what to wear at the airport / when flying long haul? but look comfy AND stylish? is this possible

am flying to New York at the end of the month, its about a 7 hour flight, and we are flying really early, 7.30am

i would like to wear tracky bottoms, uggs and a hoody, but i don't want to land in NY looking like an absolute tramp.

any suggestions? i hate the whole silly "airport chic" bollocks thats peddled in Grazia and the like, but at the same time i don't want to look a state or be really uncomfy on the flight, as i hope to get a bit of kip on it :o

What about black trousers with a few % Lycra (smart yet stretchy) a cashmere jumper and a pashmina (snugly but v practical). Wear your heaviest shoes so you don't have to pack them but take snugly thick socks to change into as soon as you have boarded.

I always find reaallly comfy underwear v important. You don't want your elastic or your underwiring digging in when you are going to be trying to sleep sitting up!

Have you looked at HotSquash.com?

They do stylish clothes that don't crease keep you warm/cool (some technology thing in the fabric I'm not sure how it works!) and are comfy - they also fold up small so will pack in your suitcase easily.

I've only got a couple of pieces but I'm a bit of a convert!

Remember NYC in Jan will be COLD, so you will need some warm, chic stuff.

It really doesn't matter. I fly long haul a lot, and I wear leggings and a jersey tunic plus a cardi for layering, but no one would bat an eyelid at uggs and trackies. Unless the papparazzi will be waiting for you in NY, you don't need to worry about arriving looking stylish

In stead of joggers, what about a pair of lounge pants, yoga pants? Have a hoody that is a zip up on, then you wont see it under your coat. Take off all your makeup and moisturise like a mother on the flight, then reapply on the way down.

In your carry on you could have a pair of skinnies, a cool blouse, then change on the plane just before you land?

Agree. Yoga trousers, long sleeved t shirt layered with a cashmere top and big pashmina. Wear heaviest shoes or trainers, carry a large tote and add sunglasses for a celebrity look (remove them for immigration though or you might find it takes ages!)

When flying long haul I change on the plane. I take a pair of plain black loungey pants (I don't even know if that's a real word, what I mean is soft fabric stretchy pants, like pyjamas but that don't look obviously like pyjamas), a long sleeve black top and comfy socks. They fold up small into my hand luggage.

After the fasten seatbelt sign has gone off I hotfoot it to the loo on the plane, change into comfy clothes, take my make up off and contact lenses out, then go back to my seat.

An hour before we land I go to the loo, wet wipe wash, put normal clothes back on and lenses in and then do my makeup back at my seat (people get tetchy if you hog the loo for too long). I have also been known to re-do my makeup in the baggage claim hall loos whilst waiting for my suitcase to come round, because I hate that time waiting and wondering if your luggage has gone astray.

I actually just wear skinnies, they are comfortable enough, and a washable jumper.

I just wing it from airport to hotel in a taxi and wear big sunglasses til I get there. I need a proper shower and mirror to start feeling normal again.

if you are flying to JFK, don't bother to change on the plane. Don't bother about what you look like. You will likely have to stand in line for 2 hours to get through immigration. However cold it will be outside (and it will be FREEZING) it will be HOT in the immigration hall. So, layers. And you will be on your feet, in a queue. For ages. So. Comfy clothes. Comfy footwear. not too much handluggage (but if you have something you can sit on without it collapsing then that might be a bonus). Then if it really matters to you, get changed in the loo once you have retrieved your checked bag(s). But then you may have to queue for ages for a taxi. So honestly, I wouldn't bother.Nobody will bat an eyelid at whatever you are wearing because it's all so seventh circle of hell.

Yep after a long haul flight (usually 24 hours) I just want to do that last bit and leave the airport as quickly as possible. I just hope I don't bump into anyone I know.

Also airport loos are dire and usually very busy. So do it all in luxury of hotel.

we are flying to Newark airport mordion but i would imagine it will still be awful....last year we went to Los Angeles and it was hellish at LAX. took about 3 hours to get through immigration. seems to be like that in america. also was height of summer in LA so i was roasting as had worn loads on the plane as was still cold-ish in UK.

Does that mean you are taking off at 7.30 or landing? Because you'll be landing in the middle of the night.
Perhaps pj's might be useful. We had to wait ages for our transfer from Newark.

FWIW, Newark is not exactly the style capital of the world, so just go for comfort/warmth!!

Layers are your friend, I tend to fly in leggings, socks, vest, tshirt, cardi, and a pashmina, I get hot then cold during flights.
Also I always change into the above when I get on board, take my make up etc
i wear what I want to the airport and change in the loo, then freshen up just before landing and change.

Those who change in the loo -- don't you find the floors disgusting by the end of the flight? Can't imagine changing trousers in there.

If on business I do as someone said above, arrive in smart clothes, change in loo, and change back again pre arrival. (loo floor in biz class is grim too, but I don't drag my clothes through it!). If on pleasure, I wear thick leggings, heavy boots (remove asap and put on thick socks) vest top, long cashmere jumper and a pashmina as I get chilly on flights. With a coat on at arrival I look presentable and comfy!

also we fly from the UK at 7.30am so it will be early afternoon New york time i think. (think someone thought i was landing at night)

It's a day flight and not that long, so I'd just wear comfy normal clothes. I fly to the east coast a few times a year usually and dress pretty normally for the day flights but err on the side of comfort for night flights. I've occasionally changed into lounge pants for a night flights but recently I haven't bothered. It's just more to carry, frankly.

For a day flight I usually wear something like this:
jeans that are not too tight around the waist
footwear that is easy to slip off for security
a few layers on top for the inevitable temperature changes
pashmina as extra layer/scarf/blanket

Don't worry about style go for comfort

I'd just wear normal clothes too, 7hrs is not too long by the time you have a meal and watch a couple movies you'll be there!

Comfy shoes are a must, it's likely that your feet will swell, and if you've taken your shoes off during the flight you may struggle to get them back on, a bit like trying to get your most glam shoes on at 30+ weeks pregnant. Not a stylish scenario!
