If you had about £800-900 to spend on a handbag, what would you get?

that's about it really. Basically, I have some money to buy something to remind me of someone who's died. I've a lot of very good jewellery already that I don't actually wear that much (normally the only jewellery I wear is my watch and my wedding and engagement rings), I was going to buy a piece of furniture with it, but we have just bought some new furniture and don't need anything.

so I was thinking a 'good' bag might be something I'll actually use. I have been looking at the Mulberry Bayswater or Alexa, but just wondered if any more stylish ladies had any other suggestions.

Thanks!

This thread is just fab. Bag porn and the self righteous all in one thread. I love mumsnet Grin

DontmindifIdo · 13/01/2013 13:13

I can beat that Jumpherwho - I actually have another broach my Gran left me that's a platinum poodle, tiny diamond for it's eye, and then real (what I think is rabbit, but could be wrong) fur for it's fur. I have worn that before now. It's gorgeous in a "what were they thinking in the 30s?" vile sort of way! So you've got diamonds, real fur and not selling it to pay for a donkey sanctury....

I agree re bag porn and self righteous. You could be appalled at any expensive thing which can be purchased cheaper!

MadBusLady · 13/01/2013 13:16

Christ, you're STILL getting grief from the bench brigade. I'd no more spend £800 on a bag than fly to the moon, but I cannot begin to understand why some people are so bothered by what other people do.

Enjoy your fun, sentimental, totally guilt-free shopping trip.

noddyholder · 13/01/2013 13:17

I wouldn't spend 800 on a bench though Grin

MadBusLady · 13/01/2013 13:22

Not unless it was a magic teleportation bench made of adamantine with flashing lights and the name of the departed engraved with a unicorn horn, no. God save us.

Mayisout · 13/01/2013 13:36

I like Coach
www.coach.com/online/handbags/-handbags_features_newarrivals_1-us-us-5000000000000015027-en?t1Id=62&t2Id=5000000000000015027&tier=2&LOC=LN1&LOC=LN#119826
because they do such a range of colours and some basic shapes which won't date.
But they are less than 800 quid.

Mayisout · 13/01/2013 13:38

Their legacy leather duffle is in 14 colours.

bunnymother · 13/01/2013 14:30

I actually think that a beautiful, classic handbag is the best use of the money in your circumstances. But what I think re the use of your money is irrelevant. Ditto everyone else's views.

CHOOGIRL · 13/01/2013 14:32

Enjoy do you have the details of the co that did your bag? I have a tan Phoebe that is looking v tired and grotty. Unfortunately I don't think Mulberry offer the reburb service any longer.

bunnymother · 13/01/2013 14:36

Assume that all grotty handbags have had the once over with baby wipes? They are magical and have cleaned up all manner of things at our place, not just the children...

madammecholet · 13/01/2013 14:43

Depressed to see DontmindifIdo that you are still having to defend yourself.

The next person to make a stupid 'gosh, really, I wouldn't do that comment' should be pointed at and laughed at.

EnjoyResponsibly · 13/01/2013 15:06

CHOO DH has buggered off to football this afternoon. When he gets back I'll get the name. They're currently doing a pair of my boots that had an inexplicable run in with a bottle of sun tan lotion.

Luxury goods are in peril chez ER Grin

Madbuslady I'm totally Envy at the bench you describe, maybe Harrods? Grin

cardamomginger · 13/01/2013 15:17

Vintage Bottega Veneta. Swoon-worthy.

MrsCampbellBlack · 13/01/2013 15:25

Oh yes Bottega Veneta - forgot I've got one of those on my nap wish list. I do love my wish lists Wink

BrandyAlexander · 13/01/2013 15:28

EnjoyResponsibly, I am also eagerly awaiting details of this company GrinI am rubbish at looking after my bags properlyBlush

MrsCampbellBlack · 13/01/2013 15:30

And so much more ethical to buy a handcrafted BV bag than some sweatshop tat from primark

Glossynotflossy · 13/01/2013 15:35

opi like chic and seek. Not bought fron them but i luke looking and becauaethey are pre loved the prices are imo very decent.

Bella88 · 13/01/2013 15:39

You can't beat a bit of bag porn can you...Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta make me the moistest, is that a word?

I'm on standby for laugh and point duty for any grim, joyless fuckers and their oh so worthy contributions Grin

cardamomginger · 13/01/2013 15:40

Exactly Mrs C-B! BV is an ethically minded company, supporting artisans and craftsmen and women on a local level. From what I've read their employees enjoy excellent working conditions and are extremely well looked after.

Arisbottle · 13/01/2013 15:47

I have bags that I spent obscene amounts of money on 20 years ago which I still use. I would be disappointed if I paid that much for something and it lasted five years.

AmberNectarine · 13/01/2013 15:50

They had two BVs in my local Oxfam for c. £100 each. Why I didn't buy them I will still never understand (suspect I was in perjury for July when I bought three new bags in 3 weeks).

BrandyAlexander · 13/01/2013 16:00

All this mention of Balenciaga. Sigh .... I have wanted one for the last 2 years (the City in leather) except I can't decide whether to get it in the green or the cobalt blue so I have never got round to actually getting it. Do make sure you actually get the bag OP!

QueenCadbury · 13/01/2013 16:01

amber I am so Envy of your charity shop finds. The ones I go in are full of tat and I do go in a few regularly in the hope of finding that elusive item.

dontmind I agree, ignore the naysayers. Don't feel you have to justify yourself.

Keep the handbag porn coming. I fell in love with a grey longchamp bag today in John Lewis (they don't sell it online so can't link) that's definitely on my wish list.
