If you had about £800-900 to spend on a handbag, what would you get?

that's about it really. Basically, I have some money to buy something to remind me of someone who's died. I've a lot of very good jewellery already that I don't actually wear that much (normally the only jewellery I wear is my watch and my wedding and engagement rings), I was going to buy a piece of furniture with it, but we have just bought some new furniture and don't need anything.

so I was thinking a 'good' bag might be something I'll actually use. I have been looking at the Mulberry Bayswater or Alexa, but just wondered if any more stylish ladies had any other suggestions.

Thanks!

I really rate the quality of Anya Hindmarch bags, very well made and great attention to detail.

this Anya is beautiful and you could buy a smaller bag, maybe a cross body with what's left over. One of these perhaps

If you wanted a Chanel on your budget you'd have to look at vintage or second hand but that's no bad thing. I have some beautiful second hand bags that I bought in perfect condition.

Thank you again, so plan of action, pop into Selfridges, Anya Hindmarch shop, Mulberry shop, see if I can adopt a willing student to take to an outlet shop... Avoid cream bags!

(MrsCB - I got that you like the blue one, but I treated myself last winter to a new turquoise winter wool coat with a hood - I want whatever I get to go with that! Plus I don't actually own a black or tan coloured bag...)

Oh the huxleys are lovely.

Tan is more practical than black I think as works all seasons - I rarely use a black bag in the summer.

chartreuse · 13/01/2013 11:07

Very Envy of your plan OP! It is a lovely way to remember someone, I have my granny's engagement ring and another ring from my lovely aunt which I wear everyday and feel that they are with me. I would feel the same way about a bag, and shall be certainly leaving similar instructions for the important women my life.

Tortington · 13/01/2013 11:10

sorry for your loss.

I think spending that amount of money on a handbag is obscene tbh. I suppose it's all relative

AKissIsNotAContract · 13/01/2013 11:10

I know it's not very practical and probably not to most people's taste but I'm rather in love with this louboutin

MaureenShit · 13/01/2013 11:11

If take a long hard look at myself and be ashamed.

CHOOGIRL · 13/01/2013 11:16

A good friend has the Huxley. It is indeed beautiful. I recently sold my cobalt mini-Gracie and purchased the black one which I love and think will have forever.

I still have the LV Speedy I bought when I first started working. This thread is bringing back fond memories of the SA wrapping it up and putting it in the big brown carrier bag.

YY MrsCB the Marcie is lovely. They were 30% in HOF recently and I was v tempted.

FellatioNels0n · 13/01/2013 11:19

I am piggy-backing onto this thread because I won't spend that much money on a bag, but I am going to Bangkok at Easter and I am hoping to pick up a couple of nice fakes - what should I expect to pay for reasonably decent ones, if the real deal was 700-1000 quid? I have no idea what is 'big' in bags atm, and I need some tips of what to look out for!

I suppose I should go and look at some of the real ones first, so I know how to spot a good fake when I see one.

Emo76 · 13/01/2013 11:24

custardo I think that would be an obscene amount of money to spend on a bench.

adi82 · 13/01/2013 11:30

I'd have something like this . It looks good and fits to almost any style you wear.

AmberNectarine · 13/01/2013 11:33

Oh please fuck off with the 'obscene' comments, before I have to start handing out grips.

FellatioNels0n · 13/01/2013 11:35

Oooh I am loving some of these links. I've fallen in love with this but as it's a clutch I'd only go and lose it when drunk.. Sad

MoodyDidIt · 13/01/2013 11:36

lolz @ amber :o

AmberNectarine · 13/01/2013 11:37

OP get yourself a nice Tesco carrier, 300 Oxfam goats and a cat 'o' nine tails to give yourself forty lashes with. How dare you want to use money given to you for the express purpose it was intended, while your children are fed and clothed and you are financially solvent? You should be ashamed.

Viviennemary · 13/01/2013 11:42

Couldn't agree more Ambernectarine. There is far too much self-indulgence these days.

EnjoyResponsibly · 13/01/2013 12:03

DH dropped cooking oil over my tan Mulberry. It was a dark, dark day Angry.

But he researched online and found a company that cleans leather. Off it went shrouded in bubble wrap and came back like new.

So I say don't be put off by light colours and damn you Mrs C-B for I now covet the AH Georgiana in Bluebell. And a purse.

EnjoyResponsibly · 13/01/2013 12:07

But not a bench.

Who the feckity feck wants to be remembered by a bench.

I plan to have a fund so my beloved can drink champagne on my birthday for years after my death. Which will be in very, very old age. I shall drink gin from tea cups, play whist, own a small very vicious dachshund and smell a teeny bit of wee.

Amber - I consider myself told! Wink

FellatioNelson - tha'ts gorgeous I agree, however I don't go out enough to justify spending that much on a bag for going out with. Cost per use would be very depressing....

I understand some people don't think it would be a good use of money, on the other hand I don't see the point on "wasting" it on something I neither need or will use because it seems more 'fitting'. If I'd been given that sort of money another way (say, winning it) I might just go out and have a great time having a shopping spree on lots of little things/new clothes, but the point was to get one thing, not just it go into the pot. It's not actually a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, it isn't enough to pay for a 'once in a lifetime' holiday for us or buy anything big or do anything dramatic. It's not even enough to pay for a month's mortgage repayment (so it's not like when we received a bigish inheritance from DH's side we were able to take a year off the mortgage, it felt like we got something for that money).

I am not going to feel bad about not giving it to charity, nor am I going to feel bad about spending it on myself rather than on DS. I refuse to accept that spending the sum on something just for me is wrong, even if some people think spending on a bag is wrong. (And for whomever it was up thread who suggested an ipad, I have a laptop and an iphone and a computer on my desk when I'm at work, DH has a tablet, I really, really would consider that a terrible waste of money!)

pr something classic like this ferragamo sofia bag.

noddyholder · 13/01/2013 12:25

My sister bought a top end bag with her first big wage rise and she is still using it about 20 years on and it still looks fab so if it is something you will love and use I would say go for it. A bench is a bit gloomy although useful I suppose. What about art?

chartreuse · 13/01/2013 12:43

The other thing I would consider is diamonds. If you buy from an auction you can get amazing jewellry for a fraction of the price you would pay at a jewellers. Most auction houses have online catalogues and you can register your bid online or over the phone. My friend spends her annual bonuses on diamonds, always from smaller, provincial auction houses. She has really beautiful pieces, which she wears rather than keeps in the bank!

DontmindifIdo · 13/01/2013 12:49

charteuse - I had thought that, but then I have 4 diamond rings and diamond broch I inherited from my Gran that I hardly wear, DH has bought me diamond earrings and necklace (again, worn once in a blue moon), he's also bought me rubies and I just never actually wear them... I really am a watch and wedding ring only sort of girl these days...
