

notMarlene · 15/01/2013 21:02

Was meaning to preview rather than post...

Like the ASOS, Mango and KG leopard job best.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 15/01/2013 21:10

I can,t do the linky thing, but if your not grat with heels, try Chie Mihara's.
They are beautiful shoes, I think they sell them now in Toast, but i,ve just checked ebay and they have loads, considerably cheaper.I can swear to their comfiness!.

finlaysmum12 · 15/01/2013 21:31

GORGEOUS dress!

I have some little leopard print ballet pumps with a black patent block heel about an inch high,Dotty P's but I think Next had some similar?

StillSlightlyCrumpled · 15/01/2013 22:06

I've bought this dress for a party! Have high heeled sparkly shoes to wear with it & nude tights.
Love, love, love the dress, hangs beautifully.

You'll look fab Smile

Ooh, how exciting, so many replies!!
Not Marlene, I LOVE those shoes and even I can manage those heels relatively safely!!

notMarlene, I also LOVE the leopard print bag (4th one down everyone).
My question is can I wear both or is it too much leopard print? I think it will match but the pattern doesn't obviously completely match so I am going to order the next flat ballet shoes just incase and then I can have the bag whatever!
Karbea, I'm going to order the heeled pumps too as they are lovely too.

Now, very boring, but I think I like this nail varnish, what do you think:

I have never, ever, given so much thought to an outfit before!! Can't believe I have never given this style and beauty thread a go before, it's amazing!!!

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply.

ISingSoprano · 16/01/2013 17:44

Love the dress, it's cute but in a grown up way.

notMarlene · 16/01/2013 17:54

Glad you liked 'em!

I'm never a fan of matching bag and shoes but TBH the dune leopard and the KG leopard bag wouldn't work together at all, the dune leopard is quite abstracted and the KG more naturalistic. This is the bag that 'officially' matches the dune shoes but to my mind the KG one is much nicer. the black version of the dune leoprd shoes would work well with the KG bag. I'd strongly advise you not to go with the next flats, they're fine in themselves but way too 'meh' for such a fabulous dress.

Nail varnish wise, well the pink is very sweet! IMHO too sweet for that dress with leopard. this nail varnish would be vamptastic, maybe this if you want more of a neutral shade.

Janus · 16/01/2013 20:20

Oh fart, notMarlene, I just ordered the shoes and handbag!!! I do have a pair of black heels myself though so may team them up with the handbag as I have rather fallen in love with the bag!! I do see your point with the nailvarnish being too sweet, that was my worry. Stupidly, last week I cut off all my nails as one or two broke off so I can't really go for vampy nails when they are all short so I will go for more caramel type nails as it will kinda match the bag!! Who ever knew there was so much to think about??!!
Thanks again for your help. I think I may have spent rather more time thinking about this than hubby's present!!

'Fraid this doesn't help you OP but if anyone likes the dress and is a size 14, check out this ebay listing:

Lovely dress

What a bargain! Wish I was a 14 & had somewhere to wear it to.

Impress nails are great for a one night manicure:-

Your outfit with the leopard print shoes and bag is really lovely !

HyvaPaiva · 17/01/2013 08:23

I have been lusting after that dress for ages! It's beautiful, OP!

Curtsey · 17/01/2013 08:44

Actually OP vampy colours look much much better on short trimmed nails - so I would still go for a dark red or wine with that dress! But anyway, you'll have so much fun, enjoy !
