My 12 year old son's unrequested hair transplant

Something odd as happened. Aside from a few curls during the almost bald stage (0-15months) my son has always had fine stright hair. Much like mine.

A while ago it started to devolp movement, then more recently a few curls just on the tips, at the front of his head, but last night after I washed it ....it did this picture

Thems proper curls!! All over his head!!

He is frantically flattening his head area trying to squash them. But that makes it go frizzy.

I have no idea what style would work, or what product to use that would discourage the frizz he is creating.

And why is it happening all?

It was enough of a shock that I had a blonde baby, now curls added to the mix to confuse me further. If he was going to have such curly hair how come it has waited so long to show itself ?

I think it is GEOGOUS and am dead jealous, I'd kill for fair curls in exchange for lank mouse, but he has the right hump. Any suggestion in how to style/manage it, bearing in mind he is only 12 ?

Hormones, innit.

There must be loads of funky products out there for this, expect someone along in a min. It's lovely as it is IMO. Smile

Very usual for hair to go curly in adolescence.

Loquace · 13/01/2013 15:40

I think somtoo, but he has gone berserk trying to make it straight again...and is threatening to have shaved it off (over my dead body with our winter temps, he'll FFREEZE!)

I've promised to take him to our hairdresser (who is in for a shock Grin) but have no idea what to have him think over before we go.

Never thought of hormones. Do they change the shape of your folicles with sudden skull growth or similar ?

puberty I reckon. Me and my brother both had curly hair as very little children then the curls went until around 12 when it went curly crazy! Mine is now getting less curly the nearer 40 I get and was much curlier during pregnancy.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 13/01/2013 15:43

My oldest is now 17 but has had curls since he was about 12. Started out fine, straight and honey blonde. Had a few years of brown gorgeous curls. Now it's almost black, and a no.2. Smile

I had dead straight fine hair until I hit puberty, then overnight it became thick, wiry and frizzy! Wavy more than curly, but totally different. I think it's fairly normal - must be hormone related. Recommend not washing it too often (ie not every day) and maybe serum if it's totally frizzy?

loquace I had to do a double take of your DS - he has the exact same hair as my eldest DS. He used to wear it quite long but got fed up with the mad morning hair everyday. Just before Christmas he had it cut shorter and thinned out all over so it now looks like http://diyushop.com/boys-haircuts-2012/best-hairstyles-for-men-2012-7/ this

He uses a rich shampoo & conditioner (L'Oreal Full Restore 5) and combs the conditioner through which seems to help the hair sit more smoothly.

Sorry link messed up

try again

dexter73 · 13/01/2013 17:24

That happened to me. My hair was thick and wavy until I reached puberty and it went curly.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2013 17:42

YY hormones.
My normally straight/slightly wavey hair went like Johnathon Creek when I was pregnant.

DS has a 5&2 haircut. No curl malarky (he's 13yo) Grin

Loquace · 13/01/2013 18:07

So when I go through the menopause, I might finally get the curly hair that is rightfully mine ?

Right, we have a resounding YES on the haircut pic kindly provided by ujjayi so some acceptance is underway.

If I buy serum when does it go on his hair ? When wet or once dried ? Before or after combing ?

I have some bamboo based moouse, I like it because even when I put it on my fine hair when wet I don't feel crispy when it's dried. Will that do till the pharmacy opens on Tuesday ?

He is getting irritated cos I keep trying to stroke them, but I can't help it! All those big fat lovely curls!!

I'm tempted to cut them all off so I can stick them on my head with superglue. Like a cheap alternative to extensions.

my hair went curly about 2 years ago, when I hit 40. I blame hormones. Now it is really curly with proper ringlets. I am quite enjoying it.

C0smos · 13/01/2013 18:47

I think it looks great!

Eliza22 · 13/01/2013 20:37

Oh lord, just gorgeous, gorgeous hair. But then I have poker straight locks and spent a fortune in my youth, wanting curls.

Embrace them! That's my advice...

montage · 18/01/2013 15:31

I never knew that could happen Solde. Roll on 40!
