what to wear at the airport / when flying long haul? but look comfy AND stylish? is this possible

am flying to New York at the end of the month, its about a 7 hour flight, and we are flying really early, 7.30am

i would like to wear tracky bottoms, uggs and a hoody, but i don't want to land in NY looking like an absolute tramp.

any suggestions? i hate the whole silly "airport chic" bollocks thats peddled in Grazia and the like, but at the same time i don't want to look a state or be really uncomfy on the flight, as i hope to get a bit of kip on it :o

I always get through immigration at Newark much quicker than at JFK. It has a much nicer feel to it. And the journey by train into Manhattan is ace.

I always wear these herringbone trousers to fly because they look like smart, wide-leg 1940s-style trousers but in fact they are joggers with an elasticated waist. They are so incredibly comfy. I team them with a little sweater and also a huge pashmina, for the layering that others have mentioned. I always wear ballet flats because you don't have to take them off at security and they keep my feet comfy during the flight. The outfit then seems chic yet is completely slouchy. If you're thinking about makeup for arrival, I tend to stick to loads of moisturizer and a little foundation, lots of mascara (but not eyeliner or eyeshadow as the flight smudges this for me) and lots of lip gloss. Even on long-haul it hardly needs retouched except the gloss.

I wear soft and stretchy but decent jeggings (which look like skinnies), ankle boots, soft t-shirt, cashmere sweater, big scarf which can double as a wrap on the plane. Also compression socks against DVT

@EIizaDay Nothing wrong with uggs and a hoody for flying (I would never wear tracky bottoms though, skinnies all the way). I fly almost every week and believe me, uggs and a hoody are the very very best clothing to wear while going through airport faff and then when on a plane. I have watched pityingly many a time as a 'stylish' person gets in a right old tizz at airside security, having to take off layer after layer, bits of jewellery, tricky shoes or boots, getting increasingly flustered. Me, I sail through with minimum fuss, plus I'm comfy and warm enough.

A word of warning: sandals or flip flops are NOT suitable footwear for NY in January/February!

Personally, even when it is hot I fly in footwear I can wear socks with. Walking through the security checks in socks is minging enough. Barefoot - eurgh.

I wear very loose, linen trousers, a vest top and a cardi, in my bag I have a shawl/pashmina type thing. when it's time to sleep I take cardi off and wrap myself in the shawl, which is much more comfy than those nasty blankets.

I also have a spare pair of knickers and a flannel/wet wipes in my bag too. The vest top means that you can wash armpits in the morning easily! Shoes which slip on and off easily ( I wear sandals or flip flops, make it easier to get your shoes back on after the flight as your feet swell.

I also have one of those Evian sprays as you get really dehydrated and a lip balm.

Has taken a few uncomfortable 12 hour flights to hone it, but that's the best combo for me so far

Just in time for breakfast. I like Newark to fly into, although Newark as somebody said it is not the style capital of the world.

I went to New York in February and it was bloody cold. Thermals and a big puffy coat. And watch sex and the city to see how they dress in the cold.

Comfy shoes are a must, it's likely that your feet will swell, and if you've taken your shoes off during the flight you may struggle to get them back on, a bit like trying to get your most glam shoes on at 30+ weeks pregnant. Not a stylish scenario!

I'd just wear normal clothes too, 7hrs is not too long by the time you have a meal and watch a couple movies you'll be there!

It's a day flight and not that long, so I'd just wear comfy normal clothes. I fly to the east coast a few times a year usually and dress pretty normally for the day flights but err on the side of comfort for night flights. I've occasionally changed into lounge pants for a night flights but recently I haven't bothered. It's just more to carry, frankly.

For a day flight I usually wear something like this:
jeans that are not too tight around the waist
footwear that is easy to slip off for security
a few layers on top for the inevitable temperature changes
pashmina as extra layer/scarf/blanket

If on business I do as someone said above, arrive in smart clothes, change in loo, and change back again pre arrival. (loo floor in biz class is grim too, but I don't drag my clothes through it!). If on pleasure, I wear thick leggings, heavy boots (remove asap and put on thick socks) vest top, long cashmere jumper and a pashmina as I get chilly on flights. With a coat on at arrival I look presentable and comfy!

Those who change in the loo -- don't you find the floors disgusting by the end of the flight? Can't imagine changing trousers in there.

Layers are your friend, I tend to fly in leggings, socks, vest, tshirt, cardi, and a pashmina, I get hot then cold during flights.
Also I always change into the above when I get on board, take my make up etc
i wear what I want to the airport and change in the loo, then freshen up just before landing and change.

Does that mean you are taking off at 7.30 or landing? Because you'll be landing in the middle of the night.
Perhaps pj's might be useful. We had to wait ages for our transfer from Newark.

we are flying to Newark airport mordion but i would imagine it will still be awful....last year we went to Los Angeles and it was hellish at LAX. took about 3 hours to get through immigration. seems to be like that in america. also was height of summer in LA so i was roasting as had worn loads on the plane as was still cold-ish in UK.

but thanks for the advice, maybe soft skinnies would be OK

Yep after a long haul flight (usually 24 hours) I just want to do that last bit and leave the airport as quickly as possible. I just hope I don't bump into anyone I know.

Also airport loos are dire and usually very busy. So do it all in luxury of hotel.
